M27, designed by Heckler & Koch, is less than half the weight of the M249, offering more mobility, less strain and the ability to engage the enemy faster. Also, the new build resembles the M4, making it hard for enemy snipers to distinguish machine gunners as targets while still providing infantry Soldiers on the battlefield with vital overwatch.
AUTOMATIC FIREPOWER
• Firepower: Semiautomatic and full automatic options
• Cyclic rate of fire: 700–900 rounds per minute
• Maximum range: 3,545 meters
• Effective range: 600 meters with iron sights; 1,000 meters with optics
• Muzzle velocity: 2,900 feet per second
• Ammunition: 5.56 mm NATO round; 30-round magazine
• Lifespan: Cold hammer forged barrel lasts for 15,000 rounds

"Lifespan: Cold hammer forged barrel lasts for 15,000 rounds" ????????? Better carry a shit load of barrels if this weapon is used in full auto mode for any duration..
That's probably minimum. SAW gunners will destroy barrels due to having the gas set too high. Even in a gunnery situation, it would be unlikely to go through more than combat load. Armorer should be keeping track and replacing as needed.
Lets hope so, although the article seems to point out the full auto function as a selling point to replace the M4, at $3k a pop, I'm not sure what to think about this being standard issue.
"Automatic riflemen are the offense and defense of combat arms Soldiers on the battlefield. They provide overwatch and suppressive fire for fire teams and are often the most casualty-producing members of a team. Since 1984, these riflemen have relied on the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) in combat theaters, including in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, the SAW’s cumbersome weight (20-plus pounds) triggered the need for a new high-powered option. One possibility: the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR), already in use by the Marine Corps. The M27, designed by Heckler & Koch, is less than half the weight of the M249, offering more mobility, less strain and the ability to engage the enemy faster. Also, the new build resembles the M4, making it hard for enemy snipers to distinguish machine gunners as targets while still providing infantry Soldiers on the battlefield with vital overwatch."
They're not replacing the m4, they're allowing automatic riflemen the ability to blend in more (same argument was made for the snipers to transition to the m110 and the SDM/SPR rifle AMU was pumping out to line units).
The SAW is a pain and the training for it isn't carried over from basic riflemen training. With an "m4"-like weapon, the automatic riflemen can transition into their role easily.
The USMC has already done studies on this concept and the m4-like variant won in actual Marine testing: https://www.mca-marines.org/gazette/m249-light-machinegun-automatic-rifle-role

Operation: Gas-operated (full-auto)
Length: 1,230 mm (48.5 in) (1,130 mm (44.5 in) with short barrel)
Weight: 10.1 kg (22.3 lb)
Caliber: 7.62 mm (7.62×51mm NATO)
Maximum effective range: 1,100 meters with tripod and T&E (the latest FM reads 1,800M)
Maximum range: 3,725 meters
Tracer burnout: 900 meters
Cyclic rate of fire (hydraulic buffer): 550–650 rounds per minute
Personally have counted over 30k through a barrel that's not toast yet.

It's more of an issue of the gunners on the trigger more than they are supposed to, which wears out the gas port opening it up, causing higher shooting rates. Usually barrels are worn out at breach rather than full barrel being worn down.
The article I linked indicated there are two gas settings on the SAW. Is that no longer the case? I thankfully never had to learn the hunk of crap since they weren't part of our MTOE.

so, I'm not sure about the last time I updated anyone.....
Lilly, was an older black lab mix when we got her. She passed from a very aggressive cancer while I was in Colorado in 2012.
Didi, now almost 9 years old, is getting a little gray on the snout. she still moves well, but I can tell she's just getting past acting like a little crazy puppy. Still extremely food motivated a high prey drive (as much as her dachshund stature will allow).
Ritter, the new miniature dachshund, will turn 3 this summer. He's still crazy as all get out. He loves to play fetch with the ball, toy, whatever. Extremely shy around new people, but a ball of fun that always makes us laugh.

Sandhill.
When my dad worked during summers for the USFS as a nature/wildlife interpreter (he gave talks to tourists at campgrounds on the history, flora and fauna of the Ocala National Forest), the USFS had a mount of a sandhill crane in the office. They're pretty neat looking.
A fun aside regarding dad: His favorite portion of the program was taking tourists down to the water's edge with a spotlight to shine out and let them see the gators' eyes -- especially at Alexander Springs. The gators largely disappear during the day. He takes one group down and hears people swimming. Says, "Hey, you need to get out of the water right now". The two dudes swimming protest saying they can swim at night if they want. Dad shines the spotlight out and tells them to look behind them. They do, to the tune of about 50 pairs of eyes shining back in all their primordial, red glow, walnut sized brain " I want to eat you" glory. The two guys quickly decided they in fact were done swimming for the night.
ETA: Their view was something like this:
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-igztKY6zxOs/TxtKdeWB1-I/AAAAAAAABqE/Y6ll0GxEA3I/s1600/Eyes_of_Night_3126-lg.jpg
When you say wildlife interpreter, do you mean that he would give the tour in a different language?
He would "interpret" nature to the campers (often Europeans), so that they understood the way in which things worked together. The idea was that they would see the fragility of the ecosystem and not destroy things. He would go into history, various animals, etc. Was pretty neat to watch his presentations.
When I got my windshield replaced the guy asked, "What'd you hit?!"
I wish I had been in Kearney so I could have replied, "One a dem da gum sandhilly cranes!"
Should have told them it was one of the Roo's they released into Wyoming.

Did it work?

Ooh, that would have been good.
I dunno. The Europeans (especially the Germans) seemed to enjoy it. I would get to go along sometimes and he'd use me to demonstrate Native American techniques for the history section (knapping arrowheads, non-matches firestarting techniques, etc.). That was always fun. He got to wear a USFS uniform and drive the 1970's green truck, which was the coolest thing ever to 10 year old me.

Hospital update: The lights in the hall automatically turn off at 9pm so I'm sitting in the dark. The room is nice and cold, but the hallway is hot as hell. The water just broke in the room I'm here for. Some other lady is giving it the old college try down the hall. I've got Pandora and headphones. The worst part is that I've been working this entire time. I knew I had work to catch up on, but it's taking me like 4 solid hours. Booo.
For reference, even on my busiest of days, the work I have to do at home is maybe an hour's worth at most. We got to the hospital at 3pm today.

Your flashlight broke? No Chem Lights in your daily carry bag.......
It must be either a cultural or familial tradition thing.
We were "around" for the birth of both of our grandkids. In one case, at my wife's hospital here in Parker. In the other, we were visiting the kids that live in WA over the holidays and around the due date with the hope we would be in town when he came.
In both cases, we asked them what they wanted. Answer, "Privacy."
Great, let us know if/when you need us or are ready for visitors.
I realize there's two sides to this, often very polar, but I certainly supported their decision and frankly had no reason to go hang out at the hospital in either case. We were minutes away from one, and less than an hour from the other when the time came. One of the other grandmas packed her own bag and was bound and determined to spend the night at the hospital with my son and DIL Only after repeated and stern demands by DIL for her to stay home, did she agree to keep her distance until they were ready to take visitors.
On the other hand, there were friend's of the kids telling them on FB they needed a week or more of alone time, even without the grandparents getting to visit the newborn. Granted, the kiddo isn't going to know what's what from one or two brief encounters, but it's a proud and emotional experience grandparents cherish. I don't believe they realized we were in town, and staying with the kids... We limited our time, and gave them their space. Of course, we also knew we would still be there for a few days after they were discharged. [Coffee] My wife's real goal was to be there to help and support DIL and baby at home for the first few days and that was achieved.
My wife is a L&D nurse so babies in general are pretty run of the mil for her, though she is the proudest grandma I know. For what it's worth, in 1984, my pregnant wife was staying with my parents the last few weeks I was finishing an AIT and clearing post for my permanent duty station. I was on the road traveling back to my hometown, wife, son, and family, and the expected birth of my second. I arrived in town and called the house, only to find out I had missed the big event. On the upside, my mother acted as my proxy in the delivery room and was thrilled with the privilege. I was disappointed that I wasn't there, but that's life.
I recently stopped carrying a flashlight.
The most recently development is that a nurse came in to check on the water that broke. She wasn't sure if it was really the water that broke, so they got another nurse. I think there was a test strip involved where you stick it in the water and it changes a color. They discussed the color a bit, then the second nurse licked the test strip and said, "Yeah, her water broke." then without any pause or break in her stride she went on to talk about how there is a unique smell and other properties they look for. My wife came out and was freaking out about it and made the little girls tell me the story because she didn't think I'd believe her, but they saw it as well.

brutal, I have similar feelings. This isn't the first baby in the family, and I don't understand why we need to be here either. Big sis wants to be there for little sis. They have a pretty small family. I'm just hanging out in the lobby, dad is in there, everyone else is girls (mom, sister, girl kids). Sitting around on the internet is what I'd be doing anyway, so it doesn't matter that it's at a hospital. Well, except we were supposed to be up in the mountains at some cabin this weekend.

I ended up at a Tires Plus and the cheapest tires that they had was going to be $105. **I was getting the cheapest tire because my tires should be covered under a warranty with Les Schwab and I'll take it in tomorrow when I have time.** Anyway, the tire was going to be that much. The guys says, "I'll give it to you for free if you apply for one of our credit cards." DONE and DONE! Free tire for me. I like making deals.

Free spam for the rest of your life, too. win-win?
I've started a second LLC, and I was documenting everything I was doing to make a how-to thread on here at some point. I'm not sure when that is going to happen, but I think the first piece of junk mail that I got after filing for the LLC name and getting a Tax ID number was inside of 10 days. I hadn't even memorized how to spell my LLC before I started receiving spam in my physical mail box.

Likewise. even with that LLC closed, i still receive mail telling me how they can have my business REACH THOUSANDS OF NEW CUSTOMERS. For a small monthly fee, of course.

Public records harvesting?
I suppose with the looming unemployment this year unless things take a big turn around, I should think about another LLC (had one 25 or so years ago in another state) so I can possibly do some subcontracting work.
Public records harvesting?
Oh I'm sure. Right from the Colorado.gov or the IRS. Those are the only two places that even knew the business existed when I started getting spam. Same thing with getting a PO Box. The only mail I ever received was from American Express and other businesses trying to get me new customers or save me money on business supplies.

So who knows about becoming FAA certified for flying drones. My company is making a big deal about it (It's a 63 question test!), but I feel like it's something I may start looking into on my own. They describe it as basically testing to be a pilot, but then only flying drones. I'm mostly curious about the cost. Anyone gone through it? I know we have pilots here, but I imagine what they go through is more involved.

Job market for my current technical skillset (at my pay or even 75%) is pretty tight and very small.
My penance for always busting my ass, working 60, 70, 80 hour weeks or more at times for that past 30 years, and never really getting much training outside my core skill area. Now I'm expendable. Typical "old guy" trap, but nobody to blame but myself I suppose.
I was really hoping to just ride it out the next 3-4 years, doing what I do, and ease into retirement, maybe just doing some PT consulting. That's not looking promising lately and the stress of it is killing me, and affecting my productivity. Company has killed off all my local accounts, so my pipeline on that as a fallback is non existent. I have one, maybe two solid accounts I can possibly subcontract through a body shop because I could never meet the ins bond reqs for most of these outfits, but they're not enough hours over the year to pay the few bills I have. Hell, I was trying to get hired on at one, but they cut staff as we were kicking it around. One other is in a big hiring freeze or I might have had a shot there.
I may reach out to a few contacts at some of the competition to see if they have anything cooking.
I might have to look at early retirement withdrawals before 59-1/2 and just plan on dying before it's all gone so the wife has something left.
Think you could fly a drone?
Better yet, think you could program a flight pattern for a drone that is malleable within a few pre-set perameters?

IT consultant that never got a CS degree and seems to now have a case of adult onset ADD as I'm always getting pulled in 40 directions.
More of a field systems engineer than anything. Started as a radio tech, then computer tech in the Army, and did systems field maintenance and repair for many years.
I work on IBM-i (AS/400) mostly, and IBM storage.
I've done a lot of a little of everything. Mostly IBM gear but Cisco too.
Systems, storage, switch/route, firewalls, virtualization, UCS, blades, fiber switching, etc.
Mostly a 25+ year career in IBM-i (AS/400) infrastructure and support, IBM storage.
Sadly, I've also become a bit picky about when/where to work. I work remotely from home but was traveling 30-40% nationally, and that was OK. I would go bust my ass for a week somewhere, get shit done, and come home and kick a little until the next trip. Been working almost 100% remote since last June. Was QA guy on a huge migration project for IBM at one of our big accounts. Flew only once since just to meet a new client in Phx for lunch.

Sounds like you have some great skills, just maybe not the most recent ones. I am kind of in the same boat, early 50s, IT and behind on the latest skill sets. The only difference is my job will last a few more years. I have looked around and most of the openings are paying 25-30% less than what I make now. Have you thought about working for IBM directly? They are one of the few companies that appreciates and retains older workers.

Very recently, I have kept my eye on their postings. In the past, hadn't given it much thought just because I was always so busy and have also seen them cut old workers off early during big layoffs of 10-15-25K people at a crack. They also chased off a lot of old timers with pension pay and benefits cuts. There's also a bit of nepotism in the ranks for some of the juicy positions.
It's not that I haven't kept up with the core technology changes in my field, in fact I'm fairly advanced in my specialty in most respects over the average "AS/400 guy" when it comes to the virtualization technologies and storage.
Most of the virtualization jobs are rapidly becoming a commodity position that just doesn't pay well. Infrastructure jobs are getting harder to get as more companies move into the public cloud. While our company provides infrastructure and implementation services for a lot of that, it's all becoming less and less vendor centric and more a software defined commodity product and we're seeing a decline in the need for folks like me.
The recent public cloud failures have spurned a bit of course change for some organizations, but hasn't necessarily steered the ship towards a different destination.
That's great that you have kept up in your specialty. I am behind on technologies in my field both from a development and system engineering perspective. Angular baffles me and we are still mostly a rack and stack shop so I don't have much virtulization experience. I used to be a jack of all trades kind of guy, but the last couple years I have focused on the data side and think that might get me through till retirement.
It doesn't help that they're increasing our utilization (billable hours) requirement, disallowing hourly rate discounts unless it's absorbed by product margins (which are stupid slim to begin with), even for large projects, while also slashing and burning our pipeline.
The client base isn't going to pay our full on rates for projects lasting months or years. Not sure what they're thinking.
Pretty much doing all they can IMHO, to force people to make a move. If you're not part of the Fortune 30 "Program Accounts," you're chaff. They're just building a paper trail to show how we're not working hard enough. After 25 years of being measured on revenue, stupid utilization models suck balls anyway and breeds inefficiencies.
Meh, WTF do I know. I'm not one of the fat cat executives or board members making decisions based on a questionable career at one of the top 5 consulting firms. We got rated one of the top IT strategy consulting firms by Forbes and now they've got a big head.
ETA: Am I bitter? Yes. When we were first acquired, I already had a great customer base, was told I would have so much work in my area I would have to turn much away. I kept busy for the past 8 years, but that never really happened, and the work has dwindled since. If it wasn't for the QA project work I did last year, I would have gotten tossed.

FUUUUU!
I THINK someone threw a firework off a bridge and it explodes on the car next to me. Not sure.
Okay, now that I can elaborate. I was driving and there was an explosion and flash just above the car next to me. At first I thought someone tossed a firework out the sunroof, or shot a gun out the sun roof. I didn't really have much of a reaction. Then I started to think about it and tried to get close to the car to get a plate. I didn't see a passenger, or a sunroof in the car. I thought about it for a moment, and it happened while we were traveling under some overpasses, so I bet someone tossed a firework off the bridge. Poor guy was looking at me and jumped off to another highway when I got close. He probably thought it was me (if he noticed it at all).

I'm eating a Hungryman Mexican Fiesta. Pretty good. Probably just as awful as whatever Stu ate, but way cheaper.
Awful, maybe. At least you're closer to a bathroom then he is.
In Omaha, along I-80, Anthony's is good value. One or two days a week they had steak soup as an appetizer, drool. The Drover is on the north side of I-80 in the same area - good, a little more $ as I recall. I've also been to one downtown, I think it was Omaha Prime ($$$) Really old school.
I love old school steakhouses. There is one in Tulsa that is so old school you will think you're back in the 60's.
I'm having trouble even picturing what "old school" is in relation to a steak house. Paint the picture for me.
Lotsa dark wood, tufted leather booths and chairs, leathery waiters.
The ambiance is as dry aged as the meat.
Thank you.
Someone is blaring music in another room. Fortunately, it's a song I'd listen to, or else I'd have to....lay in bed and bitch on the internet, but not actually do anything differently.
It's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" by Nirvana, and sounds like it's from the MTV Unplugged album. When was that, 1993?
Whoa, how'd you know all that Stu? Are you some kind of music idiot savant?
No, I have that CD in my car.
Well have you checked to make sure that some asshole didn't break into your car, steal your CD, then blare it to keep you up all night?
Yes, that has occurred to me, and I briefly looked out the window. No windows that I can see appear to be broken.

In the Pines, In the Pines.
Hopefully for you, they'll play the whole cd.

I put sour cream on the enchiladas. The coconut pudding was a nice finishing touch. Better than an MRE at least.
I've been eating MREs for the last three weeks. If I farted right now, satan hisself would re-think his career path.

While I 100% agree with you, be careful who you say that to because that will immediately be turned into "He's saying we're MURDERERS!" and the butt hurt will flow fast and heavy for weeks to come.

You should do a "Where's Stu?" page, like the webpage where GPS tagged sharks are tracked (http://www.ocearch.org/tracker).
Maybe put a Paypal button on it to fund the fun.
Don't even pretend I haven't thought of installing a solar powered dash cam and just live streaming all the time.
Tomorrow is looking like Omaha, Gretna, then Lincoln. Slow day. :(

You know what? FUCK YOU micro USB. I use electronic devices every single day, all day long. I charge each device, then all day long. I'm in and out of the car and I bet that each device gets plugged in/out at least 50 times a day. I need a charge port that is more durable. It's too bad that everything has to be so small and delicate now. How is wireless charging coming? Don't even get me started on the fact that they STILL make USB ports that are under 3A each. Fucking ridiculous.
I took this photo because I thought it was funny. Then I decided to look it up, and I guess this is a normal practice for Masonic Lodges. I'll post the picture anyway.

I couldn't agree more. Micro USB is/was the worst fustercluck ever. We've lost a few devices to that frail trash. The simple fact that I have to look at the damn things to get them plugged in right without breaking something is infuriating. It's rare they have a tactile surface to tell which way is up, and there's no standard "up" on all the damn devices.
Soon, everything will be USB-C. No doubt an improvement, but fuck me.
I'll have to look up USB-C, is that what the iPhones have? I've seen that and it seems smart. Hell, a simple barrel charger seems pretty durable and foolproof to me. The fact that the port is directional (both ends even!) is pretty stupid.

Apple uses the Lightning port. 10x better than usb micro-b although it is easy to snap a cable head. However, they were one of the first to roll out usb-c in their new macbook pro (I think).
usb-c is the hot new thing to carry power, high speed data, video, etc. and is reversible like the lightning port. Developed to compliment the new usb3.1 gen2 specs. Intel has a Thunderbolt chipset that does amazing things (same cable, more throughput). There's some cool dock/boxes to consolidate all the video/data connections. Cable/port compatibility is a little crazy in the thunderbolt/displayport video realm, but for simple power and data, usb-c is a great improvement.

My stable currently includes two bikes:
The Light Flight: Ridley Helium SL (I bought from Team Lotto Belisol) with Zipp 404s and SRAM Red 22 shifter/derailleurs, Oval Concepts R900 brakes, FSA SL-K Cranks (with Stages PM), Rotor Q-rings, with S-works finishing kit. It's great for going up steep things fast. under UCI minimum weight.
The Speed Demon: Ridley Noah with Roval Rapide CLX60s and SRAM Force 22 groupset, Ciamillo Micro-GSL titanium brakes, Force Crankset (with Stages PM), S-works saddle and Oval Concepts bar. It's fun to keep up with traffic (at freeway speeds).
Next to be built up is the Aluminum Hate Machine: No frame yet, Mercury C1 wheels, SRAM Rival take-off groupset, rando finishing kit. This is a bike that's meant for bombing down single track, fire roads, gravel, anything really. If I show up on this, you know what's about to happen (and it ain't Netflix-n-chill).
If anyone here knows about bikes, you know all about what I just said. Coming back to Colorado is going to be awesome!
I hope you told the clerk how disappointed you were that they didn't have 89.5. And then told them you needed EXACTLY 6.5 gallons of 89 and EXACTLY 6.5 gallons of 90
Haha, can I even request that?
All that fag talk is going to look pretty cool under my diesel when I catch you riding on MY roads. --The rest of the board.

This part of the earth is extremely sensitive about the cycling culture, so there is no shortage of places to get the latest and greatest. Regardless of brand, if it's top end, you can find it here. I went into one shop and told him I wanted a Team Frame. Not a production model that's close. Not a replica. Not something close. I wanted the REAL thing. Boom. four days later I had the Ridley Helium. Before I paid for it, I called Ridley (in Belgium, because I do that) and verified that it was actually a team frame. THEN I paid for it. I purposely haven't put a name sticker on that side of the bike bc it still has the marks from where the pro rider's name sticker was on there.
Facebook gun commandos saying a Taurus PT1911 is preferred by Operators AND a retired armorer for SEAL Team 6 over Springfield Armory and semi/custom 1911's. He said he also knows Operators. Guy lives in Australia.....

I stick to places where I don't bother drivers.
I acknowledge a couple things about cycling:
1) I haven't paid into the roadway, so I can't be a turd that demands that the flow of vehicular traffic bends to my will.
2) I stay out of the flow of traffic as best I can. Sometimes it's unavoidable that my use of the road impacts the vehicular traffic. Just don't hit me and I don't care.
3) If I notice a driver serving to purposely impact a cyclist, I will lose my shit and track them down.
4) overall: Don't be a dick. That goes for both cyclists and motorists.

That's how I try to do it. I don't like riding around cars at all if I can avoid it. I will admit though, that riding near traffic fulfills a bit of an adrenaline need though. I can see how guys come back from combat and buy crotch rockets.

Very proud of ya.

I don't know the term, so the answer is likely "no."
EDIT: Looked up the term, and no. :(
I don't ride a lot, and usually not even for fun. I picked up a bike to run errands close to my house. Have you ever ridden to the auto parts store and back with a car battery in a back pack? I really need to get some kind of seat rack.
