Reba of course started raising hell at his presence and had to be taken to the truck so as not to ruin moment or garner to much of his attention or ire.

He was on the other side of lake which is only 50yds wide at that point. Would only take him a few moments to swim across.

Am sure the other campers/hikers/fishermen were happy when we hooked onto the travel trailer to head out.

Reba was a bit of a challenge for everyone while we were there. Everybody was good natured and helped with her socialization training but you could tell after 4 days they were glad to see us go.

Had a really good time fishing and hiking last several days at State Forest state park.

Mrs bo killed it fishing and we now have trout in the freezer, destined for the smoker.

It looks to be a Caryopteris (unknown grower's variety but I can find out the specific name if you'd like) which is in the Lamiaceae family.

Salvia is also a Lamiaceae as well as sage (obc) & catmint (gman).

Well, I was active here when I lived in CO. Then I moved to far southern NM for a job and worked nights. I was extremely active on here at nights while observing. Then I was poached for a job and moved to VA. When I got here, I didn't have access to a shooting range and began to miss it. I slowly sold off my reloading gear and the more I hung out here, the sadder I got because you all could go shooting and I couldn't. I decided I didn't need that kind of negativity in my life, so I went cold turkey.

BC is our resident Astromericist(as proclaimed by me) and engineered a radio telescope(I believe) and it was deployed to observatory in Chile.

Some of the physics he and HB used to discuss made my head hurt and I have a pretty strong background in math for a redneck.

BuffCyclist

Close buffalobo, I re-engineered and built a second version of an infrared instrument that attaches to the back end of a telescope via fiber optics (technically, the 4,000-lb instrument was installed in the basement and connects to the telescope via a 35-m length of 300 fiber optics, each which get their own target).

I'm re-orienting my career towards the engineering, specifically R&D, hence the grad school.

Erni
08-09-2019, 13:46
BC that is indeed nice. Kids and spine and grad school eqyals no sleep.
So are you now our resident telescope expert?

BuffCyclist
08-09-2019, 13:50
Definitely not an expert by any means, but I've worked on at least half a dozen telescopes measuring 1-m up to 3.5-m.

Now I pretty much just design and build instruments for the telescopes. I much prefer the designing/building aspect of astronomy than the data-reduction aspect.

Yey, got the noped started. Not a spelling error, it has no pedals therefore noped.
I think the 90 deg turn on the coil wire was causing problems, and also the float got stuck. Pulled elbow and did a little dielectic grease. Pulled carb and found nothing there, so maybe a small piece of dirt from the tank. Put it together, did a running start and it fired up and ran. Will need more tuning but at least I dont have to hunt down exotic CDI parts.
Next will be clean the tank, get reserve setting wirking, then clean and get oul injection fixed, oh and need an air filter sponge.
I might actually keep this thing, or maybe not...

How far along on the truck? I still have a dead sports car up on jack stands in my garage.

All the differential components have been media blasted and painted awaiting the return of the diffs from the rebuild shop. The nerf bars are still at powder coating, and tomorrow I'll get the t-case out and blasted before it gets rebuilt next week.

I had some delay when the transmission in the ambulance blew up last weekend, but it got reinstalled today and it works and runs better than before, so that's good.

Awsome. I want to add raspi control and remote viewing to my cheap meade telescope. It's always way too cold outside when the sky is clear in winter.
It has the meade go to mechanism, just need to figure out the protocol to comand it, learn programming, and get stellaris running on the pie or the remote pc. You know easy stuff. [emoji24] [emoji24] [emoji24]

Oh No time to move.

Seems progress is coming to this part o town. The post office sent notices, yesterday, that they're removing the cluster mail boxes down the road. Now have to provide an actual mail box in front of ones house / property. No bigger than, and set X here so their delivery person can deliver the mail. With out the need to get out of their vehicle and be able to drive away. Not having to back up, do a u turn or any other exit, just drive up then away. Which sounds great. Till you look and see every property has culverts running in front of them. As well as utilities in the same area. Guess i'll be putting a brick and rubber band on a pole in the street.

Of course being USPS who has a perfect record of on time deliveries. Said the cluster boxes will be taken out, Friday, as in the 9th ! The PO is going to look like a scene out of Frankensteen this morning.

I "think" it has something to do with usps also delivering amazon packages. Some i know are real heavy. Figure it's easier to pick up package at the PO rather than some subcontract delivery person hurting them self. Of course knowing how many windows a PO has, versus the amount of employees actually working them. We shall see how many people are in line daily to get their boxes.

Figure it's easier to pick up package at the PO rather than some subcontract delivery person hurting them self. Of course knowing how many windows a PO has, versus the amount of employees actually working them. We shall see how many people are in line daily to get their boxes.

Glad the subtlety wasn't lost

Got the t-case removed and blasted today ready to drop off on Monday for rebuild. Also got the front spring rear shackles drilled out, painted and installed. I think I gained more lift from that than I initially anticipated.

Decided to do round two at the bunghole festival tonight. It was a great fireworks show last night, and the music sounds better tonight from here anyways. Missed a blues band that was playing about an hour ago.

Sucked to find out that the tickets (card) thing was only good for rides.... SOAB. Food and beverages IS cash.

We gave the $60 card to a family of four, two cute little girls...I hope they had fun.

Loose reference to general public gatherings. The fireworks show was a little better than the previous night was, and we'll never be here for this event again. Likely the last event in Colorado that we will have attended.

Well considering i'm dropping it on the soft side of a culvert, with a 14" drop off. I doubt if anyone tries it they'll get far.

Since this was still in my head when I went to bed, I woke up remembering a story from someone I knew. They had a bus stop in front of their house. Riders would lounge on their front porch and leave their litter and their mailbox was being repeatedly knocked over by the bus swinging in for the stop. They repeatedly complained to the transit authority which did absolutely no good. They were so frustrated by the repeated inaction that they decided to fight back.

They used drilling pipe anchored in 4 feet of concrete for their mailbox post. Filled that pipe with concrete for good measure. Welded a steel plate on top that was the inside dimension of a standard mailbox base and attached the mailbox to the plate.

The next time the bus pulled in at an angle that would have normally knocked over the mailbox, the steel plate base cut a huge gash down the side of the bus. They quickly relocated the bus stop.

I met the lowest threshold for fabrication and am pretty happy about it. Except for the grinding and the welding, my daughter did everything else, turned every bolt, including using the flap disk to grind the paint off. Also, I thought I had black paint sitting around. I guess not. First actual weld on something. I should have practiced a bit first, hope it holds together.

I don't know what that means

I couldn't find the HKS speed loader. So i took a magpul AR base plate, cut it out to look something like this.

https://www.amazon.com/MakerShot-Simple-Loader-Single-Magazine/dp/B00UJ23LYG/ref=sr_1_15?keywords=ruger+22%2F45+magazine+loader&qid=1565590550&s=gateway&sr=8-15

Only i left some "ears" on the inside to catch the thumb button on the mag. When i can't find something in my piles of crap. I'll see what's laying around to fab something up that works, sometimes.

Well it's the 210, but I haven't made the proper extension cord to for my 220v outlet yet, so I was using it 110v. The chart on the side stops at 7/50 for slightly thinner metal. A wire feed speed of 50 never works for me though, so I bumped it down to 30.

Found a rural property, which has some acerage. Its under contract now, but I have my old school realtor checking to see if a backup offer makes sense from an effort and $ point. The house on that property is a bit small and old so needs lots of work, thus I think their price is a bit high. Regardless, its at a price point that the property will need to work and generate a cash flow, especially with kids college bound in a few years. Also the HOA life is not for us, several neighbors are a pain, and I want a large arse shop for the hands on hobbies.
I was thinking of doing a rural/farmish b&b that would cater to weekenders who love LoDo but want to pretend to live in the country for a day or two.

My issue with them is work space. Sure you have 3-5K plus of work shop. Unless you have awesome ventilation forget about running welders, vehicles, road testing hand loads, etc with a living space over your head.

I feel like barns are set up with 12' sections and a door between sections with an open window, or the main barn doors open would be plenty of ventilation. I do fantasize about a bunch of little shop areas partitioned off as part of a larger space.

Nice, till winter comes. You could section it in 1/2 or 3rd's

Vehicles one side, welding / fab the other and center a general fix, it hang out.

Their living quarters are built at one end, single story and part protrudes from the larger structure. Then they have lite workshops with storage above buffering from large barn area and heavier shop.

I wouldn't stress about the welding Irving. If you don't do it every day with different thickness and heat/speeds....you're not going to be great at it.

If your weld area is clean and you have enough heat and wire speed for your task, it will be strong enough. Welding is an art, and I wish I were better at it myself....I just don't do it often enough.

That barn roof requires a taller ladder than usual to get on. Now you'll have to access from the rake.

The pic looked good to me, good penetration it seemed.

When you get really confident about welding looking down at your work, you'll get pissed off when you try to weld up. It sucks with wire feed.

All of it is another skill to be happy about when you get it down and do it good. :)

It's funny you guys are talking about a 'barndominium'. Was driving up from Florissant yesterday afternoon and I-25 was a mess. Decided to drive up Perry Park Road into Sedalia. Mentioned to the wife that I just saw a barn that had 2 satellite dishes on it. I had to wonder if they were renting rooms in the barn or something.

I think it is something that is increasing in popularity. I did a roof inspection on one a few years ago. That was a scary one because it needed a 40 ladder and I had to access from the rake. I'm sure I've posted a picture, but who knows if I can find it.

Watch some vids. But also get some flat plate and practice welding them together. Butt, angle, vertical. Basic stuff that if practiced long enough become a passing thought. Then cut it in half to see how good or bad each weld penetrated.

You might consider a CC intro to welding class at night.

Most people can get onto the roof okay, it's the transition off that's difficult.

Watch some vids. But also get some flat plate and practice welding them together. Butt, angle, vertical. Basic stuff that if practiced long enough become a passing thought. Then cut it in half to see how good or bad each weld penetrated.

I've cut one practice piece, and even bought some Naval Jelly, but my prep wasn't good enough to see the weld nugget penetration. I can see where I have a tiny gap in the corner though, so know I can do better. I also need to make an extension cord with the proper plugs to use the 220.

I've watched some Welding Tips and Tricks on YouTube, but that was back when I had more time.

I think she was more shocked than the fish was!

She did the reeling, I held the rod as she was about to lose it to the water lol. What's best, it was her FIRST time going out fishing. She hasn't stopped talking about it, so I think, like the pun, that she's hooked!

I used to watch feral cats catch and eat bugs at night under parking lot lamps. It's protein.

Random Factoid: I had an uncle that was a famous entomologist that focused on beetles - https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/John-Chemsak-UC-Berkeley-entomology-professor-2539492.php

Lucky this year, the swarm appears to have been caught in the late winter weather during their migration.

In a bad season we use a shop vac to suck the bastages in. We would kill 150+ a day between shop vac and wife's home made traps.

Big time drag.

Bummer! Should have sold it years ago then!

Oh well, perhaps when I am able to get to my, also NIB Aimpoint Pro, to sell that, I'll include the Larue Mount as a bonus to possibly get me a little more total (one of these combos just sold on arfcom for $500; I'd probably sell it for $400-$450 just to be done with it).

I'd look to see how long it was listed for. Just because it sold, doesn't mean the seller got the posted asking price. Especially if it was on fora week or so.

Fair enough. It was marked sold on 7/16. Lots of them for sale at $300-350. Mine is brand new (mounted but never fired), so including the Larue mount it might sell at that range. Might...

Tornado came through town and damaged a bunch of stuff. Some people got hail, some got wind, some got both. In this case, the wind pulled this 1,250 gal water tank out of the truck and dropped it on the ground.

I worked a lot today and can no longer concentrate on the paper work. I need to sleep.

I actually got sun burnt today. I usually don't even think about it because I'm only outside for like 30 minutes at a time for maybe up to two hours tops. Today I was inspecting for almost 10 hours though. I need to drink more water.

Saw more than one Praying Mantis though, so that was a plus.
