Yep that sucks. I use two levels in a vice and it can still be a little off. Third time always a charm.

Yo Bogie....
HB...how's your new reloading set up going?
Well, I've been reading the Lee reloading manual when I have time, but I'm barely into chapter 3. My parents are here for the weekend, and I don't get to see them more than a few times a year, so I'd rather spend time with them. I can read and play with the reloader later.
i did buy 1k MidwayUSA "Dogtown" 55gr fmj .223 bullets and 1k SRPs and 1K SPPs. I'm not sure where to find powder or what powder I want yet.
I also need some tumbling media to start cleaning my brass. I have thousands of .223 and 9mm cases that need cleaning before I can start with anything else.
The last, and most serious problem, is that I don't know where I want to mount my new press on my bench. I don't want to mount it in a silly or inconvenient place, only to move it later and leave holes in my bench.
Are you right or left handed? I've used a mounting stand for mine (kind of like dillon strong mount) to bring the height up.
HoneyBadger
10-27-2013, 13:44
Right handed. I have an 8ft long bench that has a wall at both ends. I don't really want it right in the middle, but I'm not sure if I want it too close to the ends either.
also, I've considered mounting it to a 12"x12" piece of plywood and then C-clamping that to my reloading bench, that way I can move it around.

Hey HB, do what jim told me: Mount the press to a plank (like a 2"x12"x2ft) and then clamp that to your bench. That way you can move it around easily if you don't like its position and then down the road when you upgrade, you aren't stuck with holes in your bench. Also, you can remove the press from the bench if you need to use the work bench for other work!
Also, Zilla Ground Walnut (lizard bedding) from Amazon. That stuff is AWESOME! Throw a little Nu Finish car polish with it in the the tumbler and you'll get super clean, super shiny brass in ~3hrs.
And, xtremebullets.com for .223 FMJ 55gr projectiles. Last I bought, they were $98/1k shipped.

I made my own clamps out of 1x's with rubber mats . Clamped it to the rail on the outers rifle rest. Looked square, but slight tilt down / right.

I understand the "moving" the press and having holes. At least my bench is wood, so I can fill the holes with dowel plugs. Of course you could weld up a hole in a steel bench too.

My back is killing me. I crouched down this morning, knees bent and everything, was not lifting anything at all and all of a sudden, without warning pain shoots across my lower back and I nearly drop to the ground. The pain is unbelievable. I took a muscle relaxer and some extra strength (500mg) aspirin and as long as I don't move it stays a dull ache. Can't walk hardly at all and the wife had to help me off the john. Laying down is worse than sitting.
Now I have an idea what me wife goes through every day with her disability. This stinks. At least I have a day before I have to go back to work.

That's a nice rifle. Mossberg is onto something here. I would even consider buying if it had the longer barrel that you want. Tell me sir, have you tried 77 grain bullets in that 1:9 bbl? Wondering if those will stabilize?
Hey HB, do what jim told me: Mount the press to a plank (like a 2"x12"x2ft) and then clamp that to your bench. I'm also right handed and need a little more space on the left side. I clamp my press down for now on this stand. I'm going to make a bracket to hold a couple plastic bins on the left side for brass and bullets. I also c-clamp the trimmer down. Clamps are fine for both and I have no tilting problems. Although for long term, I'm going to have to come up with something better.

Yes, I have heard of inversion therapy and I did a variation in that I laid on the bed and grabbed the headboard and pulled to straighten out my back and relieve the stress. I worked to some extent and I laid there for about 20 minutes. I took some more aspirin and I was comfortable for a while. Now I am back in the oversize recliner and typing while the wife gets dinner ready.
Thanks for the concern and the suggestions, I am sure that a nights rest will help a lot.

Yeah, I think I'll mount the trimmer to some 1x2 or something. The presses are mounted into the table though...and I *do* have some holes to fill...had to move them due to stress on the table top. Not really giving up on it, but it was donated, and for practical purposes, if we're going to have two presses, they should be the same. Not worth the time to switch back and forth on the settings. Just the lee press by itself is only $80. I appreciate the donated Herters, but it's not efficient for what we want to accomplish. The turret unit is nice for sure, but I also am of the belief at this point, that I can't trust a charge and deal with the mess from an automated unit yet. I'd rather load the charges by hand.

Nah, I feel you. Single stage is great man, and it's all about learning something new all the time.
I personally don't shoot enough to justify getting into progressive loading at this point. Someday I hope I can. But I'm content with the single stage at this point. Reloading to me is just as much fun as shooting.

I'm not in to the 75gr stuff. I have a plethora of 62 gr btfmj's, i'd try and some 68's. Maybe off them for some more 62's if i like the load.
Regarding the bbl length i really want the bench rest stock vs "varmint" / standard rifle style. Just not a comfortable position w/out a p/grip style stock. I'd probably sell the 24" with regular stock, HINT.

I dont remember them ever calling that "Twerking", besides I think they have to go up then down doing it? Where is an expert Twerker on the board to answer that? Is that how you would say that? If you like to Twerk your twerking, and your a thwerker, confusing.

I hate bureaucratic bullshiz!
New project wants me to submit a letter of intent to leave my current position without giving me a written offer for the new position. They say they can't do that until my supervisor starts searching for a replacement for me. My supervisor says he can't start searching for a replacement until I give him a letter of intent to leave. [facepalm]
All the while, work keeps piling up on my desk for the new position (at a ridiculous rate), but I can't work on it yet because I am not on the new projects' payroll.

I use to work for the state , it's worse than the .mil at least in service you know it's in triplicate. The state seems to feel it needs to go through your dept, up the dept ladder, then back down. 2 months later, it's too late. Especially when all you wanted was approval to relocate an item from room 101 to room 102[facepalm]

Zilch. The new project has stated multiple times over that it will only succeed with me in this position. I am the only person in the world (not exaggerating) who has seen all aspects of this instrument from installing at the mountain, to doing engineering work inside the instrument (in clean room conditions), to deploying their fiber optics train, to fully populating all 8 containers with fiber optics, to daily maintenance/debugging/feeding, to observing with the instrument.
My new position will be to create all the hardware between the telescope and the instrument, then train the chilean observers/day-staff on everything I designed in addition to daily maintenance of the instrument, then to work side by side with the instrument designer to build the instrument (assuming we get the funds, which its looking promising), then installing the new instrument at the new telescope and spending 6mo getting first light and going through commissioning.
It's just extremely frustrating! Give me a signed letter of offer for the new position and I'll happily submit my letter of resignation/intent and start working on the new project ASAP.

On the plus side, I finally got to use my new Bravo Concealment DOS holster and all I have to say is WOW! Not sure if its the location, but it truly does make the pistol disappear! At first I just tried it with a slightly small dark t-shirt and even I couldn't tell that I was carrying.
Sitting down is a little uncomfortable, but I might just need to move the holster slightly left/right on my belt. But with how comfortable and easy to conceal it is compared to my Crossbreed Supertucks (with glock 23), I'll actually enjoy carrying and won't be so worried about printing!

So, what was the outcome though? Was the rifle really shooting off due to a hardware issue, or was it just ammo? I guess I could understand Mark wanting to buy it back, but how does that do you any good if it's your only rifle (though I know it isn't) and you'd have to wait 1yr or more for a new one. He should have taken you to the assembly line and let you pick out a brand new shiny one [LOL]
