Yeah, that'll definitely make him shy. Most people don't realize that most dogs are very careful with their feet as part of their pack animal instincts. If they were in the wild and injured a foot, they would die.

Mornin' Hos!!

Might have time to head to the range to zero my scope/rifle today, pretty excited! Wish I had time to test some reloads, but I'll be lucky if I can even get to the range at all.

Belly, I'd be interested in hearing how you develop a load for a precision rifle. Do you do a ladder test (1 round of each charge at 300+ yards, aiming at same spot and look for nodes, then repeat with smaller powder increments adding 100yds) or do you just fire over a chronograph looking for single digit SD's?

eta: I only ask because I either need to buy a chronograph (looking at Competition Electronics ProChrono) or figure out the distance to shoot for a real ladder test. I planned on shooting my test loads through a chrono. If the first 2 shots of each load had velocity variation greater than 15fps, I'd move to the next load (because that indicates a SD greater than 10). If they were under 15fps, I'd shoot the remaining 4 shots for a 5 shot group and record the data. I'm leaning away from purchasing a chrono due to the added expense, but only have access to 300yds easily, if I want to head to the 1000yd range, I'd first have to find out where it is, and then I'd only be able to shoot there once every other week at most.

OCW test, then I find out what the chrony says so I can compute for longer range... then I test the longer range.

The SD and ES bit is it's own animal.

You laugh, but we leave our dog outside for long periods of time (sometimes several hours in good weather) and we don't have a fence of any sort. He knows 18 different commands and follows them well. He doesn't tear up the house or get into trouble when we leave him home alone for 9-10 hours every day. He just turned 2 and is very much still a puppy.

Why wouldn't 100yds be adequate for testing? Ignoring environmental factors like wind, shouldn't the accuracy translate from 100yds to 300yds with a factor of 3? Am I showing my lack of shooting knowledge/skill? [Dunno]

Can you believe this guy?! Sheesh... noobs, amiright?! [Shake]

[LOL]

What I was referring to is a ladder test, where you shoot one round at each charge, aiming at the same point. What happens, is more powder equals faster bullet speed equals higher up on the target, effectively climbing a ladder. If you do it correctly, you'll notice a few rounds cluster together vertically closer than the others, that is effectively a "node" and where your rifle will be most accurate, because the muzzle will be at the top (or stopped) of a node in a sine wave pattern from the harmonics of the barrel. Everything I read about this said start at 200yds and work out 100yds each iteration.

The longer distance you shoot, the longer the ladder will be which presumably means the nodes will be easier to spot.

Yea, me too, at least to precision shooting/reloading. There is a lot of debate online whether Ladder test, OCW (optimal charge weight), shooting for groups, or using a chronograph to get single digit StdDev's is the most precise way of determining the best load data for a rifle. That's why I asked. I want to start testing loads for my rifle so I can start reloading at that charge to have ammo on hand, but wasn't sure which is the smarter way to go about picking that load.

Yea, that's what I've been looking at for the correct method of the OCW test. But this link was making me question which is a better method:

It seems to me that reducing STDEV would be "a" best approach assuming one knows the rifle's inherent accuracy. This eliminates shooter error and besides it's all up to god (physics) anyway after the bullet leaves the barrel.

Got my rifle zeroed in 6 shots, then used another 14 to fine tune and think I got it dialed in. First time shooting prone, I think I like it! I meant to take a picture for you guys of my setup titled "A Little Monday Yoga", because yes, I used my wife's old yoga mat as a shooting mat and it worked great!

Top large dot is 50yds getting on paper and working down. Bottom left dot is the first group of "5", and I pulled the shot (said a naughty word immediately after pulling trigger and before checking) so I moved to the middle dot without shooting the fifth shot. On the bottom middle, it kept wandering down so I dialed up .2mil and then reset myself in my position. Bottom right dot is the final group of 5. I'd like to say I pulled/jerked the shot on the top edge, but I didn't. All in all, not bad and I'm pretty impressed with how this rifle shoots! It will definitely only get better as I become more used to shooting prone and get a lot more dry fire practice in to learn the trigger.

Shoot multiple rounds at each charge, but not all of a particular charge in a string. Keep the same POA for all shots. 200-300 is where you'll start to see some decent spreading, yet still be able to keep it on the broad side of a barn. The farther the better.

the hard part with this testing is spotting which hit comes from which load. The basic thought says that the higher the charge, the higher the impact on the target. That's difficult to do if you've got an SD of 40 and an ES of 70.

For what I'm trying to get done, I'm not concerned with 100 yard shots. I want to know how this ammo/gun combo does at distance.

Shoot one round from each charge weight, then repeat. Take note of where every round hit before you take the next shot.

What you described in the first 2 paragraphs was the Ladder test, but with more than 1 shot per charge, right? The OCW test is shooting 3 rounds (1 of bullet A at target 1, 1 of bullet B at target 2, 1 of bullet C at target 3, etc) at their own target and comparing the clusters of groupings.

I got my rifle zeroed today, so the next time I'm able to go (and spend more than at most an hour like today), I'll take my reloads and do the OCW test at 100yds, then when I find the nodes and develop more refined, will move that out to 200yds.

I'm glad this gun is working for you. As hard as I lobbied for it, I would be legitimately embarrassed if it didn't shoot.

Now that you know that the gun works and that you can put a few into a small group, there is NO reason to not do that all the time.

Oh it's definitely a very nice rifle and is a also a real shooter. Granted, shooting a 1moa grouping isn't the best and I can do that with my AR, but I'm 99% positive that was my doing. I've never shot prone before and I'll be honest in saying that in trying to determine where the buttstock should go, it touched my collarbone on one shot and let's just say my shoulder is pretty sore today. I might buy a slip-on recoil pad (Limbsaver) to use for a while until I get used to the shoulder placement, but the HS-Precision 1/4" piece of hard rubber is not a recoil pad.

I've been reading a lot since yesterday about recoil mitigation and have come to the conclusion that I wasn't pulling the rifle into my shoulder hard enough, or preloading the bipod enough (though it seemed as if anytime I preloaded the bipod, the feet would just slide forward). I definitely need to be doing a lot more dryfire practice in the prone position to work in buttstock placement. However, I can honestly say that I never jerked the trigger, while a little on the heavier side, it is a very crisp, clean trigger and I probably won't change it for a long time, if ever. Sure, if it was 1lb lighter, that'd be really ideal but I'm not gonna pay a couple hundred bucks for a replacement. Time for finger pushups! [LOL]

Thanks for the recommendation on the rifle Belly! I'm really happy with it overall and know that it will be a great training platform for me for years to come.

I'm playing pool, trying to get my 8 ball break down better. I can scatter stuff decent, but I'm not pocketing BILLIARD balls on the break the way I'd like to..... trying to get my sheet together on that.

Had a good lesson with Vincent tonight, and I don't think doing natural minor MUSIC KEYS backwards, is going to be as hard to do as I first thought.

Completely skipping the jokes from earlier...

Spoke with my chief engineer about the design I've been stuck on, we came up with a few other designs and as a last minute idea, I said "hey I had this random thought the other day but never looked into it further". Turns out, that idea is the best solution yet (from a simplicity/elegance aspect) and I get to do a redesign.

Shoulder is less sore from shooting the other day. Other shoulder is still feeling dead, and no, it's not because of this:

A differently kind of neato thing happened today too. A new parking garage is being built for the Denver General Complex, and early this week some HUGE wooden spools were stacked up in their "junk" pile. I asked a foreman on Tuesday if I could have a few, but he said that the main dude overseeing stuff on the site had said he wanted them, and told me to ask again on Thursday.

So, today I roll over there on our afternoon trip down there, and find a guy......he points me to Mr. Main Dude. I walk up and and start talking to the guy, and right away he says, "Yeah, you're the guy who wants the spools to shoot 'em up". He was messing with me.... the Tuesday guy told him I wanted them for our personal range for tables. Totally cool guy, way pro gun, way anti lib.....reminded me that he was gonna take them, but during our short conversation he knew he was giving them to a like minded brother, who was gonna use them for shooting, and let me have them.

So it's neat when stuff like that happens. Really nice sturdy spools, about 36 inches high, quality wood, in great condition...I'm jazzed about it.

Ugh.....running, no thanks.

We had a 'ruck march' for PT this morning. You'd think it was a death march out of Bataan the way folks were moving. It was a 1.2 mile loop we had to complete 5 laps of, so..... Yeah, 6 miles with a whole 25 lbs in the ruck. I just used 1000 bullets of the 175gr SMK variety. 1000x175=175,000... Divide that by 7,000 and you got yourself about 25 lbs. I just wrapped that little box in a woodie and shoved it in my pack.

after I lapped the non-pack-wearers and almost the entirety of the 'C' ability group, I just stopped.

heres the thing though.... I'm not in that good of shape, and I'm not really good at rucking. Spectators must have thought I was an all star because of how I was stepping it out, but that was only compared to the rest of the group. Wow!

mcjhr
03-07-2014, 21:40

I have serious frustrations with 'standardized' PT. the PRT junk is meant for a fat 19 yr old to be able to pass a PT test after 9 weeks of regular use.

this is not what trained Soldiers do. We go out and push ourselves and get stronger and faster. This cannot happen by doing five repositions of 'bend and reach'.

ugh!!

Who would go through a TSA checkpoint with an expired ID? Yep the guy in front of me. I was the only person exiting the cattle chute with enough sense to walk to the end screener. Guy cuts me off then presents his shit. All those other saps ended up ahead of me anyway..Serves me right...

At least the guy had to get probed as an alternative form of ID
