Hummer
04-10-2020, 19:06
This morning [Monday] I put up a hummingbird feeder at our Palisade farm. At 2:15 p.m., we had our first visit by an adult female Broad-tailed Hummingbird.

On Friday, a friend heard a hummingbird flyover in Louisville so I put a feeder up at the cabin. We had to bring it in at night because of the freezing temps but a hummer could arrive any time now. There have been a handful of reports around the state now.

This morning, our first of year male Black-chinned Hummingbird came to the kitchen feeder.

Easter egg shoot at the range this afternoon. 3 targets @ 100 yds per shooter, 1 of them with tannerite. 50/50 pot, i walked away with, not bad considering i was the only one shooting off hand. Then it was a fun shoot with steel @ 100 , 20 rds per shooter.

Clearly stating the obvious here but... I really freakin miss shooting competitions. While the belief of satan being cast out of heaven.

Rumor has it ...
The brothers were admiring the view of earth one day. God in his practical joke ways, decided to give his brother a push. OOPS.

When they meet on their usual decade get together, satan tells his brother.

You know i can't believe after all these eons, the truth never came to light. God ask what truth? To which satan says, that you pushed me, not cast me out. God says Me? While laughing admits. You got me, i pushed you as a joke.

I was in the process of planning a trip to Indiana for Indiana Midget week (the cars, not little people). 5 tracks in 5 nights following 3 days of visiting a friend in Kentucky and partaking in the Bourbon Trail. It was early June so there is still a chance but I'm not entirely optimistic.

On the bright side, FloRacing has been streaming a lot of older USAC racing 24/7 and it's brought back a lot of memories. I have come to the conclusion I really miss Saturday night thunder.

Ive decided I want a Red Velvet cake for my birthday as there's not going to be any other festivities. Have squirreled away everything necessary except heavy cream. Have tried 3 different stores for over a week with no joy. Phooie

You're going to frost in with cream cheese frosting and not ruin it with buttercream or something else right?

My wife brought home a pumpkin loaf last fall that was blasphemous and made without the proper frosting.

That's like putting raisins in carrot cake, WTF is wrong with people?

I didn't think $39.00 was too steep, but after getting and using it I don't regret spending the money on it.

Listening to the president's press briefing it seemed like a good time for a glass of wine. So, I opened a Tempranillo that I'd made from Palisade grapes in 2011. It's been stored on it's side in a cooler for 8 years after bottling. It's mature with no sign of over oxidation, thankfully.

I make reds in a rich fruit forward style which isn't typical for Tempranillo, and this one was fermented with a light French oak. Very nice, not complex but both tannic and smooth with a slight chalky character. I'm pleased but wish this wasn't one of the last remaining reds from my home winery. I look forward to making wine in Palisade again in a couple years.

Why a couple of years?

The equipment takes space, much of a 3-4 car garage. Grape crusher/destemmer, 80 litre hydro press, multiple fermenters for several hundred gallons of wine, pumps, filters, vacuum bottler and corkers, and more. Making the wine takes weeks of attention and there's no room for all that in a little mountain cabin. In 2 or 3 years the cabin will be a getaway place again.

Thanks, Brutal. Ha! The wine drinking is the celebration after a day of irrigating, working on sharpening saw chains, pruning trees and cutting some once wonderful pinyon pines in the wildlife shelter belt by the house. They've succumbed to a stress combo of drought and pinyon beetles. I have a few more days of chain saw work and hauling branches to burn--and evenings of wine tasting.

Oh I have, GF really appreciates the factoids about bark scorpions that I've learned. Nests can harbor 20/30 and females and can brood 10/20 young three to four times a year in favorable conditions. ASU states insecticides are useless against them, and recommends a cedar oil spray around entry points...but they only need 1/16 of an inch gap to enter.

I only found two in the house last summer, and that's two too many for me.

Hey, this looks like fun: A technical glitch saved a French fighter jet after a civilian passenger freaked out and ejected (https://taskandpurpose.com/military-tech/french-fighter-jet-ejection-technical-flaw)

It might be hard to believe, but the accidental-self-ejection of a 64-year-old civilian from a French fighter jet during takeoff could have been worse.

According to aviation news outlet Aerotime, the recently-released final investigation report by the French investigation bureau for state aviation safety (BEA-E) into the March 2019 incident details exactly what caused a French defense manufacturer to accidentally shoot himself out of a Dassault Rafale B fighter jet.

According to the report, the civilian was surprised with the flight by four of his colleagues as a gift — a gift he didn't particularly want but felt that he couldn't refuse — and because of the "informal" nature of the flight, he didn't go through the typical medical procedures, which include "a medical visit to the Center for medical expertise of flight personnel (CEMPN), and the approval of the Ministry."

Instead, the civilian was checked out by a doctor a few hours before the flight and cleared, "under the condition that he would not be submitted to a negative load factor."

Only thing is, no one told that to the pilot. As a result, the man was "subjected...to a negative load factor of about -0.6G" when the jet was leveling off during takeoff, stressing him the hell out so much that, compounded with the "social pressure of his colleagues," he pulled the ejector handle and jettisoned himself from the aircraft.

This is what I woke up to at my place.

Figures. Going into the office today and there has to be five inches or more of snow here when I woke up.

Yeah, the commute this morning was rough. I almost sprained my ankle on a dog toy shuffling from the bedroom to the kitchen.

Seems like a good day to go to the store. I'm running out of bagels.

Has anyone else been having trouble keeping track of what day of the week it is lately?

My whole life schedule is all off kilter.

Tuesday evening I thought it was Wednesday. Last Friday I almost thought it was Thursday. Sunday felt kind of like a Saturday.

I almost have to check my phone to make sure I know what day of the week I?m on.

Yep. I haven't worked since the end of May, so every day is a Saturday. It's hard for me to keep track since I'm not engaged in daily work (other than honey-dos and stuff I want to do around the house). I also have to check the date regularly.

I drove over to Sam's this morning and it was practically drizzling when I left. I came out of the store into a blizzard. I wasn't expecting that.

I've been working from home for about five years now, and most recently I make my own schedule. I never know what day it is. I talk to people and ask how they are and they reply something like, "okay, for a Monday," and I'm often like, "Oh, is it?"

I also stumble when I get a hair cut in the middle of day and people ask if I'm on break or have the day off.

Over 12 years of crap I had to take from Eastlake 80614 post office staff, today was the day that straw broke camels back.
I got so unhappy that I called people higher up. I told em what the hell happened just this week and minor details of what major crap happed there in past 12 years.

After 20 minutes later, postmaster (head of 80614) called. I was kinda shocked the postmaster would call that early.

Talked to the branch boss and lash the crap that I had to deal with for past 12 years. I also told em that I go there often.

This is very fking reason I drive all the way to northglenn (80233) or Broomfield (80020) to drop off of packages.
I even told her that they ever read google or Yelp reviews.
It is repetitive same complaints.

Due to stay home crap, I try to reduce unnecessary driving, but I will be avoiding this eastlake post office, unless it is absolutely necessary.

I got an email the other day with an appointment reminder for my eye exam. In Quincy, IL.

LOL. I start working on an email to the provider and then see the "unsubscribe" link in the email.

Takes me right there with no validation. I changed the email address to the provider (haha on that loop) and then see the actual recipient's HOME ADDRESS for postcard contact. Doh!

Finished the email and informed them they need to report that HIPAA violation and asked if I should send a postcard to "address redacted" to let them know of their upcoming appointment.

Uh-oh. They have your address now, you know. What's the complaint? Did they make you stand in line while they dilly-dally? That's official post office protocol for big city post offices.

Thankfully, small rural post offices are much more customer friendly.

I?ve struggled to get anything accomplished at those types of post offices. Seems they keep odd hours compared to the ones in the big cities. They do weird things like closing during lunch hours or shutting down at four pm.

Thankfully I?ve figured out I can do a lot of stuff at the little kiosk in my local post office 24/7 and don?t need to actually deal with a postal worker.

I remember showing up at the post office with the company mail meter to get more postage. You could see the contest begin as to who could work the slowest behind the counter. Nobody wanted to deal with it. [Faint]

I'm bad at being that customer, but I generally check the line behind me and make an effort to not be that guy.
My personal favorite though, is the guy or gal that bitches, out loud, the entire time they are in the line. "Can't this guy hurry up?" "What's taking so long?" "That lady isn't even doing anything!" Then as soon as it's their turn, they launch into a personal story that has nothing to do with the transaction they are there for. Are you freaking kidding me?

Other post offices in Northglenn and Broomfield are in first name basis and so friendly relative these Eastlake 80614 ass clowns.

1. The stupid Eastlake treats me like a lying criminal whenever I use "media mail" thinking I am ripping them off with shipping something else than dvd/textbooks. I am so tired of those fuktards treating me like a criminals.
"oh, what is in there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"We can only accept books if you are using media mail!!!!"

2.They also denied more than 10 times before my address had different zip than Eastlake , and they said I need to ship it to my post office with same zip. My zip does not have a postoffice with same zip code, and the post office that deals with our mail (who has different zip than us) is about 18+miniutes away.
However, Eastlake stop doing stupid shit (Denying packages due to different zip on sender's address) about 2 yeas ago. (2008-2017ish).
Every damn time this shit happened, I had to drive all the way to Northglenn or Broomfield post office to drop my package off.

3. I checked my package every time with usps certified scale, and it was 15.9oz. When I went to eastlake , they said it was 16.1oz and denied the package. They treated all customer like that as a criminal and they even measure DIM like we are here to scam them.
So, that same day, I went to Northglenn office and they did the measuring, and it was 15.9oz.
I had to drive all the way to northglenn and wasted my time to ship a 1st class package.

4.These asstards always try NOT TO SCAN the barcode. I don't know what their intention is, but online seller (ebay.etsy, fbm, etc) needs the barcode scanned for usps acceptance within certain period of day.
Big post office gets so happy whenever I bring 25-50 packages that they are getting credited for accepting massive amount of packages. Eastlake sleezy-lazy fuktards gets angry.

ETA: Check google and yelp review on eastlake 80614 post office. The complaints are usually same/similar and very repetitive. I mentioned that to the person in charge of many offices and the postmaster. I doubt this will change, because they probably inhale too much radon (Rn) gas.

As wyo said, there are so many occurrence that I gave up on restaurant pickup order and went to fastfood.
There are mom/pop restaurant who nickel&dime you with smaller portion than pre-covid19 takeout. That is just worse than price gouging hand sanitize or toilet paper. at least I know I get gouged on those items. Those restaurant gougers try to sneak in 50cents to dollar more AND give less portion without noticing it later.

Those restaurants will be my avoid list.

SMH. Some folks are trying hard to survive and you bitch about a small price increase or smaller portion? FFS.

Despite a significant drop in business, Tailgate Tavern gave free gas to healthcare workers this morning. I think they did it last week too. How's that for gouging people?

I've pretty much lived on carry out since this thing started (being in a hotel), and my waist line will prove it. Every place I've ordered from has been beyond grateful, and most have completely restructured their business model, yet still provided good service and food. I cannot complain about portions, and I've tipped very well despite not being "served". I'm very grateful for what the restaurant business has done during this time.

Many of these places aren't even able to pay rent, if you are bitching over 50 cents, then nothing I say is likely to persuade you, but these business didn't ask to basically be shut down, that 50 cents extra is likely covering all the extra clam shells or whatever they are putting your food in.

You didn't say that. You said "Those restaurant gougers try to sneak in 50cents to dollar more AND give less portion without noticing it later."

You're not getting ripped off. They're providing a service under extra ordinary circumstances and you think they're taking advantage of you. In a free market society, of which you often profess to be in favor of, there's no such thing as price gouging. It's what the market will bear.

Maybe they changed their pricing and you're looking at an old menu? Maybe there's a different cook that portions differently. Maybe there was a misunderstanding or a language barrier? Lot of what-if's there. For you to make an assumption they're gouging you is petty.

I didn't do any name calling in my first post. Now I will. Your attitude and what you're saying is a total dick move. There. Now go tattle to a mod.
