Well, family was asking me if I want them to just loan me money so I can buy something because they'd like their ride back. I declined because I can just use that HELOC to fill out whatever I don't have in cash. As the weather is calming down, money is really starting to pick up so a few more weeks and I'll be sitting pretty good if this keeps up. Just this week for example, I made more than I did in two weeks at my last job.

I'd weight the interest rate between the 2. That HELOC is as you say pandora's box. First it's for redoing the kitchen, then bathroom. Next you know, there's a 1-2 year old vehicle in the driveway. $$$ leaking like the girlfriends unexpected period.

Irving
04-08-2016, 21:24
There's no such thing as an unexpected period, except for the very first one.
I never plan to use the HELOC for anything. That rate is 4%, and the rate on a family loan is 0%. However, my family has helped me plenty throughout my life, and I'm a big boy now so I'm not taking any more money from them. Despite the high mileage I'm putting on the borrowed car, I've maintained it and even made some repairs so it will come back in slightly better shape.

Just checked my stats. In February I spent $69.81 in gas, not including that trip to Omaha because the company reimbursed me, and I averaged 17.55 mpg. (This was only for one week though)
In March I spent $299.57 on gas and averaged 17.55 mpg.
This month I'm at $79.56 on gas and only averaging 16.77!!!

HELOC's can be very dangerous. The one thing I refuse to ever screw with is my home. No HELIC's, no refi's, no 2nd mortgages - I just let it ride & keep making my payments.

HoneyBadger was trying to give me a hard time about the HELOC and a car purchase, but I explained that I was applying for a HELOC regardless because I've developed an addiction to acquiring as much available credit as possible. Needing to buy a vehicle at the same time is just unfortunate timing, and not the reason I got the HELOC. On a similar note, our debt level has now reached $500 at 0% interest, not including the mortgage, on which I'm several years ahead.

And don't anyone think I'm being hoity toity. I have next to zero savings and retirement, so I had to make an extreme life change over the last few years. Things are looking up!

I got about 15.2 mpg in my Xterra. Hopefully my new car will get between 23-28.... BUT, something I didn't consider is that I'll need to put premium gas in it, so that adds about 5-10% to the price of gas, depending where you are. Even cheapskates recommend premium in this car. Bummer.

I'll still give you hell about a HELOC. Nothing is worth putting your home at risk. If you can get out of debt, (which I know you can and basically already have) why not just save up to buy what you want instead of borrowing and paying a "stupid tax" (interest) on it? And why the heck would you sacrifice your house as leverage for it???

I'm not really risking anything since I can afford the payments. I realize how that sounds. Realistically, I'd transfer the amount to a credit card for a one time transfer fee and comfortably pay down the balance interest free in a few months. I can't borrow the car forever, is the reason for not being able to save up 100% of the purchase price. I'll be halfway there by next Friday.

That house I was at this morning probably needed you. We were looking for a roof leak and everything was tight and correctly installed. I just happened to look over the edge and saw a drain pipe just above the second story window. I asked if they had a humidifier and they did. I told them they needed to contact an HVAC guy.

HoneyBadger

After some basic calculations, I should be saving quite a bit of money with my car switch.

I project that the Xterra would cost me about $40,500 to own for the next 5 years (9,500 depreciation, 11400 gas, 15000 still owed in payments, 2500 insurance/registration, about about 2200 in tires and maintenance).

I project that the new car will cost me a maximum of $22,800 to own for the next 5 years (2,000 depreciation, 6600 gas, 4400 total purchase price+registration, 2200 insurance/registration, and an estimate of 5800 for tires and maintenance).

The Xterra numbers above are pretty accurate, but I priced everything for the new car pretty liberally. Depreciation, insurance, and registration will probably be a bit less than the numbers above, and I don't expect to dump $1000 every year on broken stuff... but even if I spend $2000 a year on unexpected maintenance, I'll still be about $13,000 ahead after 5 years. And all that is assuming that nothing would break on the Xterra and just about everything would break on the new car.

I actually would prefer to find an '05 with lower miles, like they just sold. I found it on a lot on Colfax. He wants almost twice what I want to pay, but I think I can get something done. He told me $11,900. I'm going to offer $7,000 cash and go from there.

This disposable world we are living in feels strange to me. Flourescents in the garage acted up, burning bulbs, so I need new transformers. New transformers $15, new bulb 2 pack $10. So $25 to get it back to par. New LED shop light at costco about $28 bucks. The bulbs will last my lifetime and are instant on and bright even in sub zero. Yeah, going to pick up 2 more LED light and call it good.

Been replacing my incandescent bulbs & CFL's in my house lately with LED's. Even replacing the CFL's on the outside of my garage with 100W equiv's. Expected to last ~20 yrs, use less than 1/4 the electricity of incandescent, no toxins and don't need to warm up like CFL's. Just a smarter way to go.

Never bought into the whole CFL ideology, just more .gov shit being shoved down our throats. When I needed to replace some bulbs a couple of years ago I couldn't find any incandescents (didn't stock up before the ban went into play).

The LED shop lights are awesome. It's definitely a plus them firing right up in the cold. And no weird light patters like the fluorescents in the cold. And I also like the whiter light.

Have a few of the 48" led's in the shop. Ran one of these units in a hard to fit regular lights. Taken the left over and going to use in the shop. For the money including transformers worth it.

Keith, how are you treating that tennis elbow. I was recently diagnosed with it (by myself), and want it healed up as quickly as possible.
I need to make an appointment for Physical Therapy, but I keep forgetting too. Was told by the surgeon there's really nothing that can be done other than wait till I'm older for my muscles to weaken to equal the tendons strength. The Dr had tennis elbow too.

prolotherapy worked for a slap lesion i dealt with. Gave relief to a few other people we know that tried it vs surgery or cortisone injections. Some swear by it, others at it. YMMV

Erni,
you can get LED retro fit kits for the flouescent fixtures cheaper that buying new LED fixtures. You'll have less waste than replacing.

They are basically the LED tubes, and all you do is gut the old fixture and rewire the end sockets to the incoming AC wires.

SSB, I looked online and the cost was almost the same. Heck even at costco the led bulb retrofit is right next to the fixture. They are both the same price..[emoji781] [emoji782]

I just bought two more lights and the garage will be all LED this week. The single led over my bench puts out more light than both the flourescents over the car stalls. If anyone needs some "vintage" shop lights let me know.

Yea, woe is me. We're empty nesters and make too much money.

How cumz I always broke?

We do help support one of my sons a great deal but unfortunately it's not a writeoff. Like paying student loans, helping with rent from time to time, etc. Part of being a parent/grandparent. We exceed the caps for any deductions for all that too.

I max out my 401K, try to put a little extra away in savings every paycheck, but then it all goes back to the .gov every year. I mean WTF? I would have to withhold $1k more every month!

My mother-in-law does that, but it's in Spanish. She thinks if she does that, I'll pick it up like the kids did. Only since she doesn't watch me every day after school, it hasn't been working out that way. It's like that scene in Happy Gilmore.

Wife comes home with the grandson and 4 yo pseudo gd this morning and they all climb in bed and I'd only had about 5 hours sleep. The boy is not happy but falls asleep. Great, now I'm up and cranky.

Got cranky/irritated/confused with some folks on the phone today. Misspoke and had to go back later and apologize.

Corp e-mail has been down for 8 hours now anyway and no comms from HQ to managers or anything. Too bad the outage hasn't helped me get ahead of the workload.

Need to call the guy tomorrow. I was supposed to have a delivery date and invoice last Monday. Sorry been a cluster *^%# also you know you can pm or call if you have any questions.

Cufflinks are a wash but I can do any MT logo in any color / size you want. I have a few more decals that aren't site specific too. Working on some Safe magnets and possibly coffee cups. Once I can find a reliable and cost effective supplier the Shirts and hoodies will get a redesign and hope to have some inventory instead of doing single orders. I have literally checked damn 12 shops and yet to even have one give me a decent estimate or some even failed to give me a quote period. So we are using the same guy as the last run, problem is he does everything in a mass scale so he is crazy busy. I will call tomorrow and post up in the merch thread some answers tomorrow or Friday.
