Which, historically, has a better tolerance to fine machining?

7075-T6 has a machinability rating of 80%, whereas 1215 steel has a machinability rating of 136%. Anything less than 100% is difficult to machine, so the 1215 steel is technically easier to machine in this case. However, this doesn't mean that you can't get similar precision while machining either material, it just means that with 7075, there will be more wear on your tools and you'll have to go slower.

As far as weight is concerned, the 7075 will be 1/6th the weight of 1215 steel. However this is the least of my worries as it isn't going on a backcountry lug-it-through-the-woods-for-days firearm.

Steel on Steel.

Aluminum on Aluminum.

To what end? The scope base is steel and the scope is aluminum if I researched correctly (SWFA SS 10x MRAD). This general rule of thumb only really applies to clamping strength (when referred to firearms use), as in, you wouldn't want to put steel rings on an aluminum scope base because the scope rings are harder and will deform the aluminum scope rail when tightened down.

Kinda hard to slap on of those on a bolt gun.

Steel on steel

Aluminum on aluminum.

Actually, I think by definition, the LT104 IS kinda EASY to slap on a bolt gun, but the objective will be 0.25” or higher above the barrel, which is not desirable on a precision firearm.

What ever works within your budget. I have a pile of 1" rings. Don't know if I can get more selling as rings, or scrap.. Almost time for another garage sale. Once it warms up.

TPS TSR 7075 Aluminum = $69
TPS TSR 1215 Steel = $79

They’re both in the budget.

I think if I were to get a QD system, it wouldn’t be until I get a super nice scope to share among several guns, so I'm not seriously looking at any right now.

it's the 600yd BDC. Worked like a charm out to 600. Shooting past 600 you would certainly want more magnification than 8x, but for my short to intermediate range application of a reasonably accurate gun, it works great.

Eating healthy rocks. Your body will thank you for it. like any other fuel-burning system, garbage in = garbage out.

When I slip into a habit of eating garbage, I feel like garbage. When I make it a habit of eating really healthy for a few weeks, I notice a lot of positive changes in my mood, sleep habits, and physical & mental performance.

There is also a school of thought that the rate of expansion/contraction dependent upon temperature necessitates the use of like materials when clamping rings to a base to avoid any potential for POI change. Granted the scope tube is going to be Aluminum, but should be less affected by temperature swings. Do I have any empirical evidence to support the claims? No, but I read it on the intarwebz so it must be true.

Well, I thought we'd already covered this, but I think the LT104 is an alright mount... :D

I never said it wasn't. In fact I love the QD LT-104 mount and have one on my Sig 716Patrol hosting a SWFA scope. So much so that I'm looking for another.

That said, I personally wouldn't mount one on a bolt gun. Perhaps the QD LT-158 that's a tad lower.

True, any difference in CTE between the components will affect the accuracy. Just looked it up and the CTE of 7075 alum is roughly half the CTE of 1215 steel. If I wanted to really keep track of actual POI changes, I would zero the scope at different temperatures, from 0*F to 100*F and make a lookup table to change my zero depending on the temperature and CTE properties of the scope, rings and rail. However, I'm not that OCD... But that's not what my wife thinks.

And then ensuring the POI difference is due to the mounts and not the ammo.

And kazoo, glad you aren't frozen anymore [LOL] I remember in 2011 when it was -27*C HERE where I lived (in the mountains at 9kft). I had to go into work to shovel the 18" of snow we got and couldn't get into my vehicle because there was 1" of ice on it, locking it shut. When I finally got into it and got to work, it was still -27*C, but with wind chill, felt like -54*C. That was freaking painful! We were doing 5min rotations of shoveling due to risk of hypothermia and frostbite. And yes, for those of you who have looked at the chart, the wind was well over 60mph taking it from -16*F to -65*F all the time.

He also told me about a store in a nearby town that does ammo reloading while you wait, and they sell their powder/primers to customers. He said they have lots of stuff, not sure on their prices but he said its more than the LGS which has very little powder/primers still.

Lee makes two kinds of turret presses. One is iron and steel, the other is steel and aluminum.

BuffCyclist
02-14-2014, 08:45
I'm not sure which he got, but he did say that he read a lot online about how that press has play in it, so when you setup your dies, you need to turn them in another 1/4-1/2 a turn. He said his didn't seem to have that much play so [Dunno]

TheBelly
02-14-2014, 08:51
Play in the turret head means that it tilts away from the ram as he pushes and tries to form a case. It also means that bullet concentricity issues may arise with loaded ammo.

BuffCyclist
02-14-2014, 09:25
Play in the turret head means that it tilts away from the ram as he pushes and tries to form a case. It also means that bullet concentricity issues may arise with loaded ammo.

So does this issue arise from the steel/aluminum press being weaker and therefore less rigid, due to a tolerance issue with the die plates, or something else entirely different?

Tolerance issues with the play of the turret on its mounting point.

its easy to tell the two apart: iron and steel one comes with a ball head ram lever. Steel and aluminum comes with a roller handle ram lever.

the Lee presses CAN auto index, but I wouldn't. You can just take that lever out.

Either has a tiny bit of play in the turret, in fact, I measured .008 front and .002 rear on a press in the FL RCBS sizing/decapping die I have in the Classic for a combined .006 deviation.

There's two ways to overcome that tiny bit of deviation if it bothers you. Put o-rings on the die between the turret and lockring - Lee dies already have this - and/or A little blue tape on the back edge of the turret head to even things out. The o-ring on the die seems to be a well known trick for any die set to allow the die to float a bit in the head and align itself to the shellplate. Others have reported (on any press) a half seat on the bullet, twist 180 and then full seat to reduce run-out.

If you're that twisted up about loading precision benchrest loads, the Lee turret press is not for you as you're likely to have an arsenal of concentricity gauges, precision benchrest dies, and other precision instruments and unlikely to have purchased a Lee turret press to begin with. :D

I auto-index with the Lee and it works fine. One of them did require a little tweaking of the nut on the rod to properly index. Instructions are included.

Someday I'll grow up and get a Dillon 550B for bulk and probably pick up a Rock Chucker for handloads. For now, the Lee presses fill both roles.

I went and saw the Lego movie on a double date last week.

Were going to see RoboCop today. My wife just said that Giada diLaurentiis' tops aren't low cut, despite what some folks would say.

OK,

Just picked up my new toy, FFL called earlier than expected and I had enough time to swing by before plans with the wife.

I am now the proud owner of a Remington 700SS 5R in .308 Win! [WooHoo]

I gotta say, this thing feels AWESOME! Can't wait to take it to the range next week!! Pics to come on Tuesday. I can't play with this until Tuesday when I'm finished playing with the wife for Valentines Day weekend. [Tooth]

Some folks think a woman is a tramp based on how "loose she is" instead of facing the reality of just how small THEIR Penis is.

That Butthole kid at Lowes screwed me over, little bastard.

It's my own fault I guess for not grabbing a tape measure and checking it right in front of him, but I trusted him to lead me to 12' 4x4's, they looked long enough loading them, get home, 10' 4x4's. [facepalm]

Go back down there AGAIN and swap them out for the right stuff, and no I didn't pay the difference. ($15 or so)

....I did get the high end LED can lights for the other half of my man cave though, so that's good....but damn I wish they weren't $40 per light. Just keep saying "savings in the long run", and go with that.

Last lighting step out here would be to get LED lights for the ceiling fan out here too. They sure have come a long way in the LED world in the last couple years, I hope they keep developing better stuff as they move along.

Hehe. When I did lots of irrigation repairs I'd just grab parts in the bins not visually checking.....nothing worse than needing 1 more 1/2 inch elbow and you have 3/4. Good times.
