Okay, not EVERY car looks silly with EVERY ladder...something to think about. Talk amongst yourselves...but we've seen the pictures, just sayin'.

It's unfortunate that something as silly as cosmetics affect such personal decisions. ...now this is starting to sound like gun laws.
I'd like to rock a nice square bodied wagon as the roof is long enough to hold onto a big ladder with ease. Most roof racks are 4' front to back, so with a 32' extension ladder, you've got 6 feet hanging off of either end if you center the ladder. However, with most SUVs, the rack is toward the back so you run the ladder forward a bit and have 5' hanging off the back and 7' off the front. It doesn't feel all that great on a cheapy factory roof rack. I've seen some pretty heavy duty basket style racks that would work much better. Oh, I managed to squeak out 18.93 mpg today on 99% highway mileage. I think I could do better if I stayed at 65 mph and behind a semi truck the whole time, but I don't always have time for that. Today was a stupid day though, with going to Monument, then to Brighton, then back down to downtown Colorado Springs, then back home.

ouch. That's a lot of driving for one day.
That just means more time to listen to new music on YouTube. I feel like I'm in high school again and just discovered Metallica. Next will be more financial pod casts. Still packing lunch every day and while the $20 a day in gas hurts a bit, I know that many people spend at least that much eating out every day, on top of what it costs them to drive around. Talk about a double ouch!

Don't be silly. Banning the shoulder ladders that go up things from cars is perfectly reasonable. It's for the childrens!!!1!!!111!!
But on the serious side that rule is dumb. All you need is a clean car with a safe attachment point. Bonus points if you can attach magnetic company logo signs to the door.
Irv,
How does the total cost of ownership on gas vs diesel pencil out nowdays? 30mpg with diesel more expensive than gas, equals 25mpg on a gas car? (Numbers pulled from pluckin region) Don't forget to pencil in the extra cost of oil changes on a diesel vs gas, you will be doing a lot of them.
I was wondering that myself just now. The next option is a Honda Element with 24 mpg and similar prices with less maintenance. Same issue with roof rack, but more (and newer) models from which to choose, as well as better interior and easier to find fuel. Not to mention that while I plan on doing most maintenance myself, it is a lot easier to find a good Honda mechanic than a common rail diesel mechanic.
Liberty can double as a true off-road vehicle and can take things like larger tires or light towing (which I don't generally do) with less of a hit in gas mileage.

You're getting sidetracked. FOCUS on a work & possibly family specific unit. The element is a nice idea. You also need to look at RESALE VALUE. Will the liberty hold value @ 150K like the Element will?
I know once you start dicking around with Larger Tires, off road this & that. To another driver with visions of off road heaven in his head, yes it may hold value. To the average driver, not at all.
A LIBERTY FER CHRISS SAKES [facepalm]One cramped SUV trying to pass itself off as a Real OFF Road unit
You want resale value, with all wheel drive goodness - 19-23mph (in town) buy a sienna. I have one, full time AWD, roof rack, power seats, windows, fold down here, slide there.
It's the same drive train and tow capacity as the taco. BUT with sleeper AND covered storage all in one unit.
You're a hoe.
Ah yea Ho's everywhere
With the possibility of putting 50k on a vehicle in a year, coupled with the fact that I've never gotten rid of a working vehicle in my life, resale is a lower priority to me than for most other people. Besides that, I completely agree.
The Sienna is the minivan right? I may consider those as well. I have zero image issues.

Yeah, whatever you buy, you need to assume that the value is almost immediately gone with the number of miles you'll be putting on it.
Sienna is the minivan. Really fun to drive, quick V6 for a mini. The newer 4wd have run flats, costly pain in the arse.

Mine is AWD with run flats. I want to drop a few gas cans and spare tire on the roof rack, cover it in mud and drive it. Really fuk with people , slap a FEEL THE BERN sticker in the window. Keep it the only clean area, besides the windshield on the van.
I tell people i drive a Taco with custom Cab Over. They get all stupid when i tell them toyota calls it a Sienna. Derpiness ensues.

One trick to long hours it trying to get 15-20 minutes rest periods. Even if you don't close your eyes. Having the ability to just stop everything for 15 minutes makes a difference.
There was this show "Eco Challenge" ?? some years ago. It's one of those go from here - here in X time
1 year a Ranger team entered. They figured "their endurance and experience" would put them on top. Not so lucky. Seems their "idea" was to burn 24/7 till they completed the course.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eco-Challenge
After the race their spokesperson said. In hindsight, they should have taken short 15-20 min rest intervals like everyone else was doing. Instead they ran out of steam day 2ish.
It's interesting they "thought" since they were military trained. Their experience in all sorts of environments would smoke the competitors. Turns out Team (whatever) made up of some researchers who DID REST walked away, while team Ranger was falling by the wayside.
I practice short rest periods 24/7. it's the only way to get by.

I can't sleep. I think it might be the coffee I had around 6pm. I've had a great run of going to sleep on time and actually getting up early. I can never sustain that cycle though because getting proper sleep gives me so much energy that I can only go a few days before all the energy stacks and I stay up too late and ruin everything.

Fell asleep listening to it last night. Had to re-listen this morning.
Take aways:
-Happiness is like a cat. It will never come when you call it. The only way to get it to come is to make your lap an inviting place. (I don't like cats, but I grew up with them, so I know how true the cat part of this statement is.)
-Financial independence is NOT the end goal. Financial independence is just an enabler for the end goals. (This isn't super profound, but it hit me harder his time. I'd heard it before but maybe I just needed to hear it again. I need to do a better job of staying focused on the REAL goals.)
I'd be curious to hear Todd's thoughts on "anything but passive" investing right now... The show was recorded in November, before the recent drop and stagnation and he was talking about how aggressively everyone should invest. Irony, bad timing, or just a market change that wasn't particularly noteworthy?
And, a few more books to put into my Amazon cart... Which now has 47 books in it on a variety of topics that I cannot afford to buy right now, and don't have time to read anyway. [facepalm]

Read a facebook post saying "I'd rather a thousand lazy bums live off my tax dollars than one family go hungry".
Problem: "Your 'tax dollars'" might let one or two lazy bums live off them, if you happened to be willing. You don't get to go in to the bar and order a round for everyone with one $20 in your pocket and claim you're paying for it with your taxes...

I need more hours in the day. I seriously want to shoot more this year but already I see signs of many weekends tied up with chores. The reloading is not getting done, the gear is not being updated, no time to practice. Other hobbies not being tackled at all. Need to seriously optimize my life, somehow.
And this nonsense of arbitrarily changing time needs to stop. Can we just pick one setup and be done. Pick DST for all I care and be done. Grrr.

Tackle 1 chore per day after work as time allows. With an extra 1 - 1.5 hrs of sunlight it may be easier.
