Oh yeah, and I could have died today. We were looking for a leak toward the edge of a 3-story condo. I was walking to the edge and noticed the deck felt spongy as I started to put my foot down. I pulled my foot back, rebalanced, and found that there was NO decking at all. If I would have stepped into that hole, I have no doubt I would have pitched head first right off the edge of the roof. Water had rotted the decking out from under the shingle and the shingles were still in tact over the hole, so you couldn't see it.

Haha, I was thinking while I was running that someone might call the police on me. I was running down the middle of the street in Stapleton because the ladder kept getting caught in the trees along the sidewalk.

Irving
04-21-2016, 20:35
My wife asked the same thing. It was only like a 4/12. No where to really tie off at. Also, if I tied off on every roof, I'd never get anything done. Colleague and I were talking the other day, and essentially, we just get paid to have a pair of balls. That's really all it boils down to. I texted the adjuster and requested photos of the hole in the roof today. I might have some other photos of a 16/12 barrel tile I was on today. I couldn't really explain to my wife why I didn't tie off on that one either. The situation didn't really call for it. Pictures would explain better.

I'm tripping over the stuff here.

I keep buying when I see a decent deal. 500 rds here, 500 rds there.

Haven't reloaded for a while either. I think in Dec I loaded about 100 rds .45ACP and worked up some 300BO loads I've not been able to go shoot. :-(

I've only taken my AR to the range once since I got here... personally owned semiautomatic rifles on a military base make lots of people nervous for some reason. [Dunno] I need to get in touch with the Godfather's local protection to find somewhere else to shoot.

And now that we're officially out of debt (except for the mortgage) I can jump on some of the ammo deals that keep showing up at walmart! They had several hundred boxes of the Federal 325 Auto Match .22LR last week.

Cabelas has CCI Blazer 9mm right now for $0.21/rd shipped (free shipping over $99) but my tax rate is probably lower. Decent enough price all things considered. Can you still buy online and ship to CA? haha

I can still buy ammo online (for now, anyway), but the local Wally World has just about everything I would need. They always have tons of .223 and 9mm on the shelves. .223 is priced at about $.40/rd (I wouldn't buy it at this price unless the sky was falling), while the 9mm is about $.24/rd for good brass cased stuff. Not too bad.

Um, yea, my PTO doesn't count in my utilization either.

Talk about hypocrites.

1. "Work Life Balance" = use your PTO or lose it.
2. Must maintain 70% utilization (client billing)
3. Can do 30% "other" that's stuff agreed upon. New certifications, IP development, mentoring, etc.
4. Travel and PTO don't count.
5. Company Policy that you can't double dip billing clients. Technically not even supposed to "work" more than one project at a time. I'm juggling 5 right now plus lots of other hats.

Talking out of both sides of their mouths they are...

Sitting in the waiting room while the wife gets whatever she's got going done at Waxing the City. Hair removal place I guess. A dude walks out of a room and pays at the front desk. Thinking "WTF is a dude getting waxed for?". Oh wait. Not gay. Hipster. Now it all makes sense.

Guess my car is (sorta) done.

Cam adjuster replacement, passenger side plus the scheduled service (oil/filter) . $1300-ish with aftermarket parts and friends&family discount.

Now I need to see if the TC I paid good money for 6K miles ago is truly acting up and go after that shitstick.

Gotta get this emissioned first, so it's a around town car again for a while.

You're going to put fire on concrete and not leave an impression?

[ROFL2]

I hope you have fire brick on the bottom to protect the concrete.

Irving
04-24-2016, 21:54
Allow me to expand for you. Build the circle of stones, fill the base with lava rock or other crushed gravel, line circle with fire brick to protect blocks, burn fire. I meant that I could easily remove it when it's time to move out of this house, or it starts to look terrible (like the barrel stove).

Jeans needle is a size 16 irc. For Cordura with size 69 (?) thread you need to step up to an 18 atm. Some shops have larger size 18-19 needles, which will work but tension has to be super high. It's ok but not good, 2-3 layers max. Cordura and 69 thread belongs in a light industrial machine. (Been a while, probably got some of the sizes wrong)
I started the same as you, with an old machine, then max size needles and finally an idustrial pre WW2 Singer. The thing will run a size 21 needle or better. A 21 size needle looks more like a 16ga nail than a needle.

I'm the 3rd owner of the machine. First owner supposedly was a Jewish tailor that survived ww2 by tailoring German uniforms. That ir owner number 2 was blowing smoke up my arse.

I have a brand new machine, I couldn't get the zig zag on the old machine so I never learned. Wife came home with a new Brother machine last year and I've been using that. I never thought I'd sew cordura, but now that I have a product to make, I may need to pick up one of HBAR's machines.

Save yourself the pain and get the right machine. Walking foot with reverse is ideal, but I make do with a fwd only no walking foot and clutch motor.
Clutch motors are a pain, get a servo motor if you can swing it.

Just so we're clear, this is what is happening. This is an old picture with a different material (denim and a plastic backing), but it's doing the same thing. Last time I just blew out the machine and changed needles (the tip was broken) and everything was fine after that.

I sew clothes right now, but I have patterns for bags and toys that I'm looking forward to trying. And when it's craft far season, I've got tons of mittens, hats, scarves and the like ready to go.

It IS very fun, and there are a million possibilities with a decent machine.

We're going to be trying to sew leather, once we get our older machines spruced up.

Here is the project I mentioned with the denim and heavy duty plastic backing. I was able to go through triple layers of denim plus double layers of plastic when sewing this up using the jeans needle.

Here is the ladder flag. It's not complex or impressive, but I do use it 24 hours a day and it holds up nicely. Nylon webbing is very easy to work with and you can make all kinds of cool stuff. I was considering making a soft ladder out of webbing actually. At some point, I'd like to make my own single point sling.

As far as clothing repair goes, it IS a bit of a different beast, but I would imagine it could be done. You've done YouTube, I'm sure. What are some of the other sites you've used for learning to sew?

Started by trying to make my own tac gear, back when it was expensive and choices were poor; not much of an issue now. Then I started doing some mends for the kids since they outgrow stuff, not worth buying new for 2 months of use. Now I will tackle a project when I have time, so not much. I did make a bag for 10 FAL mags, and a handgun sleeve, couple of gp bags, and some misc.

That's excellent, Erni! A good, solid skill to have, and definitely one put to use when you've got kids.

Good stuff, Irving! What kind of a machine do you use?

Pretty much exclusively YouTube. I use a Brother JX2517. After hearing me swear and curse and cuss at my machine all morning, both before AND after the trip to Joann Fabrics, she made me watch the dvd. I sat through the painful 18 minute instruction video watching everything I already knew.

I found this video, and it pretty much exactly describes my issue, as what is pictured on the last page is ALL top thread. I'm going to see if I'm some how so stupid that I haven't threaded the top thread correctly.

It's threaded correctly, but there is definitely some issue with the top thread. The thread spool moves at lightning speed compared to usual while this issue is happening.

Thread tension?

I know on ma's old Kenmore I inherited (when she got a new one) I had to fiddle with the top thread tension knob depending on the material and stitch used.

TheGrey
04-30-2016, 16:20
The rule of thumb is: when something goes wrong with your top thread, it is something wrong with the bobbin. If something is wrong with your bottom thread, it is something wrong with the top.

I haven't watched the Youtube video you've posted, and I don't have a Brother sewing machine. Have you called the store, or brought the results to the store and spoken with someone about it? They're pretty good at helping you with troubleshooting.

1) When did you change out your needle last?
2) Have you messed with the tension at all in your bobbin?
3) Swap out your bobbin for a freshly-threaded one.

Irving
04-30-2016, 16:35
It's working now, but I can't figure out what is different. The problem was that it wasn't picking up the bottom thread from the bobbin. I took everything out and put it back in about ten times each. Everything has been correct. The only thing that I've changed was to pick the bottom thread up with the needle before putting the fabric in, and laying both threads on top of the foot and out the back. I've spent hours sewing on this machine and have never had to do those steps before.

That's actually what you're supposed to do before each time you sew. Only, the tails of the thread aren't supposed to go on top of the foot and out the back; you raise the foot, manually move the top needle down to pick up the bobbin thread while holding on to the top thread. The needle will dip down, the raise up and you'll feel a little tension on the thread you're holding because the lower thread will be looped around the top thread. Take a pen or closed shears and slide them beneath the sewing foot, sweeping in a horizontal arc, and you'll catch both threads, which you then sort of push to the back of your sewing foot. When you slide your material under the foot, the threads will be nicely out of your way.

I'm glad you were able to resolve your issue!

Mine has an auto loader thing, and it picks up the bottom thread automatically and then I just pull the excess out of the way each time. It just wasn't picking up the bottom thread for some reason. Stupid sewing.

TheGrey

It picks up the bottom thread automatically? Ooooo, that's a fancy machine!

There are some days when I just think Skynet is trying to control the machines. It sounds like this was one of them.

Irving
04-30-2016, 17:29
I really need to work on buttonholes. I've fucked up every buttonhole I've attempted. It didn't help that I didn't know the machine came with a buttonhole foot though. I've also learned that if you don't leave enough material sticking out from the right side of the foot, that the needle will jam the material down into the machine and jam it all up.

TheGrey
04-30-2016, 17:35
Yes, that is the truth with every machine and every type of material- it will jam if you put it too close to the edge. And buttonholes are everyone's bane.

Have you watched any Sailright videos? They make outdoor stuff like wheel covers and cushions for boats and stuff. Another poster on here was pointing out how all their videos make everything look so easy. Here is the one I used to learn how to make version #1 of that triangle bag on the last page. My first version was round.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i72IbLOJcwo

flyboy: There is a company called Green Pepper and they have all kinds of cool plans for backpacks, gloves, boots, and active wear. Basically, stuff you'd actually want to sew, as opposed to aprons and dresses. http://www.thegreenpepper.com/

TheGrey

Green Pepper has a lot of patterns available at Joanns.

I haven't watched at Sailright videos, no. We haven't got a lot of outdoor stuff that needs covers and things. Unlike your job, which has you outside all the time!

There are a lot of sewing groups on FB that have great tips and tricks.

Check out these reviews of the VOLCANO BRASS BAG from some local heros!

"When I fumble through my yearly quals, this sharp looking bag will be one of my few redeeming qualities." -- Thornton Police Officer

"The color reminds me of the warehouse fire of '82. I can still hear the screams." -- Thornton Fireman

"As per your inquiry, there is no data to show that the startling color of your bag will save the lives of children crossing the street. Also, your "bag stand" can be erected no nearer than 24 inches from the back edge of the sidewalk." -- Thornton Code Enforcer

"I bet I could fit a squirrel in there. Maybe a squirrel and a half." -- Thornton Animal Control Officer

"That bag would look wonderful on top of one of our Tahoe Bar Coffee Tables, on sale right now for only $248." -- Thornton Hero Jake Jabs

"Looks like your a bit short on postage for your bag. I think a $0.34 postcard stamp ought to do it." -- Thornton Postman

"Cool purse bro, you got any change? I'm trying to catch a bus to Boulder." -- Guy standing outside of the King Soopers on E 104th Ave and Washington St

"SCREEEEEEECH!" -- Local Bald Eagle

If ammo stays clean and dry how long can it be stored, and still be usable? Indefinitely?
