Shits different around this board than it used to be, but time changes everything whether intended or not...and that's a natural thing.

I know there are a lot of really cool folks here with lots of information to share and learn from, or other members to help when they need it. And I'm happy to do that when those opportunities arise. As mentioned in another thread very recently, there aren't a lot of gun boards like this one and I'm very well aware of that....and I also really dig this place.

Recently, I'm feeling pretty sure that through my own actions I've exhibited an identity that frankly some folks are tired of. I'm not necessarily happy about that, but the obvious thing regarding that is to focus some attention towards myself and how and when I hit the Enter button, and do that with less reckless abandon than I have in the past.

I need to take participating here more seriously if I'm going to earn any respect from any of you.

Taking care of someone with a serious dental situation is uncomfortable for a few different reasons.

The biggest one in my opinion following the constant discomfort even with what should be sufficient pain killers and antibiotics, is not being able to have the tooth removed because of the potential of dying from blood poisoning. It really sucks to watch someone you care about in pain, and there is nothing you can do about it.

OtterbatHellcat
09-23-2017, 06:40
Good morning.

I've been wondering what the heck I would have to do if myself or someone else had a serious dental problem during shtf. You can't pull a tooth for someone if the infection could kill them, antibiotics have a shelf life. It would really suck to be super prepared with food and supplies at a great shelter.....to have a bum tooth take you out.

OtterbatHellcat

I think we all know that banging it out with an ice skate blade and a rock...isn't going to work out very well.

ray1970
09-23-2017, 06:44
Your tooth scenario is way over thought. You think people in third world countries with no dental care kill over every time they lose a tooth?

OtterbatHellcat
09-23-2017, 06:46
Actually I was thinking of the infection part.

ray1970
09-23-2017, 06:53
I knew what you meant but realistically running a "what if" scenario where a dental issue causes an infection and leads to death just seems a little far fetched.

What about tetanus? Say you step on a rusty nail? Are you up to date on your inoculations?

OtterbatHellcat
09-23-2017, 07:06
Hell no, no idea when the last time I got one of those shots.

I'm reading stuff right now about shtf antibiotics though. Dying from an infection is a real possibility IMO...and even taking the wrong stuff in the wrong doses can jack you up too. It deserves a serious effort to try and understand what it is you need to do.

Fish-mox ain't gonna take care of everything if the SHTF scenario.

No, it won't. It's a good start, but there are a bunch of other antibiotics to have on hand also that can be boight sans prescription. I don't have links to them all handy right now.

And as far as expirations on meds...a lot of it is bullshit. I read a study done by the US Gov. that tested antibiotics something like 15 years after their exiration date and they were 80% effective or so, IIRC. I guess I'll have to look for that too tomorrow (later today) if I remember and have time.

OtterbatHellcat
09-23-2017, 07:41
That's true from some of the stuff I've been reading. It looked like 90% was the cut off, and many appeared to be still effective even farther than the 15 mark.

I think only Tetracycline is the antibiotic that actually has a shelf life that's close to what's on the package. The rest, they're good for a long long time, they just put the expiration on there for legal reasons.

And fish-mox is the exact same thing you'd get from Walgreens. Comes off the same assembly line.

Funny story...

Coming back from the dentists office picking up another script.... driving north on Monaco the flashy vans are known to be between 1st and 4th Ave quite often.

As usual, I wait till getting within the van operators sight, and proceed to give him the finger for as long as I'm in his path of vision. After passing the flashy van, the guy in lane two gets a little bit ahead of me and sticks his arm out the window with the "Okay" sign......the light at 6th was red and I slow down and give him the thumbs up, and he's smilin'.

It was a cool exchange of "fuck you for giving me a ticket ability..... that didn't work today" kind of thing. Win.

It's super cool to not be at work, .........but my mind is cluttered with a million things it seems.

A rational thought towards a comment like that might be something like "wtf are you doing posting here if you have more important things to be doing?". My response would be.."Jesus Christ, it's my effin weekend, let me not worry about shit for at least a day...or two".

I don't want to be Go Go Go all the damn time, like at work. That's why I hate everyone that wins a lottery, and has every day to do what the hell ever.

I have a lot of regulatory and compliance work due before the end of the year but my manager has decided that we all need to have it completed by the end of October instead. So basically I have to cram three months of work into one month. On a positive note, things should be slow for me in November and December and I still have about four weeks of vacation time to use before the end of the year. Guess I'll have plenty of time off around the holidays.

Redid daughters room. Went from stupid bright green to gray walls. one coat premium paints from Lowes did the trick. For edges and cutoffs I used the hairy pad with edge rollers thing. Thought it was a gimmick, but damn it worked very well on the cieling cutoffs. Always tape off the baseboards, more so the paint does not drip on them and the carpet. I use a piece of cardboard instead of drop cloth and just move it where I am rolling.

And yeah, it took several days.

Mazin
10-01-2017, 23:08
Yea I use a shield under the trim when I'm cutting. I'll have to check out lowes because the Beher was BS. The only paint I have ever had any luck with is Benjermin Moore. I will swear by it any day of the week and twice in Sunday. When I was 18 a buddy of mine and I decided to start a painting company because let's face it everyone hates painting. Well we got hooked up with a couple Rotary members and mostly doing flat wall tenant finish (All brush and roll). This was prior to 9/11 And we were getting $1.25 sqft. Serous question has anyone on here brush and rolled 3 coat a 15,000sqft office suite in 15 days.......i have and it blows [ROFL1]

Ended up doing 8 years and the only reason we stopped was my buddy didn't want to take it to the next step and I said screw it and went back to school.......hindsight i should have just started my own company but I was and still am done with painting, just seems it's not done with me yet

They failed mine last time for a fuel cap gasket that had "cracks". No codes or failure to maintain pressure mind you, just a visual issue.

I will need to replace it before the next one is due, but I just hoofed it over to my local Audio repair guy, got a loaner cap from another car that was in for service, and passed their dumb visual.

What a long day this was, but it was for good overall.

Out of all the things accomplished today, there was a pretty good scare at one point. At the homeowners suggestion, I plugged an air compressor into his dining room wall outlet and began to pressurize his sprinkler system for winter. He can't see very well, and also had some problems remembering which valves needed opened and closed. While I'm trying to figure out what controls what, the compressor has been running...and I noticed an odor...thought the compressor was getting hot. Some minutes later, I notice the smell getting stronger when I walked back into the house where the control panel is.

Checked the outlet on the wall and it must have been 150 degrees or higher, unplugged immediately...and watched smoke coming out of the wall. I about shit myself thinking we could have started his house on fire.

In short, finished that task, and then replaced the melted receptacle. I'm thinking it's time to have a professional come out and evaluate the breakers and service in the home.

I eyeball boresight optics all the time across the street to a tree. Always seems to get me on paper when I hit the range. One or two shots to dial into zero with a solid mount. Ya'll should know that trick by now. Maybe a bit more work to zero groups out to 200yds after if that's the goal for a bolt gun.

Heya Brutal+?

How'd your hunting trip turn out?

Unproductive.

Opening morning we saw a herd of 50 (my count) 1200 yards off going up a ridge. Two hunters posted at the top of that tagged out. Probably 100-150 yd shots for them. Animals did not turn towards any of our group, we had two guys about 500-600 yds from them (between me and the herd). The herd hightailed it back down the hill and south (away) from us that were to the north.

At that location, I generally sit lower and in a spot where if they turn north and run the draw or sidehill one big hill, they have to cross my path either left or right. I also overlook an open area creek bottom that always shows lots of sign and that we've seen them use. Just never seem to be in the right place at the right time.

Second day, heard a war start further south. Saw 6-8 animals 2000 yds off come over the ridge and look around, but they turned back. I think the two guys up there ran out of ammo and didn't pack anything out.

Wind/scent wasn't a factor in either case, just bad luck they didn't turn our way.

Today right after work I hauled ass home and put some Flex Seal tape on the outside of the affected area, then silicone the inside of the cracks....when that dries I'll apply some Dynamat on the inside as well. Hopefully that will be a decent fix for it that also has some rigidity to it. I've been to Salt Lake once......the reason I was there was fantastic and I will remember it for the rest of my life. I did notice while I was there, that the city .....Sucked.

Ya, it's a big city with not much to do. Nothing is open on Sunday either, that really sucks.

Well, that and the liquor stores are really effed up....and the folks that I ran into while I was there, for the most part, kinda had a shitty attitude which doesn't help the image that sticks in my mind.

Stop at Bon Ricos in Evanston for dinner. Make reservations, hopefully you'll thank me for it later. 17 yrs in Evanston, small restaurant on main st, absolutely killer meal the wife and i had. Thankfully they forgot our appetizer, or we would have never finished our dinner. Come springtime we're heading that way just to eat there again.

Won't be near Evanston other wise I would. Flying DEN to SLC, then driving to Tooele

The pleasure you say? lol

Yes, because I can have multiple wives when I'm there HAHA

Decided to create a workbench for woodworking and other projects. Ended up with the solid door core for the surface, and the workbench will be attached to the wall and fold up. Still working through the leg design, but I think 1" or larger gas pipes will be used for legs. This way the legs csn be removed cleanly. I did not want the legs attached as the door will be next to a parked car and I am worried the legs will protrude too far. Also no one offered a good way to attach removable legs.
But of course life is getting in the way of finishing this little project.

Why not hinge the legs to the bench top so they fold up with it?

Another option (one I did) if there's room is build a storage cabinet under the benchtop (like half as deep) and use it as the stand.

This bench is going against the side wall where my car is usually parked. When folded it should be flatter than 3". If I leave the legs on I am worried the kids will either bump into them or ding the car door. I have another bench but it's boxed in on 3 sides and anything large is a pain to work on.

Solid core door = 1 3/4"
1 1/4" sub frame
1" pipe legs hinged or pinned to recess into sub frame = 3" thick bench when folded up and pipes recessed so car doors can only bump wood. Can't really bump at all if bench hinges up to wall when closed instead of down when closed.

Very good configuration in limited space and only have to handle 1/2 of door weight if hinged to wall. Legs are automatic if also hinged or pinned.

You think the door needs a subframe?

Not necessary, 1 1/4" is negligible for support anyway, acts as buffer/bumper for steel legs when folded closed, some depends on door itself. I prefer 3" frame on all benches but a good rigid solid core door can handle most homeowner duty jobs and save space. I would use three legs along the length regardless of sub frame.

Hmmm, now that you mention it 3 legs make a lot of sense. Dangit, I just bought 2 sets of 1" pipe and flanges tonight, guess I will have to go back.

The wall cleat to door attachment will be with 7 hinges at about 12" spacing. A bit overkill but i got all those ginges for $5 at Restore when I picked up the door. I think the fasteners will cost me more than that. The cleat is a solid poplar board I picked up and is same thickness as the door, so it should be strong enough.
The cleat to stud mounting will be with 1/4 x 4 screws from Lowes. I think they were for bolting garden box timbers together. I found info for thise bolts that says they should be plenty strong.

And yeah this is a hobby bench, so it won't be used like a heavy duty pro carving bench. Damit, getting exited to finish this project.

With the third leg and cleat/hinges you are using it will get the job done. Also consider how secure it in closed position. You hinging it up or down when closed?

Up. There is concrete skirt around the garage and it would be in the way. Two bolts will lock it in place, may add a rope or a way to lock it too just in case.

FWIW, I used a piano hinge on mine, but it was just a piece of chipboard that I sealed and more than half of it rests on the shelf below. In the end, kinda useless to hinge it because it's always full of crap anyway and my car clears and I don't really need anyone using the pass side doors.

You going to secure those legs together near the middle/bottom? Might consider a piece of allthread or something to tie them together.

To secure it up, I'd be looking at a sliding or captive gate latch.

No the legs will be free standing. But once they are threaded into the floor flanges attached under the bench there is nowhere for them to go. Cutting 1" pipe will be a drag, but the sawsall should help.

I typically use a captive gate latch type system for my sex slaves, and or grounds keepers/maids.

The basement works great, but I try to be a little more progressive with that stuff.
