This is why ventilation and felt are important on a roof. Even in winter your roof has a very wide range of temperature, which means a lot of movement and a lot of need to try and regulate temperature. What was the low last night, 32 degrees? Same roof, picture taken within seconds of each other. North and South sides respectively.

So I'm supposed to start my new job tomorrow. Start job shadowing anyway, which I imagine is unpaid. Since it's going to snow a bunch, I've accepted the reality that I more than likely won't be working tomorrow, and probably the whole week.
As I've already received my last paycheck from my previous employer, and I now have to buy all my own insurance (General Liability, Work comp, Health for the entire family, and Long Term Disability), not to mention all the other regular expenses that will keep coming in; not working presents a bit of a problem for me. So I've gone onto the Nextdoor website and let everyone know that I'll be open to shoveling driveways and sidewalks for tomorrow and probably Tuesday. Fingers crossed for getting some business tomorrow. :D

Last time it snowed, some guy made a post bitching about how no kids went door to door shoveling walks for cash these days. I clicked his name, found out where he lived (next street over) and just showed up at his door and he paid me $20 to shovel just his sidewalk and the walk to his house.

I thought about that, but I'm not sure if anyone will even respond to me. I only made the post for the immediate neighborhood (only 124 houses are members), and should have done it for the surrounding.
Also, I doubt your snow blower would fit in my car. Thank you for the offer though.

Why no cobra ins coverage from work?

$20 per sidewalk and up to front steps is a deal. You might charge that for up to 6". Start getting serious accumulation or the wet heavy stuff. We'll be reading your next thread titled
ASK A PERSON SITTING IN THE ER, ANYTHING.

Irving
02-01-2016, 00:06
There is Cobra from work, but it is extremely expensive. It'd be cheaper to just get the full plan I was quoted for what we'll most likely end up getting anyway ($8,400ish/yr for new plan vs $11,500ish/yr company plan). Instead, we're going to get temp insurance in the mean time. It's about half the price (including with picking up Aflac in addition) and has the same coverage, with the exception of not covering preventative stuff, which everyone pretty much just got taken care of this month. You can have temp insurance for up to 11 months. Since my company insurance ends tonight, I can step right into a temp policy for the rest of this year. Since all the plans are extremely high deductible plans, you're pretty much paying everything out of pocket anyway.

As for the $20 for sidewalk, it was a great deal. The dude had so much stuff in his driveway that I couldn't have shoveled it even if I had wanted to, and he still offered me $20 to do the sidewalk and front door walk. Hope he hits me up again tomorrow.

Average part-time pizza delivery jobs in America make just under $1500/mo last time I looked.

Irving
02-02-2016, 21:48
That could be true, here are the numbers from my last time delivering for Papa John's back in 2011.

Runs - 931
Miles - 3,159
Tips - $4,143.69
Average tip - $4.45
Highest tip - $26

Add to that the approximately $50 a week I made in paychecks ($2,500) and that got me up to just over $6,500.
However, that was working strictly Saturday and Sunday nights, and not even always a close shift. It was decent work and I'd do it again in a heart beat if I had to (especially at these gas prices).
With that said, I will be working within a few days after the snow melts off. So I'm not at the point of needing to look for other work beyond shoveling driveways.

I was actually hoping you'd show in here tonight.
First, hope your face is feeling well.

Second, I need someone to talk about early retirement with.

I'm here. Thanks for the thoughts. My face hurts. I just maxed my dosage of Vitamin M and Oxycodone and now I'm eating ice cream.

HB! I figured you'd be too doped up to stop by. I pray the surgery went well and the healing process goes quickly. Stay away from ice cream and other dairy whenever you have anything going on with your mouth, jaw, and throat. The dairy creates phlegm which is not something you want to deal with while your jaw hurts.

Just excited that I'm about to pay off 1/3 of our remaining debt (of which 80% is medical costs).
Once work becomes more steady, I anticipate being able to pay the remainder off in 2 months or less.

Can't you almost buy two new wastegates for that price? It's been a while since I've been out of that scene.

Yes..... "and a new set of both are $325."

I can get a pair of turbosmart IWG's for about $325 shipped that should work. But that's $325 of UN-expected expense. I'm working with Ford to see if they are willing to work with me and give me stock replacements for free as warranty/TSB work. The F150 ecoboost's have many tiny problems that add up to be a pain in the ass.

The stress of having already received my last paycheck, and not being able to start the new job, in addition to them dropping the bomb shell on me yesterday of "We don't like your car, you're going to need to buy a truck or SUV instead," when I've been talking to them for months now is a little unfortunate, but I think it will pass and things will be great by this time next month.

The springs are my issue with the stock IWG's. Since I put aftermarket downpipes on, they can't hold the pressures, and now that I'm tuned they are really pissed off. Ford has a Technical service bulletin (TSB) for a replacement because they know that they are weak. I am out of warranty so Ford doesn't want to replace them even though they are a known issue with the ecoboost engine. Just frustrating is all.

Just convince the multimillion dollar company that me driving around with a ladder on the roof rack of my car, is no less professional than driving around with a ladder on the roof rack of a truck or suv; and to buy a vehicle that uses twice the gas solely for aesthetics is unfiltered stupidity, especially considering that driving all over the metro area, every day, means that gas will be my number one over head cost far and above anything else. Increase charitable giving outside of church by $100
Increase church giving by $100 (specifically to fund the school)
$458.33 goes to my Roth IRA (divided evenly between Growth, Growth and Income, Aggressive Growth, and International Mutual Funds)
$200 to a 529 for each baby HB (to be increased over time)
$200 to traditional IRA (divided same way as above)
The rest will be put toward saving for shorter term goals: Disneyland trip this spring, A Vacation next year just for mom-and dad (kiddos will likely be staying with my in-laws) a few basic home improvements, fixing the broken windshield in both our vehicles, etc.,

Xtend & Climb 785P Aluminum Telescoping Ladder Type I Professional Series, 15.5-Foot https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JIL4Z8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_ZXySwbWGRAMFJ

Irving
02-02-2016, 23:22
I have a 17' ladder that fits in the car and a 24' that will ride on the roof. I also have a 32' that will go on the roof. Boss seems to think I'll be needing the 32' every day. Talking to the techs who actually work out here, they say maybe only once a week do you actually need the 32'. Either way, the point still stands that you don't need a truck to haul a ladder. Maybe seeing a ladder on the roof of a car isn't what one might expect, but it's not like I've got it laying on towels and secured with a rope through open windows.

I understand the concern, but my car is clean, newer than it needs to be, doesn't have bumper stickers or body damage, and perhaps most importantly, has a rack to hold the ladders.

Thanks for the help on the ladder ideas guys, but I have to have the big sliders.

Irving
02-02-2016, 23:39
This is the 17' I have, it's great and fits in the car because it folds and extends. They make this style ladder all the way up to 27', but they get very heavy by that length.

Well, as you know I've been reading the MrMoneyMustache blog from front to back, and this is the entry I landed on today. It is about increasing your charitable giving, so may be of interest to you. I haven't read it all, so I hope it's not garbage. I actually just came back here to tell you about it.

http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/09/29/weekend-edition-the-life-you-can-save/

As to your plan, I don't see anything that can be utilized by you right now. I like the idea of 401k's and IRA's, but since they aren't available to you (without heavy penalties) until you are old, I don't get very excited about them. You already have a rental, and while rentals can make great money, they aren't for everyone. While I'd like to turn my current house into a rental, I'm more excited about the income than the prospect of actually dealing with a rental. Especially since in my neighborhood, I can't set the price high enough to keep out riff raff (but I'll certainly try). You have more experience in the stock market than I do, but I've been very interested in index funds and stocks that pay dividends. The guest posting on MMM about the aristocrat stocks is interesting (http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/01/02/guest-posting-the-dividend-aristocrats/).

You're way ahead of me when it comes to financial independence, so I don't feel all that comfortable commenting on any of your decisions. I like the college for the kids idea, and we also have had about $2,500 sitting around for a few years waiting to take a trip to Harry Potter land. We just finished the books a few months ago and need to actually book the trip, but I'd really like to do so once that remaining debt is paid off.

On the MMM note, I have to read something every day to maintain motivation long enough to make serious changes. Luckily he reconciles the viewpoint at the end of the book by suggesting a simple scale: allocate only 1% of your first $105,000 of income to charity, 10% of your next 100,000, and so on.
I think this is an interesting idea and the general idea matches our plans for increasing our giving with our ability to give over time. Obviously giving away 50% of a $50k/yr income is going to make it very difficult to build wealth. Our current level of charitable giving is somewhere between 2-3% of my income, and being out of debt allows us to help people in immediate need, like my high school friend who just had very rare mono/mono twins (more info here, if you're feeling charitable [Beer] http://www.plumfund.com/medical-fund/miracle-gilbert-twins)

As to your plan, I don't see anything that can be utilized by you right now. I like the idea of 401k's and IRA's, but since they aren't available to you (without heavy penalties) until you are old, I don't get very excited about them.

This is just a part of the strategy. The $1800/mo is not all of our surplus, just the additional from paying off this debt. Tucking away money for later and letting it grow with (and hopefully much better than) the market. It's a pretty tried and true plan, but there is a reason I won't be putting EVERYTHING extra into IRAs. As my income grows, I plan to invest in real estate (without borrowing money to do so!) and some other business ideas. Ensure that if you do start putting into an IRA that you max out the contributions for a ROTH IRA before putting anything in a traditional IRA. With a Roth, all the growth is 100% tax free. If a Roth IRA grows up to $1M over time, that $1M is $1M. A traditional IRA at $1M is worth considerably less because you have a pay taxes on anything you take out. Another thing to consider: I plan on being in a much higher tax bracket when I turn 60 than I am right now, and hopefully you will be too.

You already have a rental, and while rentals can make great money, they aren't for everyone. While I'd like to turn my current house into a rental, I'm more excited about the income than the prospect of actually dealing with a rental.

It can be lucrative, but it can also bring a ton of headaches and if you get really unlucky or don't manage it well, it can turn into a money-pit. Also, don't ever own a rental property more than about an hour away from where you live. (Yes I broke this rule badly, but I had somewhat unique circumstances under which I moved and every day I pray that it doesn't bite me in the butt.) Also, I hope you already know this, but don't try to borrow your way out of debt - Don't buy a rental property unless you can pay cash for it. Right now, I would be in trouble pretty quickly if something happened to my CO house and the renters stopped paying, left, or badly damaged the property. A very disproportionate amount of my income is tied up in mortgages right now... and that's never a good thing. Our 5-year plan includes selling one or both of our houses and buying something substantially cheaper on a 15yr fixed rate mortgage in which the monthly payment is less than 25% of my take-home pay.

I probably am not "way ahead" of you, if at all. In total I owe a huge amount of money that I really have no intention of paying off (As I said above, I plan to sell one or both houses before the term of the loan is up). Realistically, I don't think I've done that well. I did well securing a reliable income, but it's also reliably not going to pay as much as I'd like. [LOL] I've made some really bad financial decisions and done some bad investing (maybe I should call it "out"vesting since the money was going out instead of in). I have a lot of plans and I like charting things out in excel, but personal finance is 80% behavior and only 20% knowledge. Living below your means, etc... And I know you know that.

Yeah, I've done a lot of reading on higher-level economic philosophy (Mises, Hayek, Friedman, Sowell) and only a little reading on modern personal finance (O'Rourke, Ramsey, Thomas E Woods Jr., a little bit of MMM). I'm well on my way to being a millionaire someday, but instead of at 60, I'd really like to have that kind of money when I'm 35 or 40 (apart from my retirement accounts, which should hit $1M when I'm 39, but I won't be able to touch that money for another 20 years). I need a better plan to raise my income, which is pretty hard to do while in the military because there are specific limitations on having a traditional 2nd job. With that in mind, I need to find a way to independently create a second source of income on my own. i.e.: not working for someone else.

I'm not paying any extra in principle for either house right now, because they are one or both likely going to be gone in a few short years. I was paying a considerable amount extra on our Colorado Springs house for about 2 years, but stopped when we moved away. I paid enough to take about 2 years off the 30yr mortgage term. I really am not planning on keeping this house in CA. It's simply not a place where I want to own property.

As I said in post 73624 (which was after your post) the $1800 is not the only surplus we have in the budget, just the additional surplus from paying off the rest of our consumer debt. We are stashing away an emergency fund to cover about 6 months of our living expenses, in addition to a separate emergency fund for our house in Colorado Springs.

Wait your car is $1800/month? You're kidding right?

It's an Xterra, and you thought Toyotas were expensive. I always over paid car payments as well. I've been over paying my mortgage by a few thousand dollars every year and it takes a 30 year mortgage down to something like an 18 year mortgage.

These conversations really have to be framed in the state of mind that there are more than one way to skin a cat. For example, even though I almost zero money in any retirement fund (due to previous job loss and working at places that didn't provide), I'm not really worried be because if things got very bad, I could move in with in-laws and immediately rent my house for $1200-$1500 a month, which would easily pay my mortgage that is only $870 a month.

HoneyBadger
02-03-2016, 22:34
I snowballed. None of the interest rates on my debts were significantly different. Plugging the numbers it was a $206 difference over 4.5 years and $105k. Barely a drop in the bucket for me.

HoneyBadger
02-03-2016, 22:36
Stacking is mathematically smarter, but as I said above (which just echoes Dave Ramsey) personal finance is 80% behavior and 20% knowledge. Gaining the momentum and motivation from paying off the smallest debt is much more valuable to me than my $206.

I had a lot of debt and did the snowballing method a few years ago. It worked so well for me that I started telling other people about it. Then one day I decided to check out Dave Ramsey and found that was what he has been promoting for years. I can second that the system does work to mentally condition yourself and actually get you some where against your second. Doubly so since I figured it out on my own before thinking to ask.

I had to look it up. Whereas Dave Ramsey suggests paying debts smallest to largest (in amount), "stacking" is where you order them largest to smallest in terms of interest rate, so you pay off the highest interest debts first.

Also, just for the record: Flyboy is a postwhore newb and secretly shops at Bath and Body Works for his OWN birthday presents. :D

Oh I don't miss that drive at all, nor do I miss ANY I25 Southbound coming out of Thornton in the AM, or I25 Northbound heading to Thornton in the evening. Moving a couple miles from work has been the best thing I've done in years.

Outside a mortgage, we have no debt. However i also have no retirement fund. Oh well. Can't say i didn't enjoy life to the fullest over the years.

Nice to see you have long range plans, one of which doesn't require working in the later years. Hopefully

Interestingly i have an offer from a friend down Mexico way. Expressed an interest in opening a pizzeria. There's one problem with that, I don't speak spanish , fluently.

He says No Problem. If anyone talks to you just say, FUCK YOU YOU FUCKIN IDIOT. AND... They'll eat it up. An italian in Mexico yelling at them like in the movies. We'll make $$$
My concern is the ones of less savory reputation. Hate to get beheaded over a slice of pepperoni pizza. No Problem he says again. My family owns one of the largest funeral home business in the state [facepalm]

On this week's episode of FUCK YOU, AMIGO!, "Why you no gas mileage?!"
Despite what my OBDII Bluetooth thingy says, there is no way this vehicle gets this good of mileage. When I used to drive it to the tech center, it used a 1/4 tank EACH WAY.

It was throwing a CEL for emissions, but still managed to actually pass emissions last week. At one point, I got the codes for, iirc, bank 1 sensor 1, and bank 2 sensor 1. It's a V6 so I know it has two pre-cat sensors and two post-cat sensors, and that while the post-cat sensors might throw a code, they shouldn't have an affect on gas mileage. As you can imagine, I only bought two.

Got my Espresso powder, couple of 5 hr energy's and a Monster drink. That should get me home later where I'm certain to crash hard once I walk in the door.

The Beave's friend Larry sure is a goof ball. Today he talked Beaver into letting some wise guy borrow his new bike and the kid stole it! Yesterday Larry started his own secret club after Beaver joined the Bloody Five without him. The day before that Larry and Beaver ditched out on dance class and got their suits dirty riding around on a horse with the neatest girl they every met. Sometime earlier this week Beaver gave some whiskey to Andy (the town drunk) because he didn't know any better. Ward and June learned an important lesson about keeping stuff from Beaver to try and protect him.

Gee Stu, that sure is swell (that's the best Leave It To Beaver based line I could come up with).

Leave It To Beaver trivia:

Remember the character Eddie Haskell? Ken Osmond, his real name, later became a LAPD Motor Cop. In September 1980, he was shot three times while chasing a stolen taxi. Two of the bullets struck his bullet-proof vest and the third ricocheted off his belt buckle. The photo, below is Ken in the ambulance right after he was shot.

What a week.

Flew out Sunday 0800 for the east coast, got back tonight at 2100.

Week was good, but slow going. Today started great then went downhill after an event knocked a very small part of a medical center system offline for a few minutes. Not a pretty situation to be in. Right down to the wire if I was going to make my flight or not.

Guess my contact didn't have the AOK from everyone for the work to be done. Doh!

Irving
02-06-2016, 01:01
For the record, the reason it took me two hours to take apart the stair climber, was because I separated every single thing that could possibly be separated, down to the screws on the circuit board. I kept all the hardware and was thinking that I'd get more for the steel sections and having removed all the plastic and stuff. I went to a new place and it turns out that they just weigh your vehicle when you arrive and when you leave. Had I known that, I could have been done in 10 minutes. However, I did get the opportunity to clean out pretty much all the metal I've been saving for the last 4 years or so. While I made under $20 over all, it was still nice to clean up my place a little.

Also, the Focus gets MUCH better mileage than the Amigo (around 20 mpg).

When I was in high school, I had a sweet job scrapping old signs. The best was when GM dealerships all changed to a slightly different style of sign and the old ones all had to be scrapped - They had 3/32 stainless steel sheets going all the way up and around the sides of the sign and sign post (see pic below). I had to disassemble them, remove all other metal from the stainless, and then haul it to the scrap yard. After about 2 weeks of working 4-5 hrs a day, I hauled a flatbed trailer to the scrap yard and came back with $2200 in cash. Most money I had ever held in my life when I was 17. I paid the sign company their share (40%) and was very happy. I wish I still had something like that available to me... We'd be swimming in money! (and metal)

Yeah, one of my dad's friends from church owned the sign company and was always looking for manual labor. He definitely couldn't afford to pay one of his sign techs at $30+/hr to break down wooden crates and scrap old signs. Most of them were not so lucrative, but that was a fun example. He also paid me $10/hr to do custodial work around the lot: cleaning, sweeping, organizing, etc. Even did some remodeling for him. It was a great job that taught be the value of good, hard work.

Costco.

Cooking and eating leftovers is a HUGE way to save money. Most of my co-workers eat out every day and probably spend close to $50/week just on lunch. I probably spend about $6-8 week on my lunches because I always bring leftovers and fresh fruits and veggies. Packing my lunch also forces me to make healthier dietary choices. :)

I found it. I dare you to find cheaper bulk prices than this place. I compared with four other sites, at the 16oz/1lb size and this site is significantly cheaper on Ancho, cumin, and something else I already forgot.

For the month of January, we managed to only have spent $89 on eating out. January is the first month I've started tracking monthly expenses, but I'm positive that is a huge reduction from normal.
It's amazing how quickly behavior can change with motivation. I started getting heavy into the idea of reducing my spending about a month before leaving my job, and eating the same sandwiches every day for lunch had never put such a smile on my face before.

On a negative note, Total Beverage was selling 30-pack of 12 oz cans of Honey Brown for $16.99 for months. I went in there tonight to check, and now the price is up to $18.99 for the 30-pack. A sad day in cheap beer history. Still way cheaper than Coors and Budweiser.

Until you have a food saver, you're wasting money on spices. etc. You can cook up 20 lbs of poultry with every seasoning imaginable. Unless you have a way to freeze them , without a lot of freezer burn. It's (IMO) a waste. Sure freezer bags work. Unfortunately you don't get the same level of freshness from a freezer bag as you do with vacuum sealing
When we turn the smoker, grill , oven or stove on. There's at least 2-3 different foods being cooked. Some done for freezing to be used at a later date. It's nice grabbing a few different vacuum sealed food items out for next weeks meals. YMMV

Throwing rub on a piece of meat right before smoking is akin to painting a dirty car, IMHO.

Red rub is mine. I applied oil to hold rub and it seems to be working. Two hours later and it still pretty much looks like that. I wasn't liking the amount of heat I was reading when I snuck a thermometer under the lid, so we moved them down to bottom rack instead of top rack. Temp down there is reading 267, compared to barely 205 up top. Also blocked up some gaps. Should go better now, but I'm sure I wasted two hours.

They both look good. What's your opinion? . Smoke ring (from the pic) looks ok. It's how everything taste when you're at the table that counts.

140??

145, That's a basic temp for regular pork. Once you go to pulled / shredded pork. The temp jumps to 185-200~
http://www.smoking-meat.com/pulled-pork-recipe

I need to get out of the cooking to the suggested (for some food) temp when it comes to smoking. Like you i keep removing the pork off at 145-150. Never remembering to let it go Longer. It's one of the reasons i strike out when it comes to a good smoked brisket. Letting a cut of beef go to 195-200 is sacrilegious.

Us too.

Had a late breakfast, just a little bacon, cheese eggs, and diced taters.

Wife had to run out for something last minute this morning and KS had precooked wings on blowout sale. We had a couple different kinds for the game. Ate them around 5PM. Their spicy wings were the best. Not a huge fan of buffalo sauced wings, but they were OK with some ranch. The plain needed help of course, some sweet baby rays. Mmmm.

Might snack a little more in a few minutes. Nothing heavy out for dinner tonight.

took 85 down through the ghetto and back. It was ok till some "other than male" driver decided to hang a u turn in front of us. Nothing happened other than the spouse unable to disconnect her seat belt fast enough, for a quick driving lesson on the other driver.

I was wondering what's going on with KS63s package. Thank you for reminding me to order my hub cap though.
If my wife every decides to come home, I'd like to take the dog for a short run as well. It's time to get back into shape. I've decided that in addition to getting back into the shape I was in last year when working out regularly, it's important that I lose any unnecessary weight. I had a shingle tear out from underneath me on Monday. It's not a good feeling at all and weighing less may help prevent that in the future.

I am working on getting drunk, and trying to order either a LPK or BGC and charging handle. I tried to contact CMMG but it's not working.

Use PSA. They are cheaper.

My packages are consistently being delayed a day on delivery. I used to be able to rely on them. Going UPS from now on.
