Man what a pisser, ran out of shielding gas right in the middle of a welding job.

That is the original bottle I put on the machine when I bought it, several years ago. Took me couple minutes to figure out what the deal was. Been a long time since ran out of gas.

Greedy hummingbirds?

Yes. Mrs. Hummer cleaned and filled about 30 feeders yesterday between the ones in Palisade for Black-chinned Hummingbirds, and here off the Peak-to-Peak for Broad-tailed Hummingbirds. In another month the northern migrant Rufous and Calliope will begin coming through in their southbound migration. That's when things get really busy.

I don't see them much, but I sure hear them a lot. Neighbor has a hummer nest over there as well. Wifey and I have been discussing putting up a feeder.

My folks in WA have a feeder over a fountain and they get tons of visitors either getting nectar, water, or a quick bath.

Is that what this is? Pupper found it in the grass last fall under the cottonwood trees. About 3 inches long.

I have also noticed the natives getting restless at odd hours on what would normally be a work day. I hope these idiots get back to work soon so they?ll go to bed because they have to work the next day.

My neighbors run some sort of unlicensed daycare of some sort and usually it?s summer months where they really have an abundance of screaming kids in their back yard all day. With all of the little munchkins not having school for months they?ve had tons of kids all of the time lately.

At least it should cool down by November so all the noisy people stay indoors.

Yes, I am working to manage the forest for fire mitigation and develop habitat enhancements to maximize plant and wildlife diversity. It's an effort to integrate our home as a part of the natural environment rather than apart from it. (Something most city dwellers don't think about).

For several decades it seemed that the USFS failed to manage the forests but I suspect it was substantially prevented by endless lawsuits by anti management groups. Now, after so many mountain communities have been damaged by fire, the county and forest service have joined to manage the forest to protect homes from fire. I think they're doing a good job here.

Gman
06-13-2020, 02:05
Yep. Management was pretty well shutdown. No logging. Let it become beetle kill and catch on fire seemed to be the strategy preferred by the enviros.

You can harvest and replant, or it will burn. Either will ultimately bring diversity to the ecosystem.

that's good. The daughters place in Central CA. She redid some forestation around the property, removing, trimming / cutting back. Think it was a good idea, with all the fires CA has? of course not. Some sjw F&G noticed the work , entered property w/out permission. Took pictures which started a major confrontation between her and the epa, of all places.

Seems she didn't get .............. a permit, submit a wetlands impact study etc.
Looking at $25k in fines, she told them to take her to court, and iirc go fuk them self.
Since the sjw entered property uninvited, "they" decided to settle for a $2500 fine and DON'T DO IT AGAIN warning.

The up side is the sjw was suspended for over aggressive tactics.
She still does fire mitigation on their place, and surrounding properties.
Now in CA no one hardly says anything, after that fire that wiped out a town in NorCal.

It's definitely beautiful country up there, land and housing is still fairly cheap. If it's open, check out the Cosmos house , outside Rapid. 24040 Cosmos Rd, Rapid City, SD 57702 You'd enjoy it.

auto & mc accidents. I was told about them years ago on my first mc trip up there. Was tooling down the road and saw an opening where i could pass this tourista van , hitting it's brakes every 30 sec
Was getting ready to pass then saw one of those signs. Hmm ........ The road looked straight, but had one of those hidden side roads, with no signage.

Those SD scenic roads are optical illusions.

I'm surprised there wasn't a pile of signs at that pull off where I took that picture. It's right on the other side of a hill, so when you pull out, you have to hope someone isn't cresting that hill at a full clip. I actually rolled down my window to listen and see if anyone was coming before I pulled out.

Food out here is good as well. Usually when I travel for work I ask people what their favorite place to eat is. I'm usually out in a pretty rural area and the food sucks. I once had a guy tell me that if he could eat anywhere, it would Sirloin Stockade. I went there all excited and it is like Golden Corral but 10 steps down.

You seem to have good taste in almost everything you buy and post pics of. How you like that stuff is unknown to me.

You want a good italian dressing, start with some shaved parmesan cheese. Mix the wet ingredients, then let the cheese sit in it for a few days, before finishing it. Add a few drops of lemon juice and some sugar, till you get the taste you're after.

Over 12 years of crap I had to take from Eastlake 80614 post office staff, today was the day that straw broke camels back.
I got so unhappy that I called people higher up. I told em what the hell happened just this week and minor details of what major crap happed there in past 12 years.

After 20 minutes later, postmaster (head of 80614) called. I was kinda shocked the postmaster would call that early.

Talked to the branch boss and lash the crap that I had to deal with for past 12 years. I also told em that I go there often.

This is very fking reason I drive all the way to northglenn (80233) or Broomfield (80020) to drop off of packages.
I even told her that they ever read google or Yelp reviews.
It is repetitive same complaints.

Due to stay home crap, I try to reduce unnecessary driving, but I will be avoiding this eastlake post office, unless it is absolutely necessary.

So, I was very busy and went to Eastlake post office again.
NO line, and I was very happy to be the first one to be there. As soon as my kid and I went to the register upon calling us, I hear "You can't cross that line!" As I know they are known to be rude/mean on many reviews, I thought they were talking to me. I found out one lady who just entered wanted to just drop off the package off at a drop box and went around the line to do so.

The PO worker again said, "you can't cross that line due to pendamic and social distancing order."
The lady who cross the line said "you can't make me, this is America and I can do whatever I want"
THen I hear a person behind me saying "....and you are about to go to American Jail for disturbance (?)." <--- LOL
LOL. So 30 second wasted. no biggie.

Then the lady wanted to measure the box, because it looked bigger than the standard DIM Weight. I told her that it is not, and if it is over, I go to FedEx. I told her to feel free to measure it. SHe measures it TWICE, and said "you are right." She might be NEW, so NO BIGGIE.
As soon as she is about to print, I had ANOTHER customer crossing everyone's way to drop off the package on those package drop off slot. Another fuss from post office worker, and another BS I had to hear from both.

FIY, most of post office will not say anything if you kinda go to some area to leave many packages on many empty counter or cross a line a little to drop it on a drop box.
2 unhappy customer and 1 customer who gave up on eastlake within 3 minutes. [LOL]

I am still happy that I did drop off all my packages within 3 minutes.

Last fall, I banded the 4th CO record Broad-billed here in Palisade. Also, the 1st CO record Broad-billed in 2002. Very rare here, rare in northern AZ, common in Tucson.

82126That little guy (or girl) is beautiful, I'm going to have to pay closer attention to them now. Now I know what your screen name is about, unless you also own a Hummer lol.

Nice to see tucson is getting rain. I washed to vehicles this week and all we got was maybe 15 min of rain.

Be curious to see if you notice a lot of hbird activity. It seems this year Every hb has a few offspring, lots of activity around the feeders, more so than the last 2 years. . We've had them get real close to us, while sitting on the back patio.

Feed them and they will come, GK. Clean and fresh is key. I catch and band hummers in Sedona every summer but not this year due to Covid. Have wanted to visit but am always squeezed for time.

Watched a younger tarantula do some creepy shit around the house tonight. I get being able to scale siding if you're a bigger spider, but it kinda surprised me he could cling to a smooth electrical panel/pvc conduit.

He came into the garage twice and I got him back out without hurting him...little bastard.

It was raining like crazy yesterday. So I did not turn on the lawn. Soil is extremely dry.

Many states with same temperature as we do usually turn on their sprinklers 1-2/week.

Cost of living in place with low humidity.

Buffalobo, my suggestion is to start with a good field guide. The only one I recommend for a primary guide is the Sibley Guide to Birds, 2nd edition. Other guides can be useful for further study but this is the best. https://www.amazon.com/Sibley-Guide-Birds-2nd/dp/030795790X

(https://www.amazon.com/Sibley-Guide-Birds-2nd/dp/030795790X)If you want more detail about hummingbirds I recommend A Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America: https://www.amazon.com/Field-Hummingbirds-America-Peterson-Guides/dp/0618024964 (https://www.amazon.com/Field-Hummingbirds-America-Peterson-Guides/dp/0618024964)

Sibley will give you enough to ID most birds. I don't use any particular ID websites but there are countless ones out there. A good friend has http://www.hummingbirds.net, and it's pretty good.

In Colorado, hummer ID is pretty simple as there are only two breeding species normally found in the state, the Broad-tailed Hummingbird of the mountains, and the Black-chinned Hummingbird of the plains, suburbs and dry mesas. Broad-tailed can be seen anywhere in migration. A very small breeding population of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds is likely present around Lamar.

The only other regular hummingbird species are the migrant Rufous Hummingbird and the Calliope Hummingbird. With rare exception both are seen only in the fall or southbound migration beginning around July 4 through mid September.

So, search on the four regular species and you will have ~99.9% of the hummers in CO. As you delve into the ID you'll find that each species, sex and age have different characteristics of plumage, flight pattern, wing sounds and vocalizations. That's where the fun and challenge is. I usually can ID CO hummers to species and sex and sometimes age with my eyes closed as they fly by from their wing sounds and vocalizations alone.

Oh, if you know of any other species in CO, I want to know about it. Part of my work is documenting rare, out of range and out of season species.

Good luck!

I really like the free Merlin Bird ID app. It helps narrow the list in a hurry.

I struggle the most with Calliopes but don't think we get them often. It's easy with the rufous since they're such a-holes.

Got the carb and fuel tank on the Gravely cleaned up. After doing a few rudimentary searches I've been able to determine that a lot of these tractors have been converted to electric start. Mine has a starter bolted on with a different belt pulley that has a sproket to hold a chain for the starter to turn. It has a foot switch to start, and a button on the handle that I think might be a kill switch to turn it off. It also has a little generator to charge the battery.

I watched a video and saw a guy with one without all that added stuff, and he starts it by wrapping a cord around the pulley and pull starting it that way. I have an extra pulley, but didn't know what it was for, and it's the factory pulley for starting with a rope.

Anyway, with a charged up car battery, the starter does nothing, even when I jump it with a screw driver. I even fashioned my own pull start and used some starter fluid to see if it would try to kick over. Everything is a flop at the moment, but I've gained more info and have more things to trouble shoot. Namely the starter, starter switch, relay if I can find one, and the plug wire seems faulty.

What I'm getting at is I was thinking about starting a thread about it on here. It's not guns, but I've been having a pretty contentious relationship with this site for a while, and all the best threads seem to be some sort of build/info thread that has nothing to do with politics. Everyone checks them out, everyone is polite, and people get to flex their knowledge muscles.

We used to rope or crank start everything before all this fancy recoil starter and electric starter stuff...

The first snowmobile we got was a rope start. Single cylinder Kohler engine in a Sno Bunny.

I broke my wrist when a snowmobile engine backfired while pull starting it at a 90* angle. I broke my arm crank starting an old Allis-Chalmers tractor improperly. Always start with the crank up...

Watched another tarantula tonight..scaling the front door. MF'r ate shit from damn near 7 ft. and hit the ground hard, I thought he was dead. He moved after a few minutes, but sat still for another 15. Then he was back to moving around, but leaking a clear fluid from a few leg joints. I've always heard they can die from a fall as short as 6". I watched my wife freak out and slam dunk our daughter's spider into the cage when it jumped up her arm and the spider is fine though.

If you found that spider dead later, I wouldn't be surprised. If it lived some more, I wouldn't be surprised.

The kid at the pet store told us that male tarantulas live about 5 years, and females about 20. Good thing my brother bought my daughter a female...

they're fairly docile as pets. the ones we had would crawl up your arm, to sit on your shoulder. Well they were nice pets, til the cat decided to take them out of the cage and play hockey with them. Once dead their exoskeletons will stay the same, if you spray some clear lacquer on them.

Well,
I grew up to the SW of you, 10 miles north of Mexico and on the east side of the stream called the Colorado river. Yes , down there in Yuma. There was two seasons, Hot and Damn Hot. I remember the bank sign showing 95* at midnight.

Yeah, it felt like Vegas heat here the other day, and it was only 101. I remember walking around between casinos at 2:00 am and it said 99, oppressive. A buddy had a funeral/ I mean wedding in August in Vegas....wtf.

You gotta man up , it's NAZ in the summer. Next thing we know, you'l be saying . IT'S TOO COLD. [panic] At least you got some rain down there.

I cool off by getting some trigger time at the range. Then some load development, in the reloading room, with ac ;)

Had to take the dogger to the vet twice in one week, getting a little frustrated with those bills.

She ate a bee the first time, and had an unfortunate reaction which caused both visits we think. She's on the mend though and getting back to normal rambunctiousness.

You gotta man up.

I'm no pussy, but you have set a standard for Man card that some cannot achieve. I do what I can, Sir.
