Get a Lee universal decapping die and throw it in at the 1st position if using a progressive or I prefer just to use one on a single stage and zone out watching war flicks and popping primers out.

I've thought about a universal decapping die, but I'm not sure where it will fit into my process. Also, since everything is brand new, I've really yet to even develop a process. Shot 2 was 1" high, but actually 1" low of where it should be. How? I check strelok again and it's 3 clicks DOWN. Ok, dial it down 6 clicks. Shot 3 and 4 were 1/2" low of poa. I think I need to go 2 clicks low at this temp and zero. Shooting off bags feels like cheating, but will go on until all 4 shots are where they need to be.
Now the AR, that sucked. 4" pattern at 100. Move to 25, and got 5 out of 10 into a quarter sized group 1.5" low. Damn, my shooting at 4x at 100 sucks.

Team is 24/7. No one person is per se "lower", as we all do the same job for the most part. I'm the team lead. We run a very small crew working 4 10's with front and back halves of the week and one day of heavy overlap, so as team lead, it falls on me to fill gaps in coverage if no one is able to assist. Otherwise, one extra day turns a 40 hour week into a 50 hour week.

I also do things like train the team on technical guidance from senior engineers, spend time w/ senior engineers on solution development and process creation for my team, etc.

Most of my folks are in this position to coast to retirement who wanted to get out of the higher level stuff due to the stress of it. It's hard to get people in my shop, so I'd rather not high stress anyone about anything I don't absolutely have to. I have former CCNP's, former cybersecurity folks, former programmers, etc., now mere network analysts and low level engineers.

I've been doing some research into some of these dynamics, and have been finding some very interesting things about the psychology and behavioral traits and associated personality differences about this specific topic.

Had a 65 dodge van with no heat. At the time (before kids knew not to touch something hot) you could but a plug in window defroster / heater. Basically a 12v mini version of a toaster.
Easy to access flat wire strip that would keep the windows frost free. As well as the driver, providing the unit didn't slide off the dash while going in to a turn. It took longer to defrost the windshield than time it took to get to your destination.

Throw in the convertible top on my 62 Bonny was held together with tape and had 2 army blankets wrapped around a piece of wood between the braces.

If I'm lucky the morning of the match I'll get to do a quick adjust zero with an unfamiliar slow poke punch ammo (~2800fps), click click click & that'll have to do. Poit!

No dope for new ammo, in cold weather, out to 800 will ensure that it'll be an interesting if not expensive public lesson in improvisation, my understanding of ballistics, & old fashioned stubborn. Yay.

I've loaded thousand of straight wall pistol before, just never rifle. Setting things up is always extremely slow for me. I just don't have a good brain for proper trial and error type stuff. As an example, I spent time prepping about 50 cases and was ready to go tonight. It's been an hour and I've loaded.... Six. I don't have time to load the 30 I planned for tomorrow's outing. Oh well.

I did it! I ended up loading 50 test rounds for tomorrow. 55gr Hornady SX over Tac 21.5, 22, 22.5, 23, 23.5 grains. In the past, it always seemed to take me FOREVER to dial in the powder drop for a load. It wasn't quite as much of a fuss this time.

Having loaded the SX rounds before. I would not have started any lower than 22.5. It's good to get a baseline of how the rifle performs across the board, but the fps of that 21.5gr is something to be desired. Now accuracy wise, who knows it might be the winner.

This coming from one who was stressed that i was getting a 0.1-0.2 fluctuation in powder weight when i stated reloading . Forget about OAL issues, too.

BUT... reloading is always about ones comfort level, not what other people due when they reload. You can take everything as a suggestion, nothing more.

About half the rounds I loaded turned out like this. It was definitely affecting accuracy. Looks like I'll have to take my die out and see what's going on.

Chamfer the case mouth, allows flat base bullets to seat w/out pushing the neck in a little, or distorting it. Possibly what you're experiencing and it looks like those are seating a tad low. Maybe ;)

Now don't make fun of me too bad, because I have very little rifle experience, probably less than 500 rounds total for every long gun I've ever fired. I am NOT good at shooting supported, or free hand. These targets were at 100 yards with me standing and using a backpack on the hood of my van as a rest. The wind had stopped by then so no blame there. After the first test batch (21.5g), wulf202 and I separated the rounds with the bad noses and we could see that most of the flyers were those rounds, but not all. Either way, I feel like I got productive enough results.

Don't be too hard on yourself about any of your first reloading attempts. The kid and I messed some stuff up too, just make sure what you chamber isn't going to send the bolt back in your face. I think Bob said it...but no posting, no TV, no interruptions when you're reloading.

I think I'm giving the wrong impression. I'm just taking you guys along on the reloading ride. I'm not worried about the reloading as 1) I've done it before enough to navigate and 2) if I don't screw stuff up, or do it wrong, I won't learn anything. I was saying I'm bad at shooting rifles, which is true. Most people put up pictures of groups as brags. Not me. In fact, ever since I started reloading years ago, all my test loads are in batches of 10 because I know that only three shots won't tell me anything useful.

Now don't make fun of me too bad, because I have very little rifle experience, probably less than 500 rounds total for every long gun I've ever fired. I am NOT good at shooting supported, or free hand. These targets were at 100 yards with me standing and using a backpack on the hood of my van as a rest. The wind had stopped by then so no blame there. After the first test batch (21.5g), wulf202 and I separated the rounds with the bad noses and we could see that most of the flyers were those rounds, but not all. Either way, I feel like I got productive enough results.

Doesn't matter where they hit, it's about finding the load the performs best. Looks like 23 gr is it ~ .1-.2 on either side.

I actually have a sandbag and an HBAR Tactical bean bag that I meant to bring, but forgot them. I'm pretty happy with the results as I can see a clear pattern of what load ranges I intend to develop further.

I've been doing some research on this stuff and I ran into an old thread where someone was saying that you couldn't shoot sub-moa for .223 out of an semi-auto. Is that true? Looks like some of those groups are sub-moa, even if I don't personally count them (or know how you're supposed to measure them).

What do you consider a decent magnification scope? I'm only load developing at 100 yards and I could see my hits on the splatter target.

I didn't think so. I've just been typing questions into Google and reading various threads on other forums. When you ask a basic question about something, I find that it generally stopped being discussed several years ago which is a bummer. I don't like reading 10+ year old threads because it seems like info has come a long way since then. Even on simple stuff like what barrel twists to use for calibers.

You can borrow my Larue if you want to convince yourself. I wish I’d had the discipline/motivation/time/balls to take up reloading. I bought everything I’d need to get started, and then sold it all. Just knew I wouldn’t do it enough to get good enough to be worthwhile. You’re meticulous enough in your other projects, I expect it will go well for you.

I'd suggest a squeeze bag for the rear / back or stock. This way you can control the slightest movement needed to raise or lower the muzzle, w/out needing to stop. Remove yourself from the shooting position you're in, find another rear bag get back in to position, realign you sights, etc. I had this one suggested to me during a class, combined with a good bipod, really made a difference in my overall shooting. And yes, Semi autos are capable of sub-moa.

You may be the only person that will ever describe me as meticulous. ;) Basically, if I can fumble through reloading, I think most people interested in trying it can as well. I've had one squib, and one over charged round, but in .40 pistol. I'm really hoping to avoid that in a rifle. Pistol is super easy to load, IMO. We'll see how rifle shakes out. I think if you're so inclined, you can get really deep down the reloading rabbit hole, or not if you're not into that kind of thing.
