Then, tried cooking it in a frying pan as I didn't want to go get more propane tonight, ended up drying it out, tossed it away. [Bang]

My bench will be 61" wide, 31" deep and I think I chose something like 42" tall. I had limited space to work with for where the bench will be going, and if I recall, the height would allow me to sit on a stool or stand and reload or work on guns. Although now that I write that down, 42" seems a little low... Guess its time to measure again.

BuffCyclist
06-03-2013, 22:48
My bench is 4x4 for legs, then a 2x4 brace all around the base of the legs, at 8" off the ground. Putting a layer of plywood on top of that to use as a shelf, and I might but a cross brace (at the middle point of the table) for support.

Top edge braces will be 2x4s, topped with either plywood or a blank slab door (1.5" thick for excellent stability). Still haven't decided if I will put my press on a strongmount of sorts to raise it higher and that could allow me to have the entire press/mount system bolt on/off the table for when I need a huge workbench.

I was thinking about just using 2x4s for legs with a bottom shelf of 3/4" plywood, and a top surface of 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood glued and screwed for awesome sturdiness. I helped my dad build a bench like that when I was a kid and he mounted several tools to it including a riveting press, grinders, a drill press, and several bench vices. Everything was rock solid and the surface was perfectly smooth and level.

Sucks about the cough, you should threaten to kick MrsBadger out to the guest bedroom unless she stops coughing. [LOL]

I keed, I keed.

Sounds like a good bench, two layers of 3/4" plywood sounds just as sturdy as a slab door, probably cheaper too if you can get both out of one sheet of plywood. I don't know much about woodworking, in all honesty, I'll be surprised if whatever bench I ends up sitting level.

Next time you need to cut 2x4 or even up to 2x10, use a speed square($6-$15 @ Lowes, lots of uses, money well spent) as a guide, flange against side of board, adjacent edge as guide.

When you get ready to put up crown, post up on the forum, lots tips/tricks for your soon to be new miter saw. No crappy expensive, useless jigs needed.

Yes, definitely worth the money... and it will last you forever. I got one in high school when I worked construction and I've been using it for various projects ever since.

Honestly, I'm surprised you placed an order with PSA. I will never again do business with them, no matter how good of a deal they are running. Heck, they could be giving away $5 AR's with free shipping and 10k rounds of ammo included for all I care and I wouldn't buy from them.

Yeah, I've always had good experiences with PSA. I've spent several thousand dollars on their stuff and don't have any complaints. Last December in the middle of the hype, I ordered a 3 LPKs from them and they sent me 4 by accident. I called and they just told me to keep the extra. When the QD bipod mount I ordered last year was out of stock and it didn't look like it was going to ever come in, they just sent me a different one - a nicer one that cost about 3x as much.

I've ordered 5 stripped lowers from them and they were all top notch quality and fit very tightly with every upper I own.

I know some people have had really crappy experiences, but it always seemed like they went out of their way to make things right for me. I always ordered with the understanding that it would probably take 2-3 weeks to ship, so it wasn't ever a surprise.

They shorted me an LPK on one shipment and sent another right out no questions asked. Never had any issues with them. I did have a lower that was very difficult to fit to their uppers. Any other upper was fine and their uppers would fit any other lower fine. Weird. Just enough on opposite sides of the spec to be a pain.

They shorted me a Geissele trigger and acted like they shipped it, as there were no notes on my account that they didn't ship it. Took them nearly 2 months if I recall to get it to me, calling weekly because they kept telling me it was in-stock and would ship that day (so I'd call a week later when I didn't have it to get a tracking number, they'd say it never shipped but it was in-stock and they'd send it out that day).

Anyways, there's a huge thread on PSA and this is not it. So before a mod merges these, shall we get this whore of a thread back on track?!

Its a ploy by PSA. They pick one out of a thousand customers and ship their order the same day. That way, they know the person will go online and rave about PSA's fast shipping.

Granted, if you ordered more than one item, there's always a chance everything you ordered isn't in the box [Flower]

You sure it was chicken? A common chinese restaurant tactic is to have breaded "dense bread" that is flavored like chicken. When you bite into it, it tastes like chicken, then you see the air bubbles

Two winters ago, the gas company decided to shut off the gas to half of the city here. They did it when it was snowing (in the desert, which never happens) and in the teens. My future sister-in-law's house lost gas so they went to her parents house (who had gas), because having a 1.5yo kid in a house with no heat isn't good.

Yes, all wood is ruined when it gets wet.

Ive got it laid out on the garage floor with cinder blocks on top to keep it straight. I was planning on just keeping the nice side of the plywood up as the work surface.

Hey HoneyBadger, you forced my hand.

Went to lowes and bought the lumber for my reloading bench this morning. Couldn't decide on what type of top I wanted, so I just got the 4x4s and 2x4s and hardware to screw it all together. Options were cheap 3/4" plywood, 3/4" "blondewood" plywood (tropical hardwood that grows fast ie renewable resource) or actual hardwood planks, though the planks would have a seam running down the middle of the bench.

The blondewood splinters easily, the plywood would need to be lacquered or something so I could have a nice smooth surface on top and the hardwood planks are expensive. I tried looking for a slab door but couldn't find any so I decided I'd just get the top later. Supposedly my Lowes carries a slab door for $52, which I originally planned on getting, but none of the employees could find them in the store.

This is what I was going to get: http://www.lowes.com/pd_10804-42734-10804_0__?productId=3351926&Ntt=slab+door#BVRRWidgetID

Yeah, I almost got a formica counter top for mine, but I think the 2 sheets of glued (liquid nails) and screwed plywood is stronger and sturdier.

I'm working out the design for mine right now, and if I have time I think I'll start it tonight. I can decide if I want an overhang in the front and how much... maybe 6"? Gotta be careful so that the base doesn't get too skinny.

I ended up getting a laminate countertop with backsplash, its little more expensive ($60), but it looks nicer than plywood and is more of the type of top surface I had in mind for my reloading bench. Its currently 92deg out and will get up to 96deg later today, so if I start it today, I'll be doing it later tonight. The plan was to start tomorrow morning, but I have to reinforce our roof under the evap cooler first before I start playing.

My plan was to put a length of 4x4 across the front top, that I'm hoping the press will be able to screw into and make for a really rigid mounting point. Still can't decide if I want to put the press in the middle, or around 18" from one edge. The 5ft bench will be sliding into a pocket between two walls, and I only ever operate the press with my right hand, so I'm thinking closer to the edge than the middle. I'll probably build the bench first, then toy around with positions for the press for several days. Who knows, I might even mount the press to the 1ft section of laminate that I have to cut off and then be able to move that around on the top to find the sweet spot.

I'm bolting my press on the edge. I'd rather have the entire weight of the bench (length-wise) as a counter weight, rather than just the 2 foot width.

BuffCyclist

Belly, I guess that makes sense, but in my case it doesn't work as the bench will be sliding into a U-shaped pocket with walls on 3 sides. If the bench was sitting in the middle of a room, I wouldn't care so much. We'll see how it goes, I might start cutting the wood this afternoon.

Make a separate board for mounting. Then Clamp that one to your bench. This gives you time to make changes for position, ease of use and placement of your other items being used while reloading [ brass, bullets, scale etc]
PLUS it gives you the option to move IF you decide to acquire another press. I mounted press #1, then moved for #2, THEN for the 3rd unit. NOW i have a shit load of "holes" and 4 presses[facepalm] Then again i believe in cut twice , measure once;)

Jim, so you're advocating that I take the 1ft section of laminate (or another piece of wood) and attach the press directly to that and then clamp the board to the workbench? I like that idea, but don't see how I could clamp that piece to the work bench.

I wouldn't be able to clamp it from the side or the back, so it would have to be clamped on the front of the table...which I guess I could use and clamp on a long thing board running the length of the table, but that doesn't get the torque that a clamp on the back side of the table would get.

I guess advocating was the wrong word. I am concerned about drilling into the laminate, which is why I am considering alternatives. I'll have a better idea what I've got to work with tomorrow once I cut the laminate and get the bench in its cubby hole.

Shit can the laminate. You building a suzy home maker or full tilt reloading bench? Hence C Clamping the press until you see what works best for you.
For the 3rd press i cut a small piece of wood and drilled the mount holes in it. To secure it to the wood i used 7/16 t-nuts secured on the bottom. This allowed me to bolt / mount the press using C-Clamps, with the option of removal when not in use.

Suzy homemaker is actually exactly what I was going for! Glad you noticed!!!

I actually got the idea for the solid core slab doors from the Reloading Forum. There are also several people who use the laminate counter tops, which is where I got the idea for that. My current bench is basically painted plywood, and its extremely possible to wipe off, which is why I wanted a lacquered or smooth finish on top, which the laminate is perfect for. This is not only a reloading bench, but also a general purpose work bench, that can easily be cleaned. I did think of doing something similar with those t-nuts, but in the end decided to just bolt the press directly to the laminate. I may just bolt it to some plywood for a while until I find the ideal position for it.

Oh, and HoneyBadger and I were discussing building work benches in here AND the reloading forum, we just got more views and replies in this thread, so we cluttered it up.
