One more thing, and I swear I won't talk about shocks for at least a couple of months... I do want to move the rear upper mounts In, so that I can move the lower mounts Out as far as they can go.

Gnight Ho bags.
What's that 'mazin doin up at this ridiculous hour?
Messing around in the garage trying to sort 30 years worth of rc nuts and bolts out
No it's not. Just hard for some to justify reloading (from scratch) when you ca buy ammo for under $250 per thousand, delivered.
However, IMO, those who are comfortable buying ammo, vs reloading. Might be in for a surprise as 11/2020 nears. If a R doesn't keep the WH. Ammo will be back $ $500 per 1 k pricing and reloading components will be a matter of knowing your local reloading store.
Thats why I'm reloading, they will go after ammo hard next, welcome to CA bgc for your monthy 50rnd allotment
Gnight Ho bags.
I got up about 15 minutes after your sign off. I was busy working so no COAR for me until now.
Any Ho's need any 2 stroke rc motors? I have 18 that needs new homes. Ranging in size from .15 to 65. Most are OS max, supertigre and a few European's thrown in for good measure.

OBC (OBH?) Heck of a job. That will be a show winner. It's great that you are doing a show work truck. Way too many street rod or too nice to offroad trucks out there.
Reloading: the time commitment is tough. I dont shoot comp anymore so volume is low, again time. Maybe in 2 years when 2 of the kiddos leave the house, as long as the Dem-bags don't foul it up. Also I really just shoot 9, 38 and 223 in volume. For now 223 and 9 are cheaper to buy than reload. And 30 carbine was honestly cheaper to buy than to set up for reloading. The other calibers I can single stage on the equipment I have.
I think automation and volume caught up with ammo, and the prices are too good to beat right now.
But if I can find a nice setup for 38 and 223 for a great price, I would probably do it.

That's a good point.
I can still load .223 cheaper than I can buy decent quality brass cased ammo, but I haven't shot .223 in probably 6 months. Shooting bigger rifle, and especially precision rifle, reloading still wins hands down.
Truck looks good.
Someone shot a bear where I was hunting on Friday?
Have you guys seen the Pork Sword bolt action pistol? Out of a 10" barrel, they are saying that .308 is still supersonic at 900 yards. They only have .308 and .300 blk right now. Sounds super light and compact for hunting though. Thoughts?
I'm about to switch from .308 to 6.5 Creedmore. Going to sell my Axis with scope (or two), left over ammo, dies, and brass, so I can move into a Savage 10/110 precision. Sure I won't get much traction on the Axis, but oh well.

I definitely chuckled at that bit of marketing about how shorter, more stiff barrels can be more accurate. Solution looking for a problem sounds about right.

They're probably limiting your opioid intake too right? MF'ers.
My wife is an OB nurse and she complains about this every day with patients now suffering more post op because of the overreaction to the opioid crisis.
ChickNorris
09-24-2019, 18:20
Are you waiting for or just had surgery?
Believe it or not sipping cold milk helps a tiny bit when you have an exposed nerve.
I wanted to limit the opioids. Last time I only took one and it was all I needed to deal with the root canal. Also, last time the numbing lasted until I pulled into the Walgreens parking lot about a mile from my house. This time the pain started as I was leaving the parking lot and I had to navigate rush hour traffic for what felt like an hour, just trying not to lose my shit the whole time. I got reckless and popped whatever the pain med was (picked them up before the surgery) and it's been at least an hour and it's not nearly as comfortable as last time. Last time was a breeze. I'm going to have my wife look up if I can take more meds. This isn't going well.
I was literally trying not to laugh during the surgery. It was that comfortable. I almost wish it were worse so I could have better anticipated how much this would hurt. At least it wasn't unreasonably expensive (compared to just pulling the tooth and getting a fake one put in).
ChickNorris
09-24-2019, 18:31
If youre still having this level of pain AFTER the surgery I'd have concern.
The nerve is supposed be gone so there shouldn't be that kind of pain, period.
Well, they cut open the side of my gum to access that way. It feels consistent with having my face cut open and my mouth pulled apart for about 30 minutes.

Many a decade ago the remedy for tooth aches and other dental issues, was to rub whiskey around the irritated area.
Just saying.
Yep 30 hours. Perfect work day.
There was a day when I worked 3 doubles back-to-back (16 hours on, 8 off, for 3 days straight) which gave me 8 hours of OT every week. I would catch up on sleep on day 4 and then worked the next 3 days out of my apartment doing desktop publishing. I also used to be able to work for 48 hours straight without sleep, but now I'm too old for that shit.
Man, a mostly liquid diet and none of it alcohol. :(
When I had my wisdom teeth removed I had dry sockets. If I had food in there they would ache something fierce. Rinsing the food out with warm salty water worked wonders.
Hope you can get some relief and some sleep tonight!
Thanks, I think I'll be able to sleep. Face is starting to swell though.
He must have really done a good job on the root canal last time, because I took a single Vicodin after the surgery and everything felt fine after that. This is a different deal. I got enough meds that it's way more tolerable and I'm not ready to go off on the smallest thing. Feeling much better now. Thanks for the well wishes so far everyone. Between trying not to laugh during the surgery (I had a funny thought), I was just thanking God that I didn't have to go through this in 1820 or something.

You have bad visions of someone standing on a stool, yanking a few teeth with a nail puller?
The only thing done differently in 2019 is. Cleaner offices, pain numbing injections and the tools are sterilized.
Todays advancements are interesting. They snap an x-ray and see it immediately. Back in the 60's and 70's they take an x-ray and it would be another 10-15 mins in the chair while they developed the film. Weighted down by who knows how many pounds of a lead apron.
Either way a root canal is no fun, or is have a few teeth pulled.
Good point. Dental tech has come a long way in my lifetime. Instant X-rays with a sensor and a laptop. Digital images of cavities and work performed. High-tech polymer fillings that don't require significant tooth drilling for mechanical bonds and mercury amalgam fillings. Those amalgam fillings eventually led to cracking teeth and more issues.
My wife had a similar procedure to the fun Irving went through. Had multiple root canals on the same upper tooth that would continue to get infected. She had an unusual root that they were unable to access from the crown and had to go in from the bottom/gums. Not fun.

Tack the ends, weld down sides. Don't try to go around ends. Small parts/edges heat up faster. Work both parts same time, alternate passes.
Am not a trained welder, just my own observations over the years.
Definitely seems like trying to weld around the corners was unnecessary.

I would have clamped the 2 pcs, tack welded all 4 sides, then welded. Why are you not using a drill to knock that hole out?
I don't have a drill press and figured this would be faster anyway.

I don't have a drill press and figured this would be faster anyway.Possibly faster but as torn stitch indicates only done if no other choice.
Tack piece to scrap, clamp to bench and drill with cordless on low speed with couple drops of cutting oil. Center punch, drill 1/8, 3/16, 1/4. Bang, done 10 mins and no hernia from hand press.

Irving, you need to get your family out of city.
Land, critters, shop...
I tried to buy that press that Kevin was selling but I couldn't respond in time because I was hunting and breaking my phone in the mountains. My neighbor has a drill press, but I didn't want to go over there.
I'd like to be able to use that 12 ton press that I bought from Jim to punch holes as well. Seems way easier. I held onto that punch at the request of my neighbor who regularly messes with leaf springs, which apparently just burn up drill bits.

Can stack and tack both pieces and drill both same time.
Also get a bench grinder. Any welding shop needs vice/vices, drill press, bench grinder. Or the ability to improvise accurately.
Back bevel edge of pieces where they will be welded. Good spatial reference when running bead, crutch for me to keep moving.
buffalobo
09-26-2019, 00:15
Pieces the size you were welding back bevel 1/16 when cleaning up from cutting. I like to space 1/32 when tacking, allows to knock to square/plumb.
I did bevel the edges, with a bench grinder, just no photos. Usually I would have tacked both sides as well, but I just welded one side at a time since it was only an inch of travel.
I understand, and agree with the idea of tacking all corners and jumping back and forth between pieces to control temp though.
Before when I was welding on 110, it seemed like I could barely weld a piece that thick. Now on 220, I'm finding that blowing through the edges is no problem.
I'll probably end up drilling those holes out bigger as well, since the idea was to run a piece of rebar through to hold it up. They are too small 7/16" as is.

Do you mean elevate the piece 1/32 up above the plate and then tack? Would you do that with the magnet holding it? That's interesting as it would allow even more space for the filler metal to flow.
It's time for new tires, and a new windshield, for the van. Going to get snow tires, then regulars in the spring.
Also, I'm planning on getting a part time, night job this winter until work picks back up in spring.

Magnet or thin narrow metal shim. Metal banding and/or shim stock.
Exactly.

After a particular east Indian scammer called my work # three times in a row "Sir, Why did you hang up on me?" I decided to screw with him.
After dragging him on for a very long time, he started getting pissed off, and kept repeating himself "Sir, are you dumb? What is wrong with you? Sir, what are you trying to do here?" getting more an more angry each time.
PS, he never got to do any spiel. Mostly I was acting like a heavily retarded (PC police), visually impaired elderly man that went straight to the credit card.

Yes, I agree. If you don't go right away, if you see ANY discoloration around the wounds, get to the doctor or ER ASAP. My wife was attacked by one of our cats when she tried to pull it out from under the couch, we don't know why and she ended up with blood poising. Scary stuff.
Do not fuck around with cat bites. Everyone thinks they'll be okay, but they won't. That's how people get amputations.
Oh yeah, be prepared for them to care more about getting a hold of your cat for quarantine than actually treating your literally life threatening injuries. We had to lie and say a stray attacked my wife.
Sorry to hear your cat lost it last night, CN. Sometimes they can just 'go off'. Witching Hour x 10.

He's forgiven. Though last night when I looked like a frenzied axe murderer in a B horror film who had just slaughtered a house full of cheeky teenagers & the idiot chaperone . . I did threaten to peel him & make a very fine Russian hat. A joke of course, but even for face wounds there was a surprising amount of blood that set the mood. I found much more to police this morning too, even a bit of cast off on the ceiling. Funny.
Just strange it even happened.

Been looking forward to sporting clays & the challenge of it, so there's that. See how that goes.

Ive had very little practice at shooting a shotgun in any situation & today was the first time out with this particular Beretta. If y'all didn't know I had only used a shotgun for clays once before & that was only for an hour or so of trap back in late spring/early summer. While my instruction that day was very thorough & I did very well for my first time I honestly had nearly/completely forgotten what a sight picture even was before doing this again today . . . Still, I think I did pretty well. Yay.
Very windy today which I was told added to the difficulty. Windy enough they didn't want to keep the course open & I guess it's designed to be a more morning friendly course due to the natural lighting (again so I was told @ the office).
So, I hit some clays @ all but 2 stations where I just couldn't find the sight picture in only those three attempts. One was rather far out @ 60yds & pretty high up & the other was in an elevated stand so the clays were crossing below me. I figured out what my lead & drop should be on the latter a little too late though, next time I believe I'll do better. On the flip side I hit them all at one station, 4+ @ a few other stations & at least one of each @ the remaining so all in all it was a good experience. Also. I'm not surprised that I didn't miss a rabbit. ;-)
Unfortunately we couldn't shoot the entire course before it was time to pack up but on the bright side I have a few new to me stations to try when I go next time. Soon would be my preference as I really enjoyed the outing.
Thank you WhiteWalrus for the invitation! ;-)

Is it a male cat?
Our last male cat got his peehole plugged up with crystals and went apeshit on some curtains, etc. while we were gone (pain). Apparently this is a thing if you feed male cats dry food.

Did you manage 8 days as you'd hoped?
Yep. My wife and I actually did one of the cruises. We got to go to Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Glacier Bay National Park, and Victoria,Canada. Also spent a day and a half in Seattle before heading home.
Oh, it's coming: Montana snow: Up to 4 feet of snow falls a week after summer's end (https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/montana-snow-up-to-4-feet-of-snow-falls-a-week-after-summers-end/ar-AAI427B)

Too cold, when it's cold and the blowing snow really can limit ones travel plans. Out here it snows and gone by end of day, or a day later.
Sounds like somewhere in between Wyoming and Arizona would be a good compromise.

I have driven tens upon tens of thousands of screws over my life and can still slip a screw and slam the driver thru a fingernail to create my all time greatest pet peeve, the pain and anger created by the fact that an instant before the incident happened, I realized it was going to happen and couldn't stop it.

Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16x44. FFP with Mildot reticle and adjustments. Today I was shooting Tula steel case 150 gr because I have some 150 gr hunting loads. The cases were sticking pretty bad and one is currently stuck in the chamber right now. I actually like my 165 gr hunting load better, but I was trying to shoot with what I had on hand without spending any more money. I've got several more boxes of the steel Tula stuff, but I don't know if I want to use it anymore.

Well, this complicates things. This was the 150 grain. I've shot some 165 gr Tula that didn't give me this problem and still have one box. Not really a sighting issue. More that I have so little time behind a rifle, that I can't tell the difference between needing an adjustment on my scope, or if I'm shooting poorly.
Today I was on paper, centered, at 50 yards, but 6" high. I didn't touch the scope, took a shot at 200 yards, and got nothing on paper. I moved back to 100 yards and was on paper, but the impacts were way left. Now, I can throw a shot, but the strong, steady wind, was also coming from the left, so if anything the shots should have been to the right. I move the windage turret 10 clicks to the right, took another shot that was way right, and that's when the case got stuck. So I went home. I had other stuff to do, so today was hastily planned and I felt ill prepared. I'm sure everything will be fine, I just wish I had more time. I'd like to zero at 200 and know where things are hitting from 50-400 yards.
I'm sure it's all very basic stuff, it's just stuff I've never taken the time to learn, and have very little time to accomplish before I need it (this weekend).

If you know the ballistics, you can zero at 200 and be damn close to the supplied result at any other range assuming you're not reaching past a humane kill distance.
Hell, Strelok Pro will show your reticle and the hold for any distance on your phone for different animals. Or perhaps you have a range finder that can show some ballistic data? My trusty Leupold is about dead on for .308 and mil hold.
The wind hold is where the real work comes in, but a ballistics app can help there too.
I decided to quit being a moron and actually input useful info into an online calculator to give me a decent baseline.
I think I'll go to a 100 yard zero because I can see the hits at that distance and looking at the wizbang ballistics chart, even shooting out to 550 is only 3.52 mils hold over, which is no big deal with this scope (https://vortexoptics.com/media/wysiwyg/sub_dbk-tactical_4-16x44ffp_ebr-2c_mrad-t.jpg). Everything will be fine, I just need to stop being a lazy POS and whining.

Zero it at 200 and here's your ballistics (close enough without a chrono).

If we need more detail, subtract 40-50fps per inch of barrel under 24" (unless you run suppressed) and we can swizzle it through Strelok or any other ballistics app to get you some good numbers.
Well there you go.
In the time it took me to assemble my last post, you found some useful stuff.
Getting things right in your mind and not stressing about your readiness helps.
Of course, a busted gun doesn't help alleviate any stress.
The long term plan is to sell the .308 with a bunch of extras to get into a 6.5 Creedmor with very little extra cash on my end, but that is a next year thing. TL;DR the Axis has too thin of a barrel to thread, so I might as well get an already threaded barrel rifle in a caliber that I'm interested in. For now, .308.
I went out Sunday and even in the wind was pretty happy with my initial groups.
Then something went horribly wrong. POI was 6" off vertically previous groups at 100 yds (200 yd zero). WTF?
Ended up being the damn AAC can had loosened and backed off one tooth. Hard to believe it affected the POI that friggin much but tightening it put it back on track. Frustrating to say the least.
Wind was mostly at my back at about 170* I'd estimate but got continually stronger and quartering as time rolled on. I made a one click windage adjustment from last year and called it good.

Well, earlier I complained about a pain in my lower back and hip/leg. Pain was becoming unbearable so I went to urgent care to at least get a little relief from the pain and they obliged after taking some x-rays. The x-rays showed up some wear and tear at both femur to hip sockets, they recommended that I contact a orthopedic doctor for further advice and treatment options.
I called the office that they recommended and they are not taking new medicaid patients until December? I am going to a general practitioner tomorrow for an exam and hopefully some help with the pain.
Can any of you recommend a NOCO orthopedic doctor? I would like to explore my treatment options. At 64 I am too young to stop living.

Still waffling on 6.5CM. I like the cartridge but budget may interfere. Would have to exit 308 completely and replace with 6.5. Not sure I want to do that for mid range rifle. May just stick to 308 for hunting and midrange distance.
Next planned acquisition was going to be long range rifle next year in 338 or 50 cal.
I have a .308 bolt gun for compatibility with NATO 7.62x51. It's an unimpressive Howa Lightning that I bought used, but it's accurate and shoots well. I'm not much into hunting.
I'm hoping to be able to get into long-range shooting at some point and 338 Lapua is in the lead.

Lots of options in 338.
Strelok has a free version, it's what I use.
Armscor is $19 a box at Murdochs.
Strelok Pro (not +) lets you save unlimited rifles and has more reticles, etc.
I can't see how much as I already own it, but it was maybe $7.99 at the time?
ETA: Looks like it's $12 now?
Pro has WAY more stuff in it, reticles, bullets, cartridges, ballistics options and the dev really keeps it updated with new reticles and factory loads.

If you want to shoot more, may want to look at something other than a 338. Even reloading the ammo is more expensive than a 260/6.5.

I doubt it would be high volume for me and my BiL shoots and reloads 338.
Starting to weld up my shooting tree tonight but I ran into a little snag.
I keep forgetting that just because I've had one or two decent welds, that I really have no idea what I'm doing, so when I run into a problem, I'm really not educated enough to know what the problem is!

What snag? Pic?
In this case, wire feeding, everything glowing, but no "sizzle" at all. No pictures, I already grinded that weld down. I was mostly messing around fixing other stuff, then when I went to do a real weld on a butt joint, I wasn't happy with it. It quickly became clear that I need to take my time and just impromptu welding is not a stage I'm at yet.
ETA: The pieces were prepped, but I just decided to weld them together in that moment. Was welding two 90's edge to edge, and they didn't weld straight. Fortunately this is not something that matters much, but I'd really prefer to do things correct, and well, whenever possible.
On that note, I do think we should start a DIY welding thread for people (me) to post up welds and have everyone else critique them. Probably challenging with photos though since I assume that multiple issues can cause similar looking welds.

Irving, why dont you just get a 6.5cm barrel for your axis?
buffalobo
10-01-2019, 22:52
You can always mock up with scrap or run practice bead first.
Are you tacking the pieces first?
You can tack pieces to table to hold as well. Just grind tack and dress as needed when done.
No sizzle sounds like gas issue.
Savage won't sell barrels separately. Rob at Bowers tells me that there are plenty of aftermarket barrels available. Do you have to get a new bolt for 6.5 when moving from .308? I hear the mags are the same.
I could, but I figure I can sell everything I have that goes with my Axis, and roll into that tactical for not much more. I like the 10/110 tactical since it has the Accu-trigger, ACIS mags, and factory threaded barrel. I fantasize about trying some long range match in the future and might as well upgrade everything all at once since it won't cost much more. If I wait long enough to change that I'm working again I might just keep the Axis, except for I don't have room for it.

I've already started some bad habits of not tacking stuff, or just one track and then start welding. I've gotten away with it before, but after welding this piece that moved on me, I've learned a lesson to keep that in check in the future. Also reinforced that I need a table so I'm not holding stuff together with my hands on my driveway.

What's wrong with saw horses and plywood for temp bench? Block project up with tube or 2x4's and weld between them if needed. Little scorched plywood, meh.
I weld on a laminate bench most of the time for small repairs. For small fab projects I have several cast iron table saw table extensions that I throw on lam bench so I can tack parts/jigs for fitting/welding.
I've done the saw horses with plywood and some 1/8" steel plate over the wood. That's probably the way I'll go when I want to serious weld on a project. I thought I'd hurry and throw together the duelling tree tonight but quickly realized that to do it right would have taken more time than I had, and that I had more important things to finish. I did put together what was a neat way to hang my plate, but found out the difference between the idea in my head and the physical application. Still works though. I'll try to remember to get pics tomorrow.
One thing I'd like to figure out is how to weld round stock to flat stock without completely burning up (melting) the round stock. By round stock I mean something like 1/4" metal dowell. When I was tacking up the yard art project for my wife I did okay turning the settings down to the next thinner setting, but that was for tacking two rounds together.

I love my FJ Cruiser, but after the past year, I?m thinking I need to get a Jeep XJ to beat the shit out of and never repair.
I might sell my 88 xj, with 143K on it.

As to tacking, it is integral part of the craft of fab and welding. Take time fitting and tacking. The better the rough in the better the finish.

Same bolt and same magazine if you do a detachable one. Only difference is the barrel, i built my last one off a 700 short action and bolt. Painted the mags and stock FDE, to color code the rifle and mags to see difference between the 2 calibers.
NSS for a remage / savage quick change bbl.

Not sure why you wouldn't follow this path? You have everything BUT a 6.5 barrel at your disposal. Utilize what you have and you'll be in to a new caliber. Less reloading items for under $500 including optics and stock.

Take it from someone, if not a few others here who took the long way around to get back to the starting point. Only for a lot more money than you will spend if you go that route.

well not a lot more since i do my own work, But when i set my mind to a project, i go for it.
I want a different gun. Is that a good enough reason?
What if I got a new 6.5 gun, and got an aftermarket .308 barrel for the new gun? Would that blow everyone's mind?
Also, for $400+ for a new barrel, I'm more than half way to the 10/110 tactical anyway.

Isn't it always. Hey it's your money go for it. Then we'll see how things progress down the road. As in what you'll be selling around christmas.

Sounds nice. Do they have one that takes AICS mags?

He was on COAR15 last night.
I think I'm dialed in. Pictures later.
Pretty happy with these two shots on the plate at 400 yards. These were the only two I took. I missed a whole bunch of times at this distance in a different situation, but when I could shoot correctly, this is what the rifle did, based off a 100 yard zero and a print out from that data sheet I posted.

That looks great, and an easy way to hang steel, compared to some I have seen. It borrows from the paperclip? (or the mousetrap?)

In reality, it looks better than it works. Turns out that thickness of steel is slightly more cumbersome to bend than a flag pin. Oh well, like I said, it held up.

Safety Pin, it reminds me of a safety pin. The rigidity and the toughness of the steel plate are due to the welded on circles. The ease of mounting is due to the safety pin design.
The bent corner, is a lucky shot, probably due to Dog. ;)

A safety pin is what popped into my head when I thought of the idea.
