Flyboy: create multiple resumes for different prospective employers. If a company understands it when you say: "Maintained MMIII ICBMs over a period of 365 days that resulted in 100% operational readiness rate" then it's possible that other companies have no clue about how important that is. You can use the same bullet, but re-word it for a non-tech company.

Been shooting some balls around the table tonight, and doing really well. I think if I'd stayed with the pool instead of getting into the guitar stuff, I'd be a poisonous opponent to any accomplished pool player today. I'll never put the guitar down though, there's too many songs I want to learn...not to mention getting to the point where I can lay down a really solid solo. That is a goal in my life.

Touch bases, we could work something out. IMO the true test of a good pizza, is eaten cold for breakfast, OR around 2-4 in the a.m when you have one of those I want something to snack on, and the spouse is out like a light. Or still pissed from the last time you tried waking her, 2 hours before she has to get up for work.

I had a largish claim today, and it didn't take me quite as long as it would have before, and I was less intimidated by the size. I guess that shows progress, but I left feeling pretty proud for meeting the challenge. The basement of this house is a few hundred square feet larger than my entire house. The thing with nice houses is that rooms aren't just simple boxes, there are all kinds of coves and fancy trim, etc. Where I'm going with this is that it takes a long time to draw all the rooms, then measure everything, then figure out what needs to be done in each room. After that, I get to go home and do it all electronically as I put it into my computer. So today was a pretty good day.

It took me two hours at this house today, and all the mitigation equipment was still there attempting to dry out this 1,500 sq/ft basement. Sometimes mitigation stuff is just fans and dehumidfiers, but in this case, the heat was on as well. It must have been 95-99 degrees in there, and I showed up in a sweater. The marble counter tops were hot to the touch it was so hot in there. I stripped off that sweater right away and got to work. I was afraid all my sweat was going to smudge my pencil blue print. Still working now, but in a good mood about it. I like showing improvement at stuff.

When's the next match and the next Penny Pincher Build video?
We train our measure guys to take pics or video of the job, in a manner that will help them avoid trips back to "check" something. When finalizing drawings a manager reviews drawings and video/pics with tech to look for pitfalls an accuracy issues.

Our industry is also starting to utilize tablets/pads with software designed to do production drawings on site that can be uploaded directly to the server or emailed to office so that tech and manager can review before leaving site.

I'm going to buy a GoPro and start using it for pictures. The fisheye lens makes capturing rooms so much easier.

That's probably a lot cheaper than buying a DSLR and a fisheye lens.

Unless that basement has dehumidifier going , with all that heat. The issue of mold should be a concern. Too much heat with that water damage, can do more harm than good.

We went to tablets back when I worked for the assessor's office many years back, but tablets back then pretty much sucked. The sketch software at the time was pretty finicky as well. I'm sure the modern stuff is much better. Of course I was happy enough when we started using digital cameras.

Adding building a house along with Mil to Civvie transition. Got some serious desire for pain there.

The wife and I got married, moved from Denver to NM, bought acreage, started building a house, and left well paying jobs to work part-time until we found something stable, all within the span of 3 months. Let me tell you, it was pure fun.

Most of the time the designers already have preliminary drawings uploaded to the server and tech just pulls it up and proceeds to verify and make corrections as needed.

The drawing/sketch software is much better than just a few years ago.

Just out of curiosity, what software are your people using? Last company I worked with was Tyler Technologies. They were public sector/ gov orientated, but seemed to be on the right track. I know the private sector has about a billion different companies pimping their product.

Nov 2013:
Moved to different state
Sold a house - first buyer fell through at closing date
Had to find a house in a different state
Bought 2nd home since first home wasn't sold
Sold second home
New job
and wife was prego
Drove the moving truck in a blizzard
Other housing goods moved by military BURNT DOWN!
December 2013:
fought with company and AF to get refunded money since all my stuff was total loss.

Yeah, I had one built and I'm considering having another built. What's up?

Obviously you would do it again, but what were some things you would change?

I am looking at purchasing a big plot of land, but then would have to get water/sewer/gas/electric to the property, and then house costs $$$. Does it pay off in the end? Or would you suggest looking at smaller lot with house built already?

I'm ready for this to be over so I can take my time and do something nice for the wife/house/cars. At least the Focus is currently working as well as ever. I ended up fixing two problems today; no more CEL. Yay!

Here guys with kids under 4, listen to this RadioLab pod cast. http://www.radiolab.org/story/91697-numbers/

The very top play button plays the entire hour long program, which is awesome, as RadioLab always is, or you can listen to each of the three parts. The first part is about babies and math. Pretty interesting, and has an experiment you can try with your own kid!

Picked up a few months worth (ever since it's been cold) worth of dog crap in the back yard today. I switched to a new grocery bag when the crap started falling out of the handles on the sides.
Lol! We try to pick it up every Sunday night before the trash pickup on Monday and we still have at least half a grocery bag of poopsicles (Mrs HB calls them that too)

Tell me about it. I've been working an extra 2-3hrs a day, every day, and some weekends just to keep the boss happy. I have heard nothing but bad things about the position I am going to fill in May, but I can't wait to get there.

Can your "boss" write something that bad at this point in the game to screw you down the road ? You're not getting paid for the xtra time AND being transferred too.

Cool, I'll check it out. I've been meaning to set up my phone with some podcasts for a while now. I have a 40 min drive to work and 40 min drive back each day... I need something to listen to that will make me smarter, instead of dumber.

Actually yeah... My he has another month to write my performance report. Either way, I want to do a good job and leave people remembering me in a positive way. I'm doing good things for the big picture at work, but most days, I'd rather spend that time with my family.

That's the thing - he has a wife and 2 kids... But he happily spends 12+ hours at the office every day. [Dunno]

I really don't understand how his marriage works. He ALWAYS places his career ahead of his family. I have argued a few times about it, but at the end of the day, I'm basically at his mercy.

So I was in the middle of this podcast http://www.radiolab.org/story/haunted/ , standing in the garage, looking for something when I caught a glance of movement going across the partially open door into the house. It immediately sent shivers down my spine, HARD. Now, I have two cats, a dog, a wife, and a kid. I figured it was one of them, but it didn't change the fact that it gave me the shivers. It turned out to be my wife, who got yelled at for scaring me.

This issue has always amazed me in two different respects:

The first is a concept I was taught called 'Mastering the Third Drawer.' It's a concept that basically means to prioritize your work, and then be able to quantifiably justify those priorities to your subordinates. It's very easy to do once you get the hang of it. One of the finer points that's worth mentioning is that the boss should never encumber his subordinates with those things that are not a priority. We all have to be careful about what we actually dive into and get pesonally involved in. I explain my priorities, explain the different projects, delegate the projects, and then understand that it's up to ME to guide their work. That means that I will have to go to their work station, site, bay, whatever and provide direction for keeping them on the course that I have laid out for them. The folks who are very good at this most often work for people that haven't figured this out. I'm ready to go at 3PM, but I have to sit around and wait for my boss to tell me that HE's done with HIS work. that's crap. If the boss does their job and actually manage projects, not just delegate-n-wait, then maybe he'd be done with work, too.

The second concept is something that has always been a pet peeve of mine, and it goes to the very reason that most enlisted Soldiers/Airmen/Saiors/Marines think very low of their Officers. Simply put, What good is mission accomplishment if you've burned out all your Soldiers? Will there be long nights? Yes. Will the be hard work? Yes. Will there be some definite 'What-The-Heck-Was-THAT?!' moments? Yes. The Officer that stays engaged is the one that will ultimately be more successful. Why? He's got the support of his whole unit/section/squad/etc. Soldiers will walk to the ends of teh earth for an Officer that shows courtesy when there is nothing to gain by showing courtesy. All it takes is ONE Officer to sit their troops down and say, "This is about to suck. Here's why......... We need to get the following things done......... Here is our timeline........ If you need me, I'm going to be in bay#3/squad room/etc. helping SGT Smith accomplish this mission. NCOs, let's meet up again at <time> and please update me. I'll go update the Commander and keep him out of our hair. Take the next ten minutes to update your families and friends, please."

The Officers Plan
The NCOs Supervise
The Soldiers Execute.

When the planning is done, the Officers should help Execute or Support the Execution. This means that *gasp* they might have to take instruction from an NCO. Most Officers will see this as demeaning, and that's why they'll never be as successful as others. Taking instruction from the NCOs isn't something that pulls from an Officer's authority. A LOT of Officers are just too sensitive about taking instruction from those who they outrank.

We had a LtJg who was more concerned about getting promoted, than his squadron. Fortunately there were others in the chain of command who had their shit together and knew how to get things done efficiently. It worked out as the LtJg wasn't able to pass his test for Lt so he got transferred.
Time management is a pet peeve, we saw it working for the state. There's the get it done AND there's the state employee mentality. One handles business, the other is sipping coffee complaining they don't have time .

What's that saying, A real leader looks for Solutions,Not Problems.

Talked to a Union Pacific Rep. Basically I have to be out of the military before I can apply for their positions. So just like every other job I want to higher on for, I have to be a civilian first, and that sucks.

We were lucky in that my wife had a highly marketable (albeit low paying) skill as a Paramedic, and had something lined up before we got out. I took 30 days terminal leave in Dec 1987 and collected my unemployment for the last two weeks of Jan AFTER I already had a job.

I'm very thankful that I've been gainfully employed since Feb 1988.

Especially with pistol powder. A few extra bucks, spread out over that many rounds is inconsequential, and it's always better to have some on hand that cost a little extra, than to not have any.

I noticed this past weekend he had at least two 8lb jugs of Varget ($239.99), and some other powders that I haven't seen anywhere else recently.
