What size OD, threading ID, length and material?
If its aluminum, delrin or UHMW - yes. If stainless steel or some other form of steel or hard metal, then no.
Also, how long do you want to wait for it?! [LOL]
Well if it's faster than the US govt then in not too worried

Haha, well a simple cap would be easy. I tried making two square plates with 2 holes and 2 slots, and somehow I totally screwed it up lol. I can only get 2 bolts to work, but at least i have the plates and with those, i might be able to still get the dang thing to work with clamps.
Sigh, if I wasn't rushed for time it probably would have come out better... [hahhah-no]

HB,
Is there any buildup on the decapper rod or inside the neck opening?
If they're carbide dies, take some 600-1500 (tel:600-1500) wet sandpaper and get that crap off at both spots. Wrap the (wet) paper around a cleaning brush or fold it into an end split dowel chucked in a drill.
I'm getting galling on the cases due to brass deposits adhering to the inside of my .308 FL carbide die. Lee says no lube is needed, I say BS at this point.
Yeah, there was a decent amount of "gunk" (for lack of a better term) on the decapper rod.

Sigh, first time back on a mill in a long time and I get to the end of machining my sight pusher and what do I do? I drill a 1/4" hole for a 1/4-20 bolt [facepalm].
Stupid me, you're better than that! A 1/4-20 bolt requires a #7 drill bit! [Bang]
Oh well, guess I'll just spend another 3 hours tonight redoing it all...

heli - coil it.
It wasn't worth it, looked like shit and I couldn't get two of the diagonal bolts to work.
It was basically two pieces of 1/2" aluminum with 4 holes drilled in the corners, two of the holes were slotted other two were tapped. Slotted holes went on top and bottom of each other, so it could be an expanding open.
The slide ... aw screw it...
BuffCyclist
11-24-2013, 19:53
This is the first one, truly universal. There are lots of bolts so I could tighten against slides that are slanted (like XD's and other triangular slides lol). The bolts would push into a 0.25" thick rubber sheet, clamping and non-marring. The vertical piece is adjustable up and down 0.5", and is a 10-32 bolt (nylon, brass, whatever).
36925
The second is the one I attempted to machine and was horribly out of spec. I could only get two bolts diagonal from each other to clamp. Tried clamping it together with a piece of barstock as the slide and holy heck, too difficult.
36927
This is the third on that I machined. I will use a 3" C-Clamp to clamp horizontally and vertically towards the front of the slide, again using that 0.25" thick rubber sheet. The back is a piece that I already machined and will be held top and bottom with 1" C-Clamps. Then again, it has that 10-32 bolt to push out the dovetail.
I think I need to machine another horizontal access port on the front of the tubing so I can clamp the slide to the other side for the install (and move the vertical pushing bolt to the other side of the slide.
36929
eta: And yes, jim, I took your advice way back when with my reloading bench about mounting the press to a 2"x12" board and clamping that to the bench. You said a true hobbyist/tinkerer will use c-clamps for everything, and I remember that often when designing things. I believe this will be more than sufficient and if it doesn't work, I can redesign the push screw mounting plate and still use the frame.

Wouldn't you know it. After mouthing off here, I ran a case into my .223 die for the first time without checking the torque on the damn decapper rod nut. [Bang] Yup, pulled that fukr right out.
Got it sorted out, but destroyed the case. Working good now. Prepped 100 cases and only just stopped after seating about 25 primers. Even though I swagged them good, some of the LC cases with the red lacquer seal need a bit more push to seat all the way. Starting to get a system and timing and routine down now so shit doesn't take so damn long.

After figuring things out (so far), I found it more efficient to work over 100 pieces at a time after tumbling. My prep gear is still limited to mostly hand tools so chucking up in the same drill takes time to switch over. I just gave up early tonight due to the late start after building fence, etc. When I get tired, I stop so I don't make a major oops.

Alas, you are the 3rd person to send that my way, but the first person I don't know in person, so you get props for that!
You've heard of the VLA (Very Large Array), right? It's that huge array of telescopes in Socorro NM that Jody Foster was seen "observing" by listening with headphones to the radio dishes (which isn't how radio observing works, but I digress). There is also the Very Large Baseline Array, that has dishes across the world, effectively making a radio dish the size of the Earth.
In case you didn't know how radio observing works, they can use interferometry to "stitch" together signal from various radio dishes. If you have two dishes that are 1m in diameter and 100m apart, if you use interferometry you effectively have a 100m dish. There are talks of putting a dish on the Moon, which would make for a ridiculously large dish lol.
Anywho,

I've got big plans for my 22LR rifle and black friday. Will be zeroing it at 100yds and attempting for 200yd shots on varying target sizes. That is, assuming I can successfully zero the scope at 100yds with my desired amount of up adjustment left.

Add a small piece of aluminum from a soda can under the rear side of your scope base. It should give you an additional 10~ish MOA of elevation.

Add a small piece of aluminum from a soda can under the rear side of your scope base. It should give you an additional 10~ish MOA of elevation.
Thanks for the tip, thats the plan. I'm going to shim the rear scope base to give me +25moa (using math to get it exactly lol). Then I'll setup my Burris Signature Zee Rings at 0 Front, 0 Rear and set scope at 5moa from bottom (40moa total internal adjustment). That should give me the room to dial down the scope for shots closer than 100yds (50yds is 4" over, so I could just hold under 4" but with no reticle tick marks, that would be hard), as well as dial it up nearly 35moa for the 250-300yd shots that I want to attempt. [LOL]
If it goes according to plan (which now that I said that, Murphy just decided he'll show up to the range on friday too), I should be able to use the scope ring inserts to change my total elevation from 5moa to 45moa (since they have total of 20moa adjustment, I can get rid of the shim cant or nearly double it as needed).
If, and I really mean if, I can get it setup this way, then I'll move to 100yds where POI=POA, and if that's true, then I'll go to 200yds and use my turrets and ballistics tables.
eta: I won't be using an alum can, I have some brass shim stock of various thicknesses I'll be using.
BuffCyclist
11-26-2013, 23:27
And my rifle is already capable of shooting sub-moa at 100yds, I shot a nice 3/4" grouping at 100yds on a friends target.
He couldn't get his the scope on his 30-06 zeroed, and so I showed him how it was done and put 3 shots in a 1" target dot, telling him that he's trying to get his impacts in the same place where I put my shots [LOL]

HA! Math is VERY easy for me, and that calculation is almost one I could do in my head (calculator yields a more accurate shim though). I at least want to know EXACTLY how much it was shimmed. Heck, for all I know, the scope bases are already not level, and that could cause a lot of problems.
BuffCyclist

And for the record, I only have about 65 rounds of subsonic ammo. So I might do the initial zeroing with supersonic to 50yds, holding under the extra amount over subs, so then when I get out to 100+yds, I have 65 subs to get a shot or two on paper.

Did you account for landing delays due to inclement weather and or cancelled flights?

Did you account for landing delays due to inclement weather and or cancelled flights?
Nope, the question was how far did it travel wheels up to wheels down, time doesn't matter. If I was supposed to take into account holding patterns before landing, the question would have given some sort of info on that.
Eta: My answer of distance is not ground based distance, it is actual distance flown. So if it flew 1mi directly upwards, that would be 1mi, etc.

HA! Math is VERY easy for me, and that calculation is almost one I could do in my head (calculator yields a more accurate shim though). I at least want to know EXACTLY how much it was shimmed. Heck, for all I know, the scope bases are already not level, and that could cause a lot of problems.
Break out the calipers and measure the shim you put in there. Do the math from there. Changing 0.007" here makes how much of a difference 100yds away from here.
Cmon smartie! Figure it out!

Well the shim that I put in (about 0.015") will give me close to 15moa cant. That's pretty good, and after counting my scope clicks, I've got closer to 50moa internal adjustment, so I set it at 10moa from bottom giving me 40mo of up. Should be pretty good if it zeroes close to that.

About 20/40 right now. The hard part is that I don't get any corrective lenses for them. I used to put on my (mega-thick) glasses and that would be that. Now I just gotta suck through the fuzziness....
no more pain, though. I get stitches out soon! They are gonna have to put me out for that.

Yes, you did, and you were very right. However, that measurement is dependent on the distance between the two scope bases. So if you have a rail base that is 7" long, you will get less of a difference.

I just like watching (imagining in this case) you math geeknerds work these out.[pick-me]I posed the same question to a co-worker some years ago and asked him to show his work. He did it as far as I can tell, but I forgot what he came up with. Knowing what the circumference is 30,000 feet up, let alone accounting for the climb and descent is where I quickly get lost. I should run this by my youngest son, he was a CS/math major before he changed to EE.
The circumference of the earth at the 34th parallel is listed here (http://home.online.no/~sigurdhu/Grid_1deg.htm) as 17958.166 miles. Given that a rise in elevation makes it farther still, but likely less than 1% more, your answer falls short.

Oh crap! I forgot to offset the radius of the earth at 30k ft, I calculated it at the 34th parallel (very crudely of course) on the ground. If I really wanted to give you a correct answer, I'd get it spot on, but I'm too lazy for that. Maybe I'll save this question and do it on my next work shift.

The previous owner thinks it was lock tighted but even with a strap wrench (rubber) I can't move the effer. Tried wd40 but nothing else so far. I'm thinking about drilling a hole through the muzzle adapter and trying a rod and cheater bar but I wanted some input first.

Heya Brutal....... yes, its good....you heard the Amusement Ride joke?
How'd shooting go for ya today?
Not sure, I haven't seen any of his new stuff.
We didn't shoot today. Too many beers were already consumed before I arrived.
We hunt tomorrow afternoon.
I gotta get off the intarwebz. I think I heard my CC whimper.
Nite OBC.

Great weather expected for today, I'd really like to go shooting, have some new fun stuff to shoot at..........but....... there really is enough stuff to do around here, that I should do some work instead of having fun.

Got a hundred 223 done, plus some that I'm leaning towards not firing....hate wasting stuff like that.

That's a good idea Jim.
I asked my neighbor this morning, if he wouldn't mind taking a look at my questionable loads. He'll be over in a while, I might be pulling several of them.

Good day at the range for me, sorta at least.

22LR 100 yard zero and got a grouping of 0.5". My best grouping yet!
Took it out to 200 yards and got a larger grouping, but I couldn't repeat it...

Got some more reloading supplies today..powder, jectiles, and a 1000 case of tula 762 39 fmj for a decent price. Yeah there are some cheaper prices on the net, but when ya add shipping to it, pretty close.
Neighbor told me not to shoot any of the questionable rounds, so I'll recover the bullets and powder and re-doie it. He also suggested I try some 75 gr for 223, so I got some of that today too since they actually had some.
