Well sheeit.

I want to paint the tank like a jacketed hollow point, but I found out I don't own the tank. Booo Hissss.

Started the process of changing providers, exchanging and owning the tank, and the new provider WILL fill my 20 and 40 lb bottles when they're here to do the house tank. I like being consistent working with vendors, but when you tell me you can't provide my full service because filling small bottles "hurts the pumps on our trucks", blow me....I'll find someone else.

Sources say that the cause of the accident was caused by someone who thought their time was way more valuable than yours, so now you can rest assured.

Leaving home dickheads a week and a half ago, I'm carting my shit back to the bambalance. The store exit dumps into the lot where rentals are picked up and received.

You ever been doing something not quite very well, and realize that folks are watching and waiting on you, and you start to lose your shit and stuff gets worse very quickly?

Okay, so the lot traffic is at a high level, and this poor guy is returning a rented trailer and trying to back it up into the designated spot, store attendant guiding him. I stop pushing my cart and give him plenty of room. This guy starts feeling the pressure, cars trying to drive behind him, he's turning the wheels the wrong way each time and starting to utter obscenities from his open window.... i.e. losing his shit at this point. I tried to advise him which way to turn his wheels, and I think that adds more pressure.

This goes on for over ten minutes, he says to me to go ahead but my car is right next to where he's having his meltdown. I said, don't worry about it man....it's cool and I'm in no hurry.

He finally got his shit together and is unhooking, and I'm loading stuff into my car....and he hollers over to me. Thanks for your patience, I appreciate it.

I said no problem, and have a good rest of the week.

I'll never miss those ten minutes, decent trade for being cool to a stranger having a rough moment.

Mrs. Hummer and I took a little getaway to the Glenwood Hot Springs pool to enjoy a "coming-out" evening dinner party with friends for the first time out in almost 18 months. Creative cocktails and dinner at the Riviera Supper Club was great. Yummy drinks and delicious food.

After soaking again in the hot springs this morning we toured the Doc Holliday Museum. It was fun to see our old friend "Doc" Bob Boyle in his superb character role of Doc Holliday on video loop in the museum. Doc Boyle is a knowledgeable old west historian and a great story teller. We wanted to see the museum since it opened a few years ago. There's an interesting collection of firearms and memorabilia including some of the western armaments we carried as kids in the 1950's & '60's.

The larger west end pool at Glenwood is 90 degrees, very nice and a cool off from the therapy pool at the east end which is a relaxing 104 degrees. They have a small original hot pool that's 120 degrees but nobody uses it.

Back in the years when I was touring the continent by motorcycle I sought out hot springs everywhere from the Gila Wilderness to Circle City hot springs north of Fairbanks. Always a good way to wash the dust off and meet interesting people. There were great places from Banff to backcountry springs in the Yukon. I would like to do it again but travel with a cozy camper of some kind.

The Glenwood Springs pool is the largest hot springs pool in the world. It's neat, clean, well managed and affordable. Always has been from my experience. Sometimes I visit during or after elk hunting in the FlatTops. Other times just part of the trip from east to west and back.

I meet people there from all over the world. Last time, some ladies from the Ukraine, a couple from Taiwan, and a few locals intent on keeping Glenwood from getting more populated with 550 Sq Ft tiny houses. It's a watcher's paradise. Pretty girls, of course. How can you not love it? As a birder I'm always watching the sky and the trees from the pool. On Thursday we saw an adult Bald Eagle and a great number of Turkey Vultures soaring over the pool and along the Colorado River. Most people don't even see that sort of thing. Completely oblivious, unaware. I've counted five species of swallows swooping over the pool and five species of woodpeckers in the trees on the north side by the pool. Amazing given it's proximity to the interstate.

Painting the kitchen. Single coat paint is a lie. I can never get the stated coverage. Kitchen painting is much harder than a kids room. The right tools make it much faster.
Need to go to the hardware store for the 3rd time, which means I am close to done. The dinky 6? roller is not putting down the paint right and I need to find a hollow core version that holds more paint. All this because the space above the cabinets is tiny.
And my body is telling me I need to either work out more or pay people to do this.

It seems the world is opening up to those of us who've stayed close to home over the past year. For us it's been almost 18 months since enjoying an inside restaruant meal. Even pre pandemic we didn't eat out a lot, maybe 3-4 times a month. We're frugal and we eat better and cheaper at home. We don't do fast food. Even so, I figure we've saved around $3500 or more on restaruant meals since December 8, 2019. Doesn't that justify a splurge or two?

In the past week we've hosted friends and enjoyed lovely meals at three nice restaruants. Today was Mrs. Hummer's birthday and this evening she had elk loin at the Bird and Jim restaruant in Estes Park. With three freezers full of big game meat at home and she orders elk steak? Okay, so I had a Buffalo burger, Ha! We shared a little and the elk was excellent.

Now, we're pretty well satiated on the desire to dine out, for a few weeks anyway. As far as all that savings over the past 18 months I'm afraid it will dwindle quickly as the inflation of restaruant tickets is rising far faster than income from the government covid relief payouts.

For the first time in a long time, I don’t have any guns to trade or sell.
I mean nothing I would actively try to sell anyway. I am not attached to one but I suppose that I would trade it for something else but I actually should keep it.
Huh, unusual situation for me. Guess I will just acquire the parts I need to build a 20 inch upper and assemble a lower I have hanging around.

Honestly, it has been 20 years since I have been in this position.

Yes, moose berries are easy to ID because of their perfect cylindrical shape, rounded ends and woody component. Deer and elk can often be difficult to distinguish, highly variable in size and shape depending on the moisture of vegetation they consume and the size of the animal. They can be round, cylindrical or like Hershey Kisses drops.

In the picture above the smaller, older, drier, and some eroded and lighter colered droppings on the left are from a cow calf moose in February. The larger, shiny moist ones on the right were made by an adult cow moose about eight days ago. Bull moose berries are larger yet. :p

Scatology can be fun!

The sum of the whole is less than the makeup of its parts, eh? We're looking to get a significant length of fencing replaced. The current price of lumber makes going with a synthetic not quite the sticker shock it may have been in the past.

If you're talking about that white syn stuff. Where it looks like normal fencing, unless it's decorate, don't. We have a syn fence on what we call the front yard, it keeps the pups in, when we have the main fence open. Outside looks and maintenance , it's not something i would sit, or lean on. Then again i grew up, like most of us, where a fence was just there for you to sit on.

Vinyl is okay as long as you aren't in a heavy hail area. With respect to insurance, fences are covered ACV for a full replacement (corner to corner of a run), and RCV for repairs. Wood fences are given a lifespan of only 12 years, so you can imagine that most wood fences are depreciated down to about nothing on a replacement with no replacement cost recovery possible. A vinyl fences is given a useful life of 150 years, so the depreciation on repairs is generally minimal.

Like Master James said, vinyl is purely decorative.

Do you want it for decorative, of function?

Steel pipe fencing . Which is popular down here. basically 2" oilfield type steel tubing, for uprights and top rail. With a cattle fencing type used as the actual fence.

here's a link showing the fencing, to give you an idea what it looks like. Maybe later today i'll see about getting a picture of our fence. Unfortunately no options are cheap. But some have a longer life expectancy than others. With the steel pipe, and drier conditions down here. It will probably last another 20-30 years. And the most popular fencing in use.

Yes the syn is nice and aesthetically pleasing to look at. But as a real fence, eh my dog could break thru it if they wanted to.

No moose. As for javalinas, we have dogs. Not that one wouldn't tear up the pups. That garden fence, is inside the multiple fences around the property. With 3 sides also having the rock border the spouse laid down. Plus the garden is bordered with the same rock. Not that anything will keep them out, they're determined buggers.

Ive been listening to a bird call for over an hour that I've never heard before. Its complex & really, really lovely & almost hauntingly beautiful. I wish I could see who was making it because I'm not sure I could accurately describe it & my phone isn't recording it either.

Oddly, I don't hear my resident Robin which is unusual too.

[Edit] If I were to try to reproduce it, I'm going to need a Theremin.

To learn bird songs you have to pursue the bird until you see it singing. Get it in your binoculars. Once you identify the bird you will know it's song wherever you go. In identifying them it's important to know what's in your region and habitat. Most people know more birds by sight and sound than they realize. It's fun to be able to ID birds by sound alone.

It's getting a little late for migrants so your bird is likely a local breeder. Xeno-canto (https://www.xeno-canto.org/set/6312) is a good resource for recorded bird songs.

Here's some for the Hermit Thrush, a mountain bird closely related to American Robin, and one of the most beautiful, haunting songs in North America:
Hermit Thrush (https://www.xeno-canto.org/explore?query=hermit%20thrush)

Two other birds have melodious songs very similar to robin, the Black-headed Grosbeak and the Western Tanager:
Black-headed Grosbeak (https://www.xeno-canto.org/set/6312)
Western Tanager (https://www.xeno-canto.org/species/Piranga-ludoviciana)

We have at least 3-4 hummingbird families visiting the feeders. Black chins & broadtails, who don't get along too well with each other, especially around the feeders. Quail sound off every now and then. Those fu^&*( ravens will not shut up. Getting one of the young ones to fly. Who for some reason has decided he'd rather be a pedestrian

Two-three weeks ago some were still migrating north. You might have a small population of Black-chinned in the city of Denver now but I don't have a good handle on that. Beginning around July 4-12, we'll begin seeing southbound migrant hummingbirds so that's a good time to put out more feeders and keep them fresh.

At the Palisade farm now I have 8 feeders out and am feeding mostly male Black-chinned. The females are more dispersed and staying close to their nests. Here, they have 2-3 broods.

At the cabin north of Ward we're now feeding ~1.5 gallons of sugar water a day. The next door neighbors are feeding an equal amount, so that's about 3000 hummingbirds daily. All Broad-tailed at this time.

At the peak of season (July 25-Aug 5) when the migrant Rufous and Calliope move through and the juvenile Broad-tailed show up to feeders, we feed about 10-15 gallons of sugar water daily depending on the weather. Figure about 1000 birds per gallon per day. That's about 12,000+ individual birds feeding here daily.

If Alfred Hitchcock ever knew....

Grand Junction. Been coming here for 30 years. Consistently good and affordable. (Most chinese restaurant sushi is crap, worse than grocery store sushi.)

Nice, back about 2004. Sadly after the freeloaders / dopers started their panhandling plague, in old town. We stopped going there, which sucked as there were a lot of good places to eat. But navigating the maze of people who insisted on getting too close. I felt it was better to avoid, than other options.

I had to look it up but we went there once about 4 years ago. The sushi was okay but the wait, the crowded noisy atmosphere and poor careless service made it not worth the cost. Twelve to 24 bucks for two pieces of nigiri is nuts.
