Ya know..........living here on the fringe of "hipster-ville"....while at the local grocery store...... I noticed a very faggy vehicle in the lot,(Rudolf antlers on the windows and a bright shiny nose attached to the grill), AND the the rainbow colored cute thing hanging from the rear view mirror. I invented yet another useful word that might just be so super catchy, you'll tell your friends and neighbors about it.

Flame-bow.

I know, once you're done laughing at it's funniness, remember to log that into your memory banks as it will come in handy in the future to describe those extra friendly individuals who are gender orientation challenged.

You're welcome.

So my wife paid for everyone in our family to go through the Animal Experience at the Denver Aquarium for a Christmas/Birthday/Graduation present. We got to meet this animal that none of us had ever heard of (and they had a hard time explaining what it was related to). Here is a video of our whole family letting this girl walk all over us. It was overall a great gesture from my wife (who managed to keep it a secret from 15 people) and a very fun experience. +1 for the Aquarium.

Jewish Lightening be a better fix, then the time & money you've dumped in so far. You probably have more $$ invested then most boat owners do in something they use 3 months of the year, maybe 4. Although that car's been in dry dock as long.

Since I've paid off the Amigo a few years ago, I've probably spent less than $1,000 on it not including gas and plates. I never did anything to it but drive it and change the oil. I usually go to do something, see that I don't want to do it, then not do anything. Hell, I didn't drive it for over year.

Been kicking around one myself. AS usual its the hard reality, $$$ doesn't grow on trees, anymore. Don't see selling another gun to finance a bolt action, when used gun values are in the crapper. At least till hillary gets the nod. Especially when trump fucks the R's over by going 3rd party.

I spent the whole day building a quiet box for my generator. Been a bit of a challenge, but it's really coming along nicely.
It's being built like a brick shit house, but once it's finished I need to make sure that it doesn't get too hot in there when it's running for any length of time. It's my first one, so there's some experimenting going on. I think I'm doing a pretty good job.

That's cool OBC. Is this for emrgency genset for the house, or camping?

I bought a campground rated Robin-Subaru 10 years ago when we bought the camper. It's held up well and is pretty quiet.

Would love to have the big 18-20KW units my buddie's have at their places, but I'm OK with mine for any extended power outages here unless it turns into bug out. Something to run to the furnace blower/igniter and fridge as long as the gas is still on and I have fuel.

Yeah, emergency kind of set up.../ SHTF type deal.

What are you using for cooling fans and exhaust on this box ?

Exhaust is one of those "one way" vents and the intake has enough room around it to get plenty of air in the box.....the exhaust should create enough venturi effect to keep stuff circulated.
My first rodeo on this kind of deal, I might need to be making some changes but the jury is still out on that. Once it's done, I'll give it one heck of a test drive to see how everything performs....no overheating or anything like that.

I haven't tried it yet, but if I turn off my main breaker and run the generator into 1 exterior outlet on my house....it will only make that circuit hot, right? How can I set it up so all my outlets are hot off the generator? OR just get an electrician out here. I also have some serious questions about solar power and a few different ideas I have about storing and using solar potential.

I could have been more clear. I guess I was asking aren't all forced air furnaces gas that aren't obviously not gas. I know that sounds stupid. In our neck of the woods we mostly have gas, then probably boilers, then pellet stoves/wood burning, then coal, then oil is my guess. Scott should bet in here soon to key me know what's up.

It all depends on the btu(amount of heat it can produce).

What are you trying to heat?

Nothing, just generally curious.

All kinds of furnaces. Natural gas, propane, oil, waste oil, electric, wood burning.

...most need electricity for their ignitor, thermostat, and blower motor.

Unless/until I add a proper input feed setup to the panel, I will just run cords when needed. This is for short term use if it's too cold/hot outside. Long term, we're bugging out to a friend's with all the food ammo and guns packed in the rv.

He said a 150k btu which is about double most average home furnace capacity, it will use approx 1 gallon of oil per hour.

for me a 30 - 40K BTU oil burner would work real good, especially ceiling mounted. Running the 2 ceiling fans in the "garage" would keep it warmer and faster then the 28K propane heater now in place.

Irving
12-14-2015, 18:26
That seems like a lot of oil to go through, but that's because I have no idea how much that costs. If it is something like a garage that isn't always hated and it costs aprox .08 cents an hour or something, that would be a good deal. Thanks for asking, I'm just curious is all.

That's 1 oil change per hour. You put a WTB on CL, or contact the local auto parts house. In 2 weeks you'd have enough oil to heat the garage all year. Depending the temp you want to keep it at. Now storing that much oil....................

My 730 sq ft garage gets to 55 after running the heater for 1hr, being insulated that temp is t-shirt weather. Turn the ceiling fans on with a small fan moving air across the floor , it's decent temp to be in.
An over head heater with fans on, pulling warm air already on the ceiling should be nice and warm at 30 minutes. Remember a heater isn't running 24/7. Dress warmer, have something on the floor to cover that cold sucking concrete, you'd be surprised how little it takes to keep the cold out.

Irving
12-14-2015, 18:40
Oh I realize all that, I've just never thought about what oil costs. Unless you're running a business out of your garage, you'd probably run it for very few hours compared to a home furnace.

Business owner in town has a nice waste oil furnace. He hasn't had a gas bill in 3 years of service, outside the water heater of course. That's heating a 100 x 60 steel building, 3-4 months.

Yeah, talking to a few folks today, I agree.

I do need to get someone out here to get some stuff done for me on that front.

I'm also needing to do some research on large roof solar panels for charging a back up system. DC with a big battery and inverter setup seems like the way to go. But there sure seems like a lot of research to do, or again....find someone that really knows WTF they're doing with systems like that, and get help to make good purchases/ decisions.

Better sit down when getting quotes for solar. The cost for good panels and everything associated with it. That runs more then the utilities we use in 2 years.

Irving

I think it costs a hell of a lot more than that. $20,000 or something. People finance the set-ups for 20 years.

My generator quite box is coming along nicely.....when it's finished, I bet I could roll it out in front a passing car doing at least 30 mph, and it would incapacitate the car. I'm not kidding.

Believes a person has the right to use a gun to defend themselves, to a loud cheer from the crowd. Sounds good, right? On this week's episode of FUCK YOU, AMIGO!, The Shift Cable.

I damaged my shift cable several years on the Amigo. I was trying to loosen the nut on the shaft that holds the arm that the cable attaches to, without removing the cable. This is a common thing that amateur noobs like myself do. It breaks off the plastic ears that hold the cable in place, and also tweaks the cable so that after you zip tie it back into place, it still doesn't really operate correctly. The shifter will move into the park position, but the transmission doesn't recognize this so even though you can get the key out, it won't start and the parking pawl won't engage so it will roll around requiring you to use the e-brake all the time. My wife learned the tricks and was able to drive it this way just fine. It caused a problem I parked the car and my frail mother-in-law couldn't undo the e-brake and I had to leave work early to pick the kids up from school.

Anyway, the truck has been sitting for over a year and the plates have expired. In the past, we always ended up driving by a mobile station and never had to go in, but since no one has been driving it, I'll have to take it down to emissions and I don't think they'll deal with that BS. So I ordered a new shift cable directly from the factory for $157ish. The cable was only $87 a few years ago when I broke the cable, but I was a lot more poor then. Isuzu is no longer in the US so getting parts is like getting machine guns. I had to order the cable from a guy on another board who can drop ship stuff directly from the factory. So I get the cable, but it's not quite lining up with the RMS. As you can see in this picture, it's like a half inch off. While before the gear selector was pretty consistent about what gear it thought it was in, now it is a hard one gear off (P = R, R=N, etc) and won't start in any gear. At one point, I couldn't even get the keys out. This pisses me off because I've spent damn near $160 to be in an even worse position than I started!

We all know how vague and inaccurate cheap repair manuals are, and with this particular brand, pretty much everything needs to be obtained from forums because the manual blows especially hard. The manual says there is a way to adjust the cable (there isn't). I happened to talk to a friend today and mentioned this in passing and he three way calls his mechanic uncle who also tells me there is a way to adjust the cable length (there isn't). Well, a bench vise (purchased from some chump on here), and a drill MADE that bitch adjustable. Now everything works perfectly and I'm clearly a master mechanic.

A couple side notes. While I've had a track record of breaking shit when trying to fix it, I've been taking my time and doing a much better job. I managed to disconnect the shift cable from the shifter in an utter cluster fuck of tight spaces that would have certainly broken my spirit in the past. I DID accidentally break one of the plastic ears on the brand new shift cable that was the problem in the first place, but everything is holding together. Tune in to next week's episode of FUCK YOU, AMIGO!, The Third Brake Light.
