I took this photo because I thought it was funny. Then I decided to look it up, and I guess this is a normal practice for Masonic Lodges. I'll post the picture anyway.

If not for the Mason's, Kipling would never wrote the book. In the future preventing Connery & Caine from starring in the movie.

On the ground.

Ding, ding.

I stick to places where I don't bother drivers.

I acknowledge a couple things about cycling:

1) I haven't paid into the roadway, so I can't be a turd that demands that the flow of vehicular traffic bends to my will.

2) I stay out of the flow of traffic as best I can. Sometimes it's unavoidable that my use of the road impacts the vehicular traffic. Just don't hit me and I don't care.

3) If I notice a driver serving to purposely impact a cyclist, I will lose my shit and track them down.

4) overall: Don't be a dick. That goes for both cyclists and motorists.

Awesome.

I don't know the term, so the answer is likely "no."
EDIT: Looked up the term, and no. :(

I don't ride a lot, and usually not even for fun. I picked up a bike to run errands close to my house. Have you ever ridden to the auto parts store and back with a car battery in a back pack? I really need to get some kind of seat rack.

I've ridden with my full military ruck on. It's slightly more cumbersome than a car battery. Good experience that I don't want to do again, that's for sure. People carry everything here on their bikes. it generally doesn't matter what it is, it can fit on a bike.

I have to imagine that a ruck is more comfortable, even if more heavy, than a 30lb square right in the small of your back. I was worried it would tear the material and just blast apart in the middle of the street when crossing the intersection.

I was invited along for a bike ride organized by one of the local pro shops here. They specialize in high end equipment, the kinds that you find on the pro tour. They are the ones that found my team frame for me.

Lo and Behold: it turns out they invited some pretty serious folks, including a couple pros. They tried to take me up this 'insane' climb. I don't know the local name for it, but they called it 'Our Version of Stelvio' (a famous mountain pass in Italy). It was a massacre. I made it up first, with the next guy (a pro) appearing a full 7 minutes after I did. After the climb (and the ridiculous descent), we got into this fairly flat area where one of the pros just screamed by me. He must have been going ~30mph, while I was holding steady at ~22mph. I had already figured this guy out, and he was about to run out of gas, so I juts upped my pace a little and within a couple minutes I caught him. Then I got in front of him.

(one of the hardest things you can do is to sprint from the front. the riders behind you get the draft and they can sling-shot past you pretty easily. Essentially, you have to put up some pretty good acceleration numbers in order to actually drop someone from the front)

And I made it very obvious that I was going to start a sprint. Then I sprinted. Hard. Full-gas effort. Punk couldn't keep up.

Pro. yeah right.

After remembering the whole violin competition story, this story makes a lot more sense. When I say makes sense, I don't mean there is an issue with the story telling layout or believability, rather why your natural response to a group ride was to mercilessly destroy everyone.

How much media loss is usually considered cause for concern?

Following the last worst hailstorm we've had here, I probably bagged a 1/2 gallon or so size container full of grit from just the back side roof off the 1/3 width patio and full gutter. Have those heavy Owens Corning architectural (30 yr?) shingles put on around 2002 I think. Ridge cap is the molded/folded caps whatever they're called.

I should probably have it inspected some day?

Irving

Global media loss on it's own is not considered to be hail damage. Essentially the roof is a wear item, I liken it to a brake rotor, and media loss is a normal aspect of wearing. Localized media loss, specifically from a hail impact, as opposed to a blister, is considered damage. Now to your actual question, the roof can lose 100% of the granules and still maintain its integrity, for a time. When you've lost enough granules that you can see large areas of uncovered asphalt, it's time to start planning on a new roof. To clarify my usage of "large," you should be able to clearly identify areas from a standing position, or be able to determine a measurable percentage of shingle that is completely void of granules. That is to say, if you have to crawl around to find areas of the bare asphalt layer, its not yet a big deal. The age of the roof will play a role in your analysis to determine if there is a defect present in the shingle. This is of course my personal opinion based on my experience.

It's a good idea to occasionally check the condition of your roof, but that does NOT mean turning in a claim. Turning in claims can have a negative effect on policy rates, so claims should not be used as a "check-up." A contractor will usually look at your roof for free, but since they maker their money by selling roofs, it is possible that you'll be provided with exaggerated claims as to the status of your roof.

I could look at it sometime if you need.

Thanks for the lengthy response.

I usually ask my son to just give it a general once over when he's hanging lights, cause I get some "free" labor out of him for reasons I won't go into, and that means I don't have to climb up there, or clean out the gutters. That also means I'm depending on his judgement of "looks good."

I went hog wild and bought a new Ubiquiti AP Pro, Motorola MB7420 (16x4), and a Ubiquiti USG firewall. I'm of the camp of preferring standalone devices and tend to lean to those that are more enterprise oriented. The Ubiquiti gear needs their controller software installed on a host to setup and configure, and that alone might turn most off.

Most folks will be well served by either an all-in one cable modem/wifi router, or at most a cable modem and standalone wifi/router.

I moved my LL off comcast to Ooma, and upgrade to 200Mbps (internet only) service for $79 for the first year.

There was another thread here and several others posted some nice combo gear they were using.

I said, out loud, "Well ain't that a bitch?!" It was actually pretty funny. Not sure why they don't have stop lights on trailers all the time, it'd eliminate flaggers altogether.

Eliminate the flaggers and there's be chaos when it came to a 1 lane construction area. People don't stop for red lights, or stop signs now. You'd trust them to obey a red light .

Irving
05-02-2017, 08:12
Of course you're right. This only worked because it was in the country with far less traffic. There was a corresponding trailer on the other side of the one lane area, and the lights would just switch back and forth to let traffic through.

SideShow Bob
05-02-2017, 15:41
Irving,
When you see the price tag on those temporary trailer mounted traffic signals, you will know why const. companies call "Ready Temps" for flaggers.

CDOT has a couple, but they are mostly used for temporary on ramp metering.

Those are insane speeds!

I had a boss at INSURANCE COMPANY that was a big biker. He was telling me a story about that race across the US. During the portion that goes over the Rockies, some regular guy had a heart attack at the top of whatever mountain. The actual racers were approaching. The ambulance picked this guy up, then had a hard time staying ahead of the racers. The ambulance would pull ahead on the straight parts of the descent, but any time there were curves, the bikes would catch up and be right on the ambulance's tail.

I hope that story makes sense, seeing as I have little to no actual details.

Yep, makes sense. Too bad about the heart attack victim, but I understand the agro-riding of competitive racers.

To make it worse, I have an FTP of over 400W and a max 10 sec of almost 1300W. my W/kg number is around 5.4 these days. If I maintained the power and lost another 5 pounds, things would be pretty insane.

The point being.........making a super Big Mac in 2017 doesn't make up for the fact that you've screwed us over on Big Macs for like 20 years, and been increasing the price the whole time you keep humping us. Irving
05-25-2017, 00:08
Well, the main purpose of rocks, is the same as granules, and that is just to protect the asphalt layer beneath. I was seeing if anyone would pick up on the size difference. The perimeter rocks are about softball sized. That is so the wind won't pick them up and throw them off the building. The large rocks are placed where the wind coming over that parapet wall will create the lowest pressure. The wind blows hard enough and it will throw those smaller rocks right off the roof. Sky scrapers have damn near boulders on the roof, otherwise you can imagine the destruction of rocks being blown off the roofs of sky scrapers. They are tall enough that they experience different winds than everything else around would.

cracked exhaust manf, turbo exhaust housing.

Trans 2-1-2-1 low speed/throttle shuttle shift issue that I'm hoping replacing a few easy access trans parts will cure.

It mostly only tows heavy or runs fast and hard on the big road and I had a tuner box on it for 12 years.

last year I picked up a 2006 Mega with the 5.9 manual transmission. It was an older mans truck who bought it to tow a camper. He had all service records and such, and it have 53,000 miles on the clock. I am leaving it almost stock, keeping it for long term reliability. It has a CAI, 2nd Gen intake manifold, Edge mileage max tuner. I plan on gutting the cat or replacing the muffler for a little more noise out the back, and I would like to take out the 4.10 rear and put in 3.73's.... I don't need the full blown towing gears.

Keep an eye on that factory exhaust manifold. Just saying... Seems to be a fairly common thing if it runs even a little over factory temps. They move around, warp and crack, break off the bolts.

I got a BD 2-piece and had someone else do it (referal from here) after breaking one bolt off. One was already sheared, both at #1. He broke one at #6, but got them all out with lots of PB and heat.

I'm not a millionaire...........f*ck.

Upside is back is more gooder, there's hope among the hopeless apparently. I hope I'm not wrong about hoping, but then again, I hoped that I would be a millionaire too. Hope is a funny thing, it's kinda like "lucky guess"....only one word instead of two. Hope also falls into the "wish" category, but wishing is kinda gay for the normal reasons. You know, sh*t in one hand, wish in the other and see which one fills up first. However, there are no other words that "spring eternal", so traditionally Hope is the go to for optimism, or optimistic outlook. At this point I wonder if anyone is really still reading this, but I will continue nonetheless....mostly because I'm bored, and currently have nothing better to do. Then, there was this one time in band camp, that stinky William put a dead mouse in Bob's tuba, gosh that was so funny. E flat was never so hilarious as that day. I always thought he was a racist, but I know his family wasn't and they are good people....yeah they had a giant cross in the front yard, but his mom would hang flower baskets from it during the week and they looked lovely. I mowed their yard for them as a youngster, and they paid me in the form of peanut butter and a pair of shoes from K mart. Alright OBC, I'm going to get you one of those little spinning widget things that the kids with ADHD play with.

I think he played with something else too much and broke it, otherwise he'd have been surfing porn or entertaining instead of posting here.

I'm man enough to admit it.....yes, I still play with it. It's not broken though....but I ain't 19 anymore either, lol.

It'd be fun to have tits for a day or so I think, just sayin.

My "title" might change after posting that, but oh well.

HB, good to see ya. Sorry to hear that you have family medical stuff going on, I hope that everyone will be okay and stuff works out well in the long haul. I'm throwing positive vibes your way if that helps.

That might not be wise. There are several establishments there I'm not allowed into.

If you felt like an extra and not something more, then that's your fault.

FIFY, as I understand that's the Liberal stronghold of ID.

Prescott OTOH sounds about as conservative as you can get. My kinda place.

Prescott is looking real good to this hombre. Jobs suck as far as I can see so far, but long term thinking, I think it's a good choice.

Roll in and own the property, no mortgage. Get a medial job to pay for groceries and gas and that kinda crap....and get ready for this shit hole of a society to implode. Folks here not withstanding. Hell, you'll be the first ones on the invite list for the inaugural BBQ, and inflatable doll river float contest. Still working out the details on that, but it'll be fun for sure.

Brother, when I'm free from this second job, I'm dumping my crap into storage and to charities for the stuff I don't need, or need to be storing or moving. I really just don't have any significant blocks of time to get things rolling right now. Can't put the sign in the yard until I'm ready to.

Good acreage available, some with wells on them already.

Heading to Vegas for our anniversary in the AM, or as my dad used to call it, "The grim reminder" LOL.

Funny, I don't gamble at all (being in the industry and all). The pool is calling.......

Got a tiny electric RC glider and did not crash this weekend. Second time out with this thing and I did fairly good condidering the windy conditions. Not something I want to turn into a full time hobby, but it is fun.
Training on this so I can fly the 2m glider, built with my father as a father son project. Hope not to crash that thing, as I got the balsa kit about 30 years ago.

Heya, Ridge.....hope you had a blast.

Happy Anny, GG..........hope you have a great time with that relaxation.

Erni, I bought a RC heli some years back....lower end "starter" level. Bought a good program system that was designed for learning the joystick and apparent flight probabilities for helis....got real good at the sim. Could fly inverted in a circle around me (operator)........ crashed the fuck out of that heli several times and said to myself,............I'm not ready.

I would love to have a high end RC heli, but theres another time in my life that will happen. Glad you're having fun with it !
