We (wife, MIL/FIL, MIL sisters/father from germany) went hiking to a sanatorium Saturday, then shopping all day to close out our registries lol.
That was fun until the drive home when we started calculating how much we spent [LOL]

find someplace to write or engrave the date of purchase. Our egg beater from 1977 is still ticking, cook books still used, blender still blending. The glass portion of the blender was replaced 35 years ago when it broke during a 4 hr margarita marathon.

I assume the reasoning for this is to look back eventually when various things die and see how long we used it for and figure out the cost/year of each appliance, right? Not a bad idea actually. I do a lot of research when buying bigger ticket items though and have never had anything die prematurely or before the time that I felt where I got my moneys worth out of it. But dang, an egg beater from 1977, thats impressive!
Luckily I saved all of those mailer/spam 20% off savings flyers we get about once a week. Best thing about Bed Bath and Beyond is that they will always take those 20% off discount cards, expiration date of the coupon doesn't matter!

It was a common occurrence back then. Actually it was more like 35 yrs ago (need to recheck my math) We still have an electric ice crusher, it ran as much as the blender. The friday Kamikaze $5 pitchers along with rocks glasses of tAkillya every other night, was an ongoing thing till we moved here. Then it slowed down to just weekends, or after a 10 hr day at work,

Partially, its also helps when you "get older" and ask. How long have we had this? I still have my original tool set from 72, the box itself became a holder for misc hardware who knows how long ago...
Our Kirby is still going strong.
She never uses the damn thing.
It's fun to ask the Kirby door-door salesmen what trade value they would give us on a new Dyson.

My Dad and Step Mother are still using a Kirby unit that was new when I was like.......6 years old. Tough product.
But then again, most stuff built in the 70's and prior to that, were built to LAST. This "throw away" concept of manufacturing that has been going on for a while, is really a horseshit deal.

Been starting to work through my usual winter projects - stereo repairs.
Slow start.
Finished up a recap on a Yamaha pre-amp I started in the spring and set aside, and the noise at idle is still there. :( Must be a squiffy transistor in there somewhere in the pre-out amplifier section.
The high end vintage Yamaha amp I listen to in my office went into protection about a month back and I finally got it up on the bench. Only spent a little time with it but it looks like a power supply problem. This amp is a very complex sliding-bias hybrid class A (Yamaha dubbed it HCA), but hopefully I'll get it running again.

Thanks, Lobo.
I saw some stuff at Lowes today that was about 3/4 thick and nearly 3 inches tall for a backstop. I thought about the shelf program, and I've considered a "hutch" type program too. Only limited by creativity I figure.

Before I catch up, I thought I'd post something that just made me [facepalm]
I was reading an article on "The Top 5 You Need to Get Your Hands On Now". First, shotgun. Second, AR15. Third, .40 or .45 full size handgun. Why that caliber? Because of "stopping power".
Granted, I LOVE my .40, I'm definitely starting to see the benefits of 9mm as a SD gun.

Not the best pic, and there is clutter on the bench....I'm moving the bench to another part of the room this weekend. I like how the trim worked out, and I have an idea for a backstop that I'll get some material for tomorrow I think.

So how many rifles/guns/builds have you finished since you've been back? I see this is your 2nd? How many more are planned? lol
We're going to try out our first pistol loads tomorrow....firing line around 2:30 or 3:00 in the afternoon if anyone wants to join us.
Good luck! Wear some gloves when you shoot those first few off, just as a worst case scenario! ;)
But seriously, I wore gloves when shooting my reloads for about the first 1000rds. Then I started accepting that I'm doing it right, but still paying tons of attention to what I do.

Yes it is, and now that I'm concealing my M&P40c EVERYWHERE and all day long now (in my shiny new DOS holster), I'm wondering if 11 rounds is enough. So, I'm carrying a 15rd mag in my pocket too just because I can.

Agreed. Though I do want to pickup a .45 of some sort since I don't have one.
Also, the article mentions after the 4th being long range rifle, and 5th being .22 pistol and rifle, that you should pickup a Mosin Nagant and a .380 for concealed carry. I started laughing there because my CCW is easily converted to full size with the large magazine (granted shorter barrel, but it'll get the job done).

In other news, I am taking a concealed carry class with my wife next weekend (16th). With plans of baby makin' in the near future, she requested we get her a cell phone for emergencies. Then, she read an article about how a baby was stabbed and immediately wanted to get her CCL to protect that baby. Looking forward to taking the class with her (for moral support with no fee from the instructor) but also to retaking it as a refresher for myself. Now that my knee is operational again, its time to take some other advanced shooting classes.

Nice bench. Instead of a back shelf why not side shelves, one one each end. That window behind the bench, utilize that natural light. I would suggest rigging up some lower / closer to the presses, from above, fluorescent lights. Also include the plastic tubing that shields the bulbs. last thing you want is a broken 4" tube all over everything, including yourself.

I was rethinking my passion tonight but I fixed the amp that was wonky.
Tough bugger to track down. Usually when transistors go south, they dead short and are easy to find. This one went open on one leg and gave me a good run. Some capacitors also had excessively high ESR (resistance) so I swapped them out as well as the dead transistor. Took my all damn night to fix it but I'm outta practice. It now comes out of protection, but I'm too tired to finish adjusting and testing it tonight.

Jim, I totally get the natural sun/daylight aspect from the bench being in front of that window. I've appreciated it a few times already..... But.... the bench is kinda blocking a heat register where it is now, and the new location has a ceiling fan/light right above it. Lighting was/is a problem for me when it wasn't daytime, already...I was, and still probably am going to get a serious table light for this bench, but it can't be overhead....it has to be table mounted. Vaulted ceiling and can lights in the wrong places for my needs.
Maybe if I build side shelves like you suggested, I can run the light between them. The ceiling fan lights and can lights behind me might work too. I have to experiment a little I guess.

Awesome, I run about 22-22.1gr IMR4895 in my 223 loads (55gr FMJ) and I think that was close to the starting, though I went down to 20gr and the acuracy wasn't as good there, and as high as 24gr and it was getting worse there. Plus, lighter loads means cheaper cost per round!

Wrote out this huge long post about the new position, but I think I'll drop it down to the super short version here:
Consortium will tell my boss to hire a new observer to start Jan 1st. Consortium will write me a letter guaranteeing me a position with xx salary until 2020. I will drop to part time observing in Jan-Feb and will train the new observer, at which point I'll leave my current employer and be hired on by the consortium as a private consultant with double the new salary since it doesn't come with benefits (so I can buy my own) and just because they can. In the meantime, I will be writing the new position description/duties etc for the university that will hire me on (that owns the project).
Starting in Jan, I'll start designing hardware. It has to be in Chile by Summer 2015, so after designing it, prototyping it here and debugging everything, I'll take it down there and train the Chileans on it. At which point, I'll move to the east coast university that hired me, and spend 2 years building the new instrument. Then, I'll move it all down to Chile and spend 3-6mo living in Chile while we commission the instrument.
Then, I'll come back up to the east coast and most likely become the departments new head/lead/only mechanical engineer in the IR lab that is the only one in the country building instruments at this level (huge instruments that is, not for small, sub-4m telescopes).
If anything goes tits up, the consortium said they want to keep me no matter what and will find a new position. Having knowledge of both astronomy science and the hardware is a dying trade and therefore I am highly sought after. Which I'm finding out now since everyone is fighting over me lol.
