Have to be in Pueblo tomorrow morning. Leaving the house by 5 am.

Find a decent place for breakfast. Something that will cause repeated outburst of flatulence. That would get you out of ride alongs quicker.

I haven't spent money on food for myself for maybe 5 or 6 weeks now. It's a really nice feeling. Today a guy bought me a coffee and I spent $1 on coffee tonight to help pass the time at the hospital.
Boring stories aside, tomorrow will hopefully be my last day of required ride alongs. Nice seeing what people are actually doing, and making, money-wise, first hand though. Hope to be out on my own by Monday.

Okay hoes.
1) This isn't making me all that excited to buy a truck. Thornton to Colorado Springs this morning.

This really doesn't look very secure in the photo.... As it is now, it looks like it is just holding on to the shingle on the peak, which is probably pretty unreliable. I would think that it needs something that looks like track spikes to dig into the shingles on the other side of the peak.

Irving

Well, you can't damage the roof. The Goat is nearly the same hook, but larger diameter, and aluminum. I see what you are seeing, but remember that the force you are applying will be downward, nearly parallel to the slope you are standing on, so it doesn't slide up over the Ridge. You are correct in that it tends to hook on the edge of the Ridge shingle. Alone that would not be safe, but the edge of the single only serves to stabilize the hook, while the weight is applied through the foot onto the decking. I'll let you try it some time.

I understand the angular forces, I would just be concerned about it slipping or shifting. Then again, I'm not the one that has to trust it. ;)

Great-Kazoo
02-12-2016, 16:22
Looks safe to me, on that pitch anyway. A vastly different pitch (especially steeper) it may not. By the picture, it would have no angular force on the ridge. (To come over the ridge, it would have to "hop up". The force is compression - I could see it maybe indenting a shingle at the worst.

The only risk might be if it were to somehow fall over... like if you were using it to swing on the side of the house or something. If that tips, bye bye....

(this is nearly my first post in this thread, ever [mop] ) or at least my first logical one.

I directed them to our friendly website for the place to gain AR knowledge. Hope some of them join up.

Have tentative plans to host 2 of the guys( who are brothers) for elk hunt this fall/winter.

In return they are going to host my son and I for hog hunt with their dogs. They do not shoot the hogs, they use the dogs to corral them and spear/knife them.

Awesome. My understanding is that Roth IRAs are first and foremost the best for retirement.

I was up until about 2am last night reading about web design - something I was really interested in 10 years ago, but never pursued much. I think I want to get to the point where I can start doing some freelance work and build it into it's own source of income to give me a little more flexibility and a few more options with my career in a few years. Computers, networking, and coding is stuff that comes pretty easily to me, and although it can be frustrating as heck sometimes, I think I enjoy it - especially the design portion. I've had a lot of people tell me I have a good eye for design and I've worked on a few projects within my current job where I was able to design a few different web sites and web tools (no I'm not talking about sharepoint... hahaha) and it interesting and fulfilling work. If nothing else, I learn a whole bunch and just have another set of tools in my toolbox.

Talks about the differences between Traditional and Roth IRAs. Roth isn't always the steadfast answer that many people believe it to be.

Then Part VIII of the stock series has a break down of most of the different retirement plans, including TSPs which apparently are the best thing ever and should be maxed out if available (which I believe they are to you). http://jlcollinsnh.com/2015/06/02/stocks-part-viii-the-401k-403b-tsp-ira-roth-buckets/

1. That was a good read and it completely solidified why a Roth is right for me. I absolutely plan to have an income higher than my current income later in my life. Also, what if you're 65 and you want to buy your dream house for $500k? If you take money from a traditional IRA to pay for that, you actually need to withdraw $755k because you're going to pay $255k in taxes that year. From a Roth, you withdraw $500k and admire your beautiful new home. The taxes you originally paid on that $500k are significantly less than $255k - somewhere between $30-50k, depending on how much and how long you were contributing to the account.

1.1 This article seems to have completely left out the most significant reason why a Roth IRA is advantageous: Tax Free Growth. If you contribute 330k (max for married couple x 30 years) and it grows to $1.15M over 30 years (only earning 7%, the market average), in a traditional IRA, you pay taxes on all $1.15M as you withdraw it. In a Roth, you only pay taxes on the contributions, and NONE of the growth. Remember, the growth is the real reason we have IRAs to begin with! Unless my income is more than $200k/yr (which would change the fundamental argument here), I would much rather contribute $330k of taxed income over 30 years than get taxed on $1.15M - or significantly more than $1.15M because it will continue to grow as long as the account is funded - for the rest of my life.

1.2 I plan to pass a good chunk of my wealth on to future generations of HoneyBadgers and Roth IRAs offer several advantages when it comes to estate planning.

2. As someone who formerly contributed to a TSP account.... It was terrible. Terrible returns. Turrible. My mutual funds over the past 5 years have averaged 10.2% (I'd like to be somewhere between 12-14%) and my TSP accounts (which I set up to mirror my mutual funds as closely as possible) ran a 5-year average of 6.7%. Yes TSP has a few tax advantages, but it doesn't make up for the lost earnings.

HB, did you read where he does the math showing the difference in earnings compared to the taxes paid? I particularly liked the part about funding a traditional IRA, then transferring it to a Roth later, but I don't know if those specific circumstances would ever come up in my life. I like the idea of funding both, and as he initially points out, the most important part is funding at all, and much less w which path you chose.

Interesting that you didn't have a great experience with the TSP's. Nice to bounce ideas off of someone who is active in real markets. There is a link to some management tool on there as well, but I didn't post it.

Yeah I read that and his math is sound, but if the money is going to be there for 30 years or more (which is the case for both of us at this point, because we're both at least 30 years away from 59.5) it almost always makes more sense to do a Roth, primarily because of the tax free growth. If you max your contributions to your and Mrs Irving's IRAs every year for 30 years, using the unimpressive 7% figure above, you will have basically made more than $700k in absolutely 100% tax-free income.

If you max your Roth and have money left over, then by all means, put it in good mutual funds outside of your IRA and let it grow alongside your retirement, but without the tax advantages. Alternatively, this is a perfect time to really diversify your portfolio in real estate or other types of investments.

If I'm wrong about any of this, please stop me, but I am 98% confident in my conclusions. If I am screwing up the math, or reading the tax law wrong, stop me now! -I am relying on these things for my future! hahaha

Speaking of scary stuff. Standing at the top of a 32' ladder, in a tree, with the wind blowing; so everything is moving left to right about 3 inches in either direction. THEN, asking your wife to pull on the rope you just hung and you find out you hung it too far out because when she pulls on the rope, the tree branch moves down a full six inches against the ladder. I thought I was going to vomit.
The next part was trimming a branch from the same spot with the worry that when the weight of the cut branch is relieved, the trunk holding the ladder will rise enough to drop the ladder. After that we just flew a kite in the wind. Heh.

Just regular no knead bread (flour, salt, yeast, water) and flavor to taste.

I ended up putting them back into the oven and the outside is way over done on both of them now. The insides are perfect but you pretty much have to cut off the crust. Haven't screwed that up since my first try. Oh well, still very tasty. You can taste the cinnamon and nutmeg in one, and the onion flakes and garlic in the other. Came out quiet well despite baking the crust on so hard.

I started down that rabbit hole when I:

"Chipped" my A6 (only stage I)
Chipped the trans controller

Result? Pretty good run until; blew a K03 (turbo)
Put in K04's, downpipes, held off on the rest.
Wrench said the trans/TC would be "fine" at (still) stage I
10 months later, TC started acting up, so got to pay to have the engine pulled again and got that done (aftermarket TC)
Was tempted to go stage II/II but ran out of money.
Probably a good thing. I'm just going to drive this till the wheels fall off.
Being a 13 year old Audi, that could happen at any moment.

OTOH, my 2004.5 Ram has been mildly BOMB'd since 2006 @~7.5K and never really gives me a lick of trouble.

Mommy and daddy are fighting again... [Cry]

Ammo is the one thing I actually have a good amount of, but I could always use some 5.56. Seeing as I don't have the time, space, or motivation to reload out here (I don't even have room for a 4ft workbench :() I may be looking to sell some of my reloading stuff if you're interested. I have lots of brass (all .223 and 9mm) and a bunch of primers, bullets, and powder for each. As a rough guestimate, I'd probably be looking to sell or trade about 12k primers (SRPs and SPPs), I think I have ~16lbs of clays and ~ 12lbs H335. I have at least 1k 115gr FMJs and probably about 2k .223 bullets (about 1k of them are the really accurate "Dogtown" bullets). Probably have 2-3k 9mm brass (dirty) and 3-4k .223/5.56 brass in various stages of cleaning. Let me know if you're interested and we'll work something out. If you're really interested, I'll pull it all out and get an accurate count of everything. If not, It'll stay in storage until I move out of CA.

I think your version of "that one thing" is significantly different than my version of "that one thing".

Also, context is everything. For example, If I told you that Mrs. HB gave me that one thing for Valentine's day, that might mean something totally different than if I said to a buddy "hey, lets grab some guns and go shoot that one thing next to the old barn." See? Context is everything.

Perhaps, but that other 10% that will kick their ass will get them fired and lose a fortune 50/100 client for forever in a heartbeat. What's that worth?

I'm also the ONLY guy in the company that works on one particular platform. Not all the time, mind you, but I'm it and it's 25-30% of my workload on delivery, and about 10% on pre-sales support and architecture (for which I don't get measured/comp on). Some of it is annual contract work that rebooks year after year.

One of my client's purchasing guys decided they were not going to use our company any longer - through no fault of ours. My contact found out, and made a huge fuss with exec mgmt that they couldn't complete two highly visible and critical upcoming projects without me. That and some smooth plays from our execs got us back into the account and consequently last year the company closed the largest ___ platform sale in NA for a particular OEM that also has three letters in its name. Do you think any of that matters? Hell no.

I do that! But then again, I can transfer a g.i bill to them, or make them join the military for free college....... If budget isn't cut again.

Like a true financial advisor, HoneyBadger did not answer my question, and at the same time over complicated his answer in a way that suggested I chose a product that has high fees. :p

We'll get it right. Lol

Hey now, I answered 80% of your question! And all mutual funds have fees: either they are loaded, or "no-load" but you want ones with proven track records of out-performing the market and a low expense ratio.

I'm pretty much settled on Vanguard's VTSAX. Thanks for getting back to me.

True, but by May of this year, I will have crossed the inversion line on this one. I.e.: 529 will have more money in it than the current value of my "arsenal"

Why? That one will never do any better than the market. Isn't the goal outperforming the market?

No, trying to outperform the market is almost guaranteed to fail.

This documentary is next on my list of research. I think it's something you'd be interested in. I'm going to try and watch it tonight and I'll let you know. See if you can watch it as well. It's called The Retirement Gamble and is about the money we lose to fees.

Why would you think that? Millions of people do it every day. I've done it. You can do it to. It isn't some sort of magic.

Dave Ramsey actually responded to this recently in one of his episodes. It's basically a big old crock of shit. And coming from PBS, we shouldn't really expect anything less.

I haven't watched it yet. I just started it and the very first guy sounded like a whiner so I'll have to see if the rest is as dumb as the first guy.

Oh Jesus, the very first guy is making more than I've ever made in my life and is crying about trying to figure out a way to save only 10-15% of his salary.

With my old job I was able to contribute 13% of my wages. Not so much anymore. Things are a wee bit tighter.

My new goal is to try and save (and invest) 50% of my income. So far it's MUCH easier than I ever imagined it would be.

EDIT: The cutting back spending part is easier I mean.

Yeah, that happens sometimes. It's all about perspective.
